The old adage "A picture speaks a thousand words" holds true for Berks County. It is truly a cross between the old and the new. It is hard to believe that people once walked from the back woods and now winding roads of Hereford Township to the metropolis of Reading to do their banking, file their wills, seek probate and register their property--often in a single day. However, a drive through that part of the world will demonstrate profoundly how some areas of the county have been very progressive from the early 18th century while others are still caught in the timewarp of the past.
In this section of the site, I hope to bring together a collection of photographs and pictures which will demonstrate that contrast. Please send me copies of any pictures you might have which will show those who cannot visit Berks County in person just what our ancestors found when they got here, what they created, and what their world has become.
The following pictures are from Reading and Berks County Pennsylvania: Mirror to the Past (Collector's Edition), Wyomissing: Wyomissing New Home Federal Savings, n.p.
If you have an interesting photo or picture that you would like to contribute, please contact Nancy.
