SHILLINGTON, PA. -- From a hilltop, a view of the Berks County Almshouse. The 417 acres originally purchased for the institution cost the county $16,690 and in 1878 the almshouse accommodated 613 guests. It was hailed as the finest institution of its kind in the state.
