Westwood, Merrill Stanley

An early Christmas morning collision between a freight train and a light delivery truck at a crossing of the P. and R. railway at Mertztown resulted in the death of the driver of the truck and slight injury to his companion. Merrill Stanley Westwood of Topton, a 24-year-old huckster, was crushed to death in the cab of his light truck while his companion, Bud Haker, 21, of Kutztown, suffered only brush burns and bruises which are being treated in the Allentown hospital. The two were alone in the truck when the accident happened at 1:30 oclock yesterday morning at the Mertztown crossing at a time when the roads were covered with ice caused by the rain of the evening which had frozen. There is a slight incline where the road leads onto the crossing and State Motor Policeman R. A. Balas of the Reading barracks, who investigated the accident, reported that it was possible that the truck skidded onto the tracks when Westwood applied the brakes. Levi Miller of Emaus who came upon the scene a short time after the accident rushed Haker to the Allentown hospital for treatment. It was seen that Westwood was beyond medical aid and Dr. Warren Trexler of Topton, deputy coroner of Berks county, was called. Examination revealed the young man had suffered a fractured skull. The doctor issued a certificate of accidental death and turned the body over to Funeral Director Irwin DeLong of Topton to prepare it for burial. Westwood was the only child of Henry S. and Ida C. Opdyke Westwood of 27 Callowhill St., Topton, and for some time had been engaged in selling produce on a huckster route he had established. Besides his parents, he is survived by his maternal great-great-grandfather and his paternal great-great-grandmother. The funeral services will be held at the home of his parents Wednesday afternoon at 2 oclock, Rev. F. D. Slifer, pastor of the Maxatawny Reformed charge, officiating. Wiltrout, Lawson Jonathan

Repeated threats of suicide, made by Lawson Jonathan Wiltrout, 51, of Topton, over a period of several years, became a reality early yesterday morning when he ended his life on High street, that borough, about two blocks from his home. Several hours later a resident of the borough, on his way to work, stumbled across the body from which the top of the head had been blown by the discharge of a shotgun. For some time past, Wiltrout, during fits of despondency, threatened to destroy himself but when he failed to make the first few threats good his family took them lightly. Of late months he realized that his threats were not taken seriously anymore by members of the family and he adopted the idea of taking the gun with him and shooting it off in the yard of his home. On the first occasion of the shooting, the family rushed out, badly frightened, only to meet Wiltrout returning to the house. After several of these attempts to frighten the family, his wife refused to take him seriously. Early yesterday morning he made the same threat and, taking his shotgun, left the house. His wife thought nothing of it and, expecting him to return home shortly, retired. A short time later, about three o'clock, she heard the shot and although she was somewhat alarmed, thought it was just another bluff. It was not until about daybreak that Wiltrout was found lying in the street with the top of his head shot off. Wiltrout was born in Rockland township, Berks county, a son of the late Stanley L. and Sarah Scheirer Wiltrout. Many years ago he removed to Topton and secured employment in the plant of the DeLong Furniture company in whose employ he remained until the time of his death. He was a member of the P.O.S. of A. and Knights of the Golden Eagle, of Topton. Upon discovery of his death yesterday morning, Deputy Coroner Dr. C. F. Smith, of Topton, was notified. After issuing a certificate of death, the deputy coroner gave permission to Undertaker Irvin DeLong, of Topton, to remove the body and prepare it for burial. Mr. Wiltrout is survived by his widow, Jennie, nee Fenstermacher; three children, Arline, at home; Rellie, of Lyons, and Mrs. Victor Snyder, of Topton; one grandchild, a sister, Mrs. William Christman, of Fleetwood R. D., and a step-sister, Mrs. Llewellyn Berg, of Kutztown. Private funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1.30 o'clock at his late home, High and Cherry streets, Topton. Interment will be made in the Longswamp church cemetery. Friends may call Thursday night from 7 to 9 o'clock.

Wink, Mrs. Jacob

A most extraordinary case terminated in death at Kutztown yesterday morning, when Mrs. Jacob Wink died after an illness of nearly four years aged 50. Two years ago, she had a cancer removed from her breast, after which operation the disease made its appearance in the abdomen, from which she was suffering until death relieved her of the suffering. Besides the growth in the abdomen, she was afflicted with asteosaroma, which so destroyed the animal matter in the bones that they were as brittle as if burnt in an oven.

At the time of her death, both her lower limbs were fractured, the bones having snapped off like pipe stems, whilst some time ago both arms were in the same condition. The bones so brittle that the slightest motion of the body caused them to break. Such cases are very rare in surgical or medical history and there were many visitors to her bedside, and the case will likely be fully reported to the leading medical journals.

Killed by a Grain of Wheat. Fell into a Pennsylvania Farmer's Shoe and Caused Blood Poisoning.

Reading, Penn., July 20. A little grain of wheat caused the death of Henry B. Wismer of Schwenksville, Berks County. Several weeks ago a grain of wheat fell into his shoe. Upon taking his shoe off in the evening he found it had made a sore, but as it annoyed him but little, he went to Philadelphia the next morning on business. There he became very ill, and he was brought home and placed in charge of Dr. C.W. Everhart, who pronounced his illness blood poisoning.

Wismer's condition became worse, and it was decided the only thing that might save his life was the amputation of the leg. He was taken to the Jefferson Hospital, in Philadelphia, where the operation was performed, but he died yesterday.

Wittman, Robert Sr.

Charges of murder and manslaughter were filed against 15-year-old Marshall Wittman yesterday afternoon, a few hours after his father, Robert Wittman, Sr., 59, died at the Allentown hospital from a bullet wound in his abdomen. The boy, who police say shot his father in front of their home at Hancock late Monday night after an all-day argument, received new of this father's death at 10:30 yesterday morning without comment or outward show of emotion. He was told of the death as he was signing a statement in the office of the Berks county district attorney. “The boy hadn't a word to say,” C. Wilson Austin, assistant district attorney said. “Not a muscle of his face moved. He just reached for a pen, signed the statement he made to us, and that was that.” The warrant formally charging him with murder and manslaughter was sworn out before alderman Harry Wolf in Reading by Berks county Detective Joseph Cafoncelli at 1:30 yesterday afternoon. It was served on him in the alderman's office and he was returned to the Berks county prison where he was held since Tuesday. The case will be tried in Reading at the September term of Quarter Sessions court. The shooting shortly before 11 o'clock Monday night was at the Wittman home at Hancock, near Topton, Berks county. However, because the victim died in the Allentown hospital, it was not immediately certain whether the inquest would be held in Lehigh or Berks county. Coroner George J. Stark of Berks county said he would take that matter up with the berks county district attorney this morning. Coroner Alexander M. Peters of Lehigh county was out of town and could not be reached for a statement last night. Assistant District Attorney Austin said that the father, in a death bed statement, denied that he had a club in his hand before the shooting. Marshall had told police that the older man had a club and had threatened to strike him. The boy's mother also was quoted by Detective Cafoncelli as saying that she saw her husband carrying an iron bar sometime before the shooting. Austin said he asked the father whether he had an argument with his son and was told: “I didn't want him on the premises.” Dr. Pauline Wenner performed an autopsy at the Allentown hospital yesterday and recovered a bullet from Wittman's body. The bullet entered the abdomen and injured vital organs. Late yesterday afternoon the body was removed by Undertaker DeLong of Topton. Wittman is survived by his wife Beulah, nee Gambler, Wittman and eleven children: Marshall, who is accused of fatally wounding his father; Myrtle, Mary, Lorraine, Carrie, Kenneth and Wayne, at home; Mrs. Ernest Welder, Wescosville; Mrs. Fred Acker, Allentown; William, in the U.S. Navy and stationed at Washington, D.C., and Robert Jr., Mertztown R.D. Five grandchildren also survive. Private funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the DeLong funeral home, 107 S. Home St., Topton. Interment will be in the Mertztown church cemetery.
