Seidel, Susanna

"Mommy" Seidel, Berks Oldest Resident, Dies.
Fails to Survive Shock of Fall and Succumbs in Her Home.
Was 101 Years Old.
Simple Philosophy Endeared Her to Hundreds of Friends.

"Mommy" Seidel, oldest woman in Berks county, is dead. Mrs. Susanna Seidel, who celebrated her 101st birthday last February 1 in her home in Maidencreek Township, died at 8:55 o'clock last night. A leg injury which she received three weeks ago in a fall is believed to have caused a shock which hastened her death.

She was the widow of Franklin G. Seidel a former county commissioner, whom she married 79 years ago.

It was amid an atmosphere of bygone days, in which she had lived, that Mrs. Seidel died. "Mommy Seidel," as she was called by the hundreds who knew her, and were fond of her, was born in a little stone house in Maidencreek. She never traveled very far from her birthplace, nothing extraordinary ever happened to her in the course of her life --- and yet her simple homely philosophy was refreshing in such times as when she celebrated her century of living with a quiet celebration in 1934 in a little home near Blandon.

Read by Candle

"I've lived through three wars" she said then. "I've read by the light of a candle, I made myself, and now I read by electricity. I marveled at the squeaks that come from the first music box they called a radio. I've had many years to think about, many things, and there's only one thing I'd tell you: Life is what you make it."

Most modern innovations interested Mrs. Seidel, although she looked with scorn on some. Women holding places in the business world did not conform to her way of thinking any more than powder, lipstick, and rouge, of which she used to say: "I got a man without them. A good man who stuck to me, even though I never knew how to work a typewriter or write shorthand."

Automobiles had her mark of approval, and she often enjoyed motoring in fine weather. But airplanes, submarines, ships, that cross the ocean in a week-end---she would have nothing to do with them.

"The world moves fast enough as it is," was her observation, repeated often. "You can't keep up with it without running."

Fond of Rocker

Until her fall, Mrs. Seidel went about the house unaided, and attended to minor household duties. But much of her time was spent in her rocker, thinking of other days.

"I've been happy, and I've had my troubles," she used to muse, "but there's not much to do about either now. I like to think back, just sit here on the rocker. And if I am sad, then I read my prayer book. It comforts me."

Her prize possessions were a mauve and gray-striped taffeta wedding dress she wore 79 years ago, and the purple mantle that she wore on her shoulders these past years. Then, too, she had a clock that has ticked for more then 150 years, given as a wedding present to her grandfather. Evan the rocker she whiled away her time in was old, older than "Mommy" Seidel herself.

She was the last member of her immediate family. She was the daughter of George and Hannah (Sell) Weidenhammer and the sister of Mrs. George D. Stitzel, wife of an associate judge of Berks.

Besides her daughter, Mrs. Dunkle, with whom she lived, Seidel is survived by two grandchildren, Sarah, wife of Lloyd Weidenhammer, postmaster in Maidencreek, and Franklin Dunkle.

F. F. Seidel, Inc., funeral directors, will be in charge of the arrangements.
