(nee Bear) Sousley, 526 Franklin street, at the age of 25 years, 9 months and 14 days. She was a graduate of the local high school, class of 1911. Upon her graduation she entered McCanns Business College in Reading from which she graduated with honors. She then entered the employ of the Windsor Broom Co,., Front street, which started in business at that time, and was their first stenographer. She served in this capacity for some time and, in the meantime, took a civil service examination in Reading, coming out second on the list. Stenographer in Washington.
Shortly thereafter she was appointed a stenographer in the Department of the Interior in Washington and served in this capacity under Secretary Sullivan until the outbreak of the war, when the latter was commissioned a captain in the army. He was succeeded by Mr. Phillips, who appointed Mrs. Keehn his assistant, in which capacity she had to approve all work of the department and present it to her chief. She had the distinction of being the first woman having ever served in this capacity. She reached this distinction through hard application to her work, which manifested itself all through he school periods. While thus employed she made the acquaintance of her husband, who was employed as a machinist at the Washington navy yard. After her marriage she resigned her position. Her husband was then transferred to the navy yard at Norfolk, Va., where they resided until the condition of the wife became such that it was deemed advisable to remove her to the home of her parents.
She had a pleasing disposition and made friends readily. She was a member of S. Johns Lutheran Church. Rev. Walter R. Clark of the First Reformed Church will conduct services over the remains next Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the home of her parents. Interment in St. Johns Cemetery. Undertaker Walter J. Loy.

A Noted Woman Dead at 97.
There died at noon on Oct. 4, at the age of 97 years, one of the most interesting and highly esteemed of Philadelphia' noted women, Mrs. Harriet de Benneville Keim, the mistress of "Solitude," on the Old York road. She and her ancestors had occupied that beautiful estate of more than 100 acres for nearly two centuries, and there they are interred in a private burial ground. The women of her race were socially prominent in colonial days, and were accorded special privileges by the British commander who occupied their broad acres during the Revolutionary war.
Harriet de Benneville was born in March 1803. She was married in 1821 to John May Keim, of Reading, who died more than 50 years ago. Her father, Dr. George de Benneville, was a son of Dr. George de Benneville a native of Rouen, Normandy, who figures in Dr. S. Weir Mitchell's historical novel, "Hugh Wynne." It is said that Queen Anne, of England, was sponsor and guardian of the elder de Benneville's orphaned childhood. The younger de Benneville married Eleanor Roberts, the mother of Mrs. Kiem, whose death is now recorded. She was descended from Thomas Roberts, a Welsh gentleman, and personal friend of William Penn.
The house in which Mrs. Keim resided was built in 1775 by her aunt, Sarah Roberts, and was used by the British as a hospital in 1777 and 778. The estate on which it stands at Old York road and Fisher's lane, aptly named "Solitude," is rapidly being surrounded by the growing city. The city's maps show streets and avenues running through it, but they are not there. Its broad acres and century old trees have not been disturbed and there has been a general understanding that they would not be interfered with during Mrs. Keim's lifetime.
There are three houses on the estate, massive colonial structures, having walls three feet in thickness. The house occupied by Mrs. Keim's farmer was standing when her great-grandfather, Thomas Roberts, bough the property in 1715, and is believed to have then been 25 years old. The estate was occupied by Cornwallis and his staff all through the British occupation of Philadelphia, and the old house, according to the tradition of the family, was recognized place of consultation, a certain room still being called the Cornwallis room. The entire seclusion of "Solitude," no doubt led to its selection by the British general as his council place.
In this delightful, rich in traditions of the colonial period and the infancy of the republic, Mrs. Keim spent the evening of her long life, with every faculty unimpaired. She had never worn glasses, despite her advanced age, and remained young in spirit. She was fond of entertaining, and to the last dispensed the hospitality characteristic of her early life with courtly grace.
Her great age precluded any hope of recovery from the stroke of paralysis which caused her death, for which she constantly said she was ready. Her father died at Branchtown and is buried in the de Benneville private burial ground on Greenlane. There also lie her grandfather and more than 100 members of the family, including the de Benneville, Brown, Roberts, Shewell, Evans and Thomas branches, as well as the more immediate families of Keim and de Benneville.
Mrs. Keim survived all her children but one and her roof sheltered four generations of descendants.
Deceased was the grandmother of J.M.K. Wickersham, who some years ago resided in Newtown.

Death of Col. Keller. A Brave Soldier and a Citizen Prominent in Many Walks of Life - His Remarkable War Record
Col. David C. Keller, a well known hotel proprietor and Civil War veteran, died at 8:30 p.m., Thursday, at his home, 1006 Penn, from hemorrhages, resulting from a wound received at Spottsylvania Court House, VA., May 12, 1864, when he was shot through the left lung. He was in his 63rd year. This and other wounds received by Col. KELLER while in the war, often gave him considerable trouble. Under the circumstances, he was in good health. While attending the encampment at Gettysburg, last October, of the Union Veteran Legion, of which he was a member, he was seized with two hemorrhages, one on the battlefield while listening to Capt. Long's address. The attacks were so severe that he was brought home and for a time it was thought he would die.
Although he never fully recovered, Col. KELLER was in fair condition until last Tuesday, when he was attacked with another hemorrhage. Several others followed. He rapidly grew weaker and lapsed into unconsciousness, remaining in that state until he died.
Col. KELLER was well known throughout the county. He was a brave soldier in the Civil War and carried the scars of many wounds in defense of his country. He was born in Rockland, July 25, 1839, and was the son of John and Esther (CLAUSER) KELLER. During his boyhood days he worked on his father's farm and attended the school which stood on the land owned by his father.
At the age of 19 he entered the employ of Benneville GLASE as a clerk in his general store at Friedensburg, where he remained until the breaking of the Civil War, when he enlisted in Co. C. 7th Pennsylvania Reserves. He was mustered into the service April 22, 1861, for 3 months, and on Oct. 21, 1861, became first lieutenant of Co. K. 93rd Regt., and on Nov. 8, 1862, was made captain, Nov. 23, 1864, he was commissioned as major, and on Aug. 1, 1864, he was brevetted lieutenant Colonel for distinguished services in the campaign before Richmond, VA, receiving his commission from Gov. CURTIN on Dec. 18, following.
He was brevetted colonel April 2, 1865, for gallant and meritorious service in the assault before Petersburg, VA, and assigned to the 2d Brigade, 3d Division 6th Corps, Army of the Potomac, Peninsular campaign. He participated in the grand review in Washington in June 1865, and was mustered out with his command June 27, 1865.
Col. KELLER carried 9 bullet wounds all received on the battlefield. In the battle of Fair Oaks, May 31, 1862, he was twice wounded; at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863, he received another; at Spottsylvania Court House, VA, May 12, 1864, at Fort Fisher, and at Petersburg, VA, March 25, 1865, he was again wounded.
When peace was declared Col. KELLER came to Reading and engaged in various enterprises and for many years conducted hotels successfully. He started out at the Schmucker House, southwest corner of 6th and Penn, in partnership with his brother-in-law, the late Daniel A. YODER. He conducted the Berks County House for a short time, then the Franklin House and was the landlord of the Rose Valley Park Hotel [a.k.a. Central Park Hotel], previously well known as the Schweitzer House, on Mineral Spring Road [beyond Seventeenth Street] ; the Palmer House North 6th St; St. Cloud Hotel, Penn above 7th and the past 9 years the proprietor of [his saloon] the Penn Square Hotel, 527 Penn.
He was an ardent Republican. He served two terms as County Commissioner, was for 4 years a member of Common Council, and when the Reading Legislative District was established he was one of the two first candidates for the Legislature from this district. He was a popular man in his party and repeatedly served as delegate to State and County Conventions. He was the president of the Berks County Liquor League, when that organization was in the height of its prosperity. He was a prominent candidate for Auditor General at one of the Republican State Conventions. He was census enumerator for Berks in 1880.
Co. KELLER was a personal friend of Senators QUAY and CAMERON, and was for a number of years a power in local politics. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Congregation and a generous contributor to charitable and church work. He was appointed by Gov. HARTRANFT as Inspector General, with the rank of Lieutenant colonel, on the staff of Major General William J. BOLTON, 3d Division, N. G. P.
He was a member and director of several building associations, a member of Encampment No. 43, U.V.L.; a member and past commander of Gen. William H. KEIM Post, No. 76 G.A.R.; a member of Teutonia Lodge, No. 367, F. and A.M.; of Excelsior Chapter, No. 237, R.A.M. of Reading Commandery, No. 43 K.T.; of Raja Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S., and of the 93d Regimental Association.
He is survived by his widow (Rosa KREBS, daughter of the late Conrad KREBS). Of the children that were born to them, all died young except one son Daniel Franklin KELLER, who is now 1st Lieutenant of the 24th Regiment, U.S. Infantry, now in the Philippines.
His mother, Mrs. Esther KELLER, aged 93, living on the old homestead in Rockland, and these brothers and sisters survive: Daniel C., Chatham, ILL; Jacob C. Springfield, Ohio; William C., Stony Creek; Jeremiah C., Samuel C., Mrs. William YOUSE and Mrs. Caroline BRUMBACH, New Jerusalem.
Deceased was whole-souled and generous, genial and companionable. He was deservedly popular and prominent in all the organizations to which he belonged and in the community was highly esteemed.

Note: A second obituary appeared in another Reading paper on the same date carrying almost identical information except for the account of his nine wounds and the final paragraph:
Col. KELLER carried nine bullet wounds, all received on the battlefield. In the battle of Fair Oaks May 31, 1862, he was twice wounded; at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863, he received another; at Spottsylvania Court House, VA, May 12, 1864, two more, the one being a wound in the lung which finally resulted in death; at Cedar Creek, October 19, 1864, at Fort Fisher and at Petersburg, AV March 25, 1865, he was again wounded.
Colonel KELLER was a man of even temperament and possessed the faculty of making friends. He was widely known, not only in Reading, but throughout the country, and his death will be a shock to those who knew him best.
Colonel David KELLER was buried at the Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading, on May 26, 1902. His wife Rosa appears to be buried there as well with a burial date of Nov. 20, 1909.

Mrs. Hannah Kepler, of Philadelphia, widow of Jonathan Kepler, was stricken with apoplexy and died, aged 80 years. One son, Henry survives. Deceased formerly resided here but moved with her family to Philadelphia about 26 years ago. Funeral was held Thursday. The remains were brought here on the 9:30 a.m. train.
Mrs. Hannah Kepler was born at Alsace, Berks Co., PA (near Reading) July 4, 1827. She was the daughter of Gabriel and Esther (Mackey) Ganser and widow of Jonathan Kepler, first Burgess of Boyertown. She lived for many years at the old family homestead, which then stood at the corner of Reading Avenue and Third Street, opposite Buchert and Stetler's hotels, now occupied by stores and dwellings. She was the mother of six children, two sons and four daughters, only one of whom a devoted son – survives her. Mrs. Clara Hagy, whose husband James Keely Hagy was killed at the time of the accident at the Gabel's Iron Mines was her daughter. Her father was the first to manufacture coffins in Boyertown a business which is now carried on extensively at this place.
Mrs. Kepler died in the Samaritan Hospital at 12:18 p.m. Monday, July 13th, from the effects of a stroke she received while visiting her grandson, Chas. H. Hagy, in Tioga, Philadelphia. Services were held at her late residence, the home of her son Henry G. Kepler, 1010 South 47th St., West Philadelphia Wednesday evening at 9:00 p.m. and again at the chapel in Fairview cemetery, Boyertown, Thursday morning at 10 a.m. after which her body was laid to rest beside that of her husband in Fairview.
"Mother Kepler," as she was known in the neighborhood where she lived, made many and lasting friends, who in cases of extreme sickness would often seek her for advice and help. She was kind, active and self sacrificing, always considering the comforts and needs of others before her own self comforts.
Mrs. Kepler leaves a son, Henry G. Kepler, of the firm of Walker and Kepler, Electrical Engineers and contractors, 531 Chestnut Street, three grandsons, Chas., J. Lawrence, and C. Keely Hagy; one granddaughter, Marion A. Kepler and four great-grandchildren, besides a host of friends to mourn her loss.
Mrs. Kepler may be remembered by a few of the older residents of Boyertown as a member of the old Union Church before they separated into the Reformed and Lutheran Churches and where she taught a Sunday school class afterwards going over with the Lutheran Church. She was for many years until her death a member of Heidelberg Reformed Church, 19th and Oxford Streets, Philadelphia.

J.H. Keppelman Dies Suddenly at the Age of 71. Connected with Gas Co. 41 Years; President for Past 6 Years.
John H. Keppelman, president and manager of the Consumers Gas Company, and one of Reading's best known citizens, died suddenly at 9:15 o'clock Saturday evening at his residence, 144 North Fourth Street. Mr. Keppelman, who was in his 72d year, had been suffering from the effects of diabetes for the last five months. However, his illness was not considered serious as his sudden death came as a grave shock to his relatives and many friends.
Mr. Keppelman suffered a heart stroke and collapsed in his home expiring a few moments later. Dr. H.D. Stryker, under whose care he had been ever since his illness, was summoned, as was Mr. Keppelman's only son, Attorney John Arthur Keppelman, 130 Windsor Street.
The latter hastened to the home of his parent, but his father died before his arrival. Mr. Keppelman's death was a great shock to his son, as he had conversed with him but a short time before the latter suffered the fatal attack. He spoke to him Saturday morning and again in the afternoon and it at both times his father showed no sign of being seriously ill. The last time he saw his father alive was at 5:30 o'clock.
Dr. Stryker pronounced death due to heart failure brought about by deceased's condition as a result of diabetes.
Mr. Keppelman was connected with the Consumers Gas Company for 41 years, more than 30 years which he served as superintendent and the last six years as president and manager. As a member of Council under the old form of government, he was a leading figure advocating permanent municipal improvements. His deep interest and wide knowledge of municipal matters made him a valuable public official and he rendered notable service to the community.
Wife Died on Same Date Two Years Ago
Mrs. Keppelman's death occurred on the same date as that of his wife, Mary E. who died two years ago. Mrs. Keppelman was a daughter of to Col. John E. Arthur who saw h-- service with the Union forces during the Civil War.
Mr. Keppelman was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, in which congregation he served as a vestryman a number of years. He was president of the old Board of Trade for four terms. He was connected with Teutonia Lodge, No. 367, F. and A.M.; Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, Rajah Temple, Mystic Shriners, and other Masonic bodies. He was a member of Reading Lodge No. 115, B.P.O. Elks, the Chamber of Commerce and board of trustees of the Reading Public Library.
Born in Reading
Mr. Keppelman was born in this city on Feb. 16, 1853. He graduated from the Reading High School in 1870 and learned his trade as a molder in a foundry conducted by his father, the late John Joseph Conrad Keppelman.
Mr. Keppelman served as superintendent of the Consumers Gas Company from 1887, and the business developed wonderfully under his leadership. He was a leader in the movement to erect the present Berkshire Hotel at Fifth and Washington Streets.
For Public Improvements
He represented the Sixth ward in Councils for many years, serving in both branches, and it was under his leadership that the first paving loan was passed and a live campaign started for permanent municipal improvements. Mr. Keppelman's long battle for a house sewage system for Reading is remembered by those interested in municipal affairs. Mr. Keppelman was one of the men who backed the legislation creating Reading's first board of public works. This was considered a great victory at the time as councilmen were decidedly reluctant to permit the members to handle expenditures for paving, etc. He was a factor in bringing about a water filtration system in the city. He was a leading spirit in the old Board of Trade. He was active in encouraging out-of-town industrial enterprises to locate here. Mr. Keppelman was greatly interested in the work of the Reading Public Library, of which he was a trustee. He was for some years a director of the First National Bank. Mr. Keppelman was a Democrat.
Besides his son, Attorney John Arthur Keppelman, Mr. Keppelman leaves three brothers, Albert, Howard, and Theodore M. Keppelman, this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Howard Freese and Mrs. Joseph Vesey, also of this city.

Falling head-first against a pile of timber when he lost his balance while reducing a tree at his sawmill, Percy Kercher, aged 42, of Longswamp, three miles from Topton, was so seriously injured that he died in the Allentown hospital at 7.30 o'clock last night, three hours after the mishap. Kercher, together with Howard Fritsch, an employe, were engaged in sawing trees with his gasoline driven saw. One of the trees started to feed into the saw in a manner incorrect and in trying to make the necessary adjustment, Kercher lost his balance, fell from a platform and landed headfirst on some heavy timber. His skull was fractured and, when Dr. W. F. Long, of Longswamp, arrived, the physician deemed it advisable to remove the injured man to the hospital, where he died less than an hour after he was admitted. Kercher is survived by his wife and several children.
