John Heinrich Heimbach, better known as “Hunds John,” died recently in the Berks county almshouse. He had been taken there one cold day last winter, being found nearly frozen in an old smithy at Siesholtzville, his half-starved jackass and a number of dogs lying around. His feet were so badly frozen that he could never use them again, yet he expected to resume his former business but his exposures were too much for him. His early life was spent in the vineyards along the Rhine, and 30 years ago he came to Pennsylvania. Known as “Dog John,” Heimbach for 25 years went about the country selling dogs, an old horse pulling a covered wagon in which he kept his cooking and sleeping outfit. Sometimes he would have 25 dogs in his pack.

Mrs. Alice R. Heist, estimable wife of Charles A. Heist, of Shoenersville, clerk in the office of Mervin A. Wertman, county superintendent of schools, died at 6:15 o'clock last evening at the Sacred Heart hospital after an illness of two months. She was in her 64th year. In the death of Mrs. Heist the Shoenersville church loses one of its most faithful and active members. Taken ill exactly two months prior to her death, Mrs. Heist first suffered from lumbago and rheumatism. Later complications arose and brought about her demise. During the three weeks she was confined to bed at her home and since April 24, when she was removed to the hospital, Mrs. Heist bore up with great fortitude and was a patient sufferer. The high esteem in which she was held by her friends was clearly manifest in the numerous persons in the community calling at the hospital and others inquiring daily concerning her condition by telephone. Mrs. Heist was born in Rockland township, Berks county, a daughter of William and Sarah, nee Roth, Schlegel, and had been a resident of Shoenersville since January, 1890. On Christmas day in 1880, she was united in marriage to Mr. Heist by the Rev. B. E. Kramlich, at Kutztown. Devoutly religious and of kindly Christian qualities, Mrs. Heist was dearly loved by all in the community in which she resided. She was a member of the Lutheran congregation of the Shoenersville church and for a long term of years was assistant superintendent of the primary department of the Sunday school. She was one of the most active members of the Ladies Aid society of the church, having been a diligent and untiring worker in the various activities of the organization. She was one of the group largely instrumental in raising the funds for the new pipe organ which was presented and placed in the church by the Ladies Aid society in 1927. Besides her husband, Mrs. Heist leaves to mourn her passing four children, Beulah, wife of Wilson S. Bilheimer, and Hilda E., wife of Ralph Shankweiler, both of Shoenersville; Harvey L. Heist, Shoenersville, and Allen W. Heist, this city. There also survive ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, together with her aged mother, Mrs. Sarah Schlegel, of Boyertown; five sisters, Mrs. Frank Moyer, New Berlinsville; Mrs. George Luft, Boyertown R. 3; Mrs. Mary Hoch, Reading; Mrs. Jerome Gibson, Fleetwood, and Mrs. Edwin Kemp, Lyons, and four brothers, Frank Schlegel, Boyertown; Irvin Schlegel, Morysville; George Schlegel, Leesport R. 1, and Clyde Schlegel, Breinigsville. A daughter, Florence, died in infancy. Her father, William Schlegel, was killed in a railroad accident at Lyons, where he was employed as a crossing watchman, on New year's day about thirteen years ago. Arrangements for Mrs. Heist's funeral had not been completed last night.

Death came swiftly to the Rev. Nevin W. Helffrich, the well known clergyman of the Reformed denomination, at his home in Allentown shortly after midnight Friday morning. He had been ailing for nearly a week and on Monday a large carbuncle developed, the pain of which prevented him from resting. Thursday night, instead of retiring, he remained seated in a chair and at quarter past twelve o'clock was suddenly stricken. He lived only a few moments afterward. The Helffrich family had for four generations a representative in the ministry of the Reformed Church. The progenitor of the family in this country was the Rev. Johann Heinrich Helffrich, who landed at New York on January 14, 1772. He settled in what is now Weisenberg township. His grandson was the father of the Rev. Nevin W. Helffrich. Rev. Helffrich was the second son of Rev. Wm. A. Helffrich, D.D., and his wife, Amanda, daughter of Solomon Fogel, Esq., and was born at Fogelsville on May 4, 1855. He was educated in the schools of the township, studying later at Heidelberg College, from which he graduated. Later he graduated from the Ursinus College Theological Seminary, and in 1879, was examined, licensed and appointed as his father's assistant in the charge which he served up to the time of his death. The charge which Rev. Helffrich served and which had been developed successively by his great-grandfather, grandfather and father, consisted of Heidelberg, Lynnville, Longswamp and Ziegel church congregations. In these charges his period of service extended from his ordination as a minister to his death and by ceaseless activity upbuilt the charges materially and spiritually. Rev. Mr. Helffrich is survived by his aged mother, residing at Fogelsville, his wife, who is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Hoffman; one daughter, Mrs. Elwood Schaeffer; two sons, John and James, all of Allentown, and these brothers: Dr. John Helffrich, of Allentown; Rev. Helffrich, of Bath, and Dr. Calvin Helffrich, of Fogelsville. The Helffrich family has served the Ziegel church congregation for over 100 years. The funeral was held on Monday and was very largely attended. Services were held and interment made on the family plot at Ziegel church, Maxatawny.
