Mrs. Catharine Gabel, in her 102d year, Interred at Boyertown - 2000 People and Four Generations Follow her to the Grave
The funeral of Mrs. Catharine Gabel, aged 101 years 5 months and 5 days, took place on Saturday morning, May 29th, at 9 o'clock, from her late residence in Gabelsville, Berks county. The attendence was very large, an assemblage of people numbering 2,000 or more, with several hundred carriages, followed the centenarian to the tomb. Among those present were all of the surviving children (there were eleven, of whom seven are living), were present, themselves a most remarkable group of aged people, as follows: - Mrs. Elizabeth Gabel (widow of Henry H. Gabel) who was in her 83rd year; Mrs. Magdalena Ehst, in her 81st year; Henry H Gabel, of Pottstown, in his 79th year; Mrs. Susan Landis, in 75th year, Mrs. Mary Gabel, in 71st year; Jacob H Gabel, of Pottstown, in his 66th year, and Barbara Gabel in her 65th year. And there were white-headed grandchildren of the deceased present, the oldest being about age 58 years of age, several of these grandchildren being grandparents themselves. And there were present a large number of great-grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren, or representatives of the fifth generation, who came as mourners to this most extraordinary funeral, the likes of which, as to age of the deceased and her descendents, and of the number of generations assembled, has scarcely ever been seen in this part of the county. The number of direct descendents of Mrs. Gabel present was probably 80 to 100, and they came from Boyertown, Pottstown, Reading, and Philadelphia, and other places widely apart.
The venerable woman in the coffin had an almost unwrinkled face, and it was remarked that she had the appearance of a woman of only 65 to 70 years old. And yet she was born (Catharine High) on December 19 1784, more than four years before Washington became President and she was a girl of 15 years when he died. She was married in 1802 to Jacob Gabel, and her husband died September 29th, 1823. Her mother, Magdalena High, died in her 90th year, and her husband's father, Henry Gabel, died in his 94th year.
There were five or six ministers present at the funeral on Saturday. Rev. Jacob Hunsicker, of East Coventry (Mennonite) spoke at the house in English, and Rev. Jacob B Mensch (also Mennonite) at the house in German. Rev. Jacob Meschter (Schwenkfelder) of Palm, Montgomery county, made a prayer at the church, in German; Rev. Andrew Mock[sic Mack] of Douglass township, Montgomery county, delivered the funeral sermon at the church in German, taking his text from the 14th Chapter and the 13th verse of Revelations - "And I heard a voice from heaven saying to unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them." After the funeral sermon, a prayer was made in German by Rev. L. Groh (Lutheran), of Boyertown.
After the religious exercises, the remains of the aged woman were laid away to rest in the Mennonnite burial ground at Boyertown, beside her husband, who had been sleeping there nearly sixrty-three years. The undertaker was Daniel D. Brumbach, of Boyertown, and the pall-bearers John Fegely, Amos Hartman, Isaac Reinert, and Killian F. Wise.
After the funeral over one hundred and fifty carriages returned to the house of mourning at Gabelsville.
Another Funeral
Lavina Gabel, age 46, a grand-daughter of Catharine Gabel, and a daughter of Mary Gabel and the late David Gabel, and who died at the same house, was buried at the Mennonite burial ground at Boyertown. The religious services at the Mennonite meeting house were intended for both. The pall-bearers for Lavina Gabel were John Fehr, Conrad Fisher, John Fegely, Jr., and William Yoder.

HENRY H. GABEL OF POTTSTOWN IS DEAD. Was a Native of Boyertown, And One of the Owners Gabel Ore Mines Here Henry H. Gabel, Pottstown's most venerable citizen, died last Sunday evening says the Pottstown News ?[sic] The end came peacefully, and was not unexpected, as he had been ill from grip for about ten days, and at his advanced age it was hardly possible for him to survive the attack. Had Mr. Gabel lived to see March 5, he would have attained the age of 93 years. Mr. Gabel was surrounded by the immediate members of his family at the end.
He was born March 5, 1808, in Colebrookdale, Berks County, and came from sturdy, thrifty German ancestry. His great-grandfather emigrated to this country from Alsace, Germany, in 1736, and settled in Berks County. All the Gabels have been noted for longevity. His grandfather, Henry Gabel, died in 1828, aged 93 years. His mother lived to the remarkable age of 101 years, dying May 24, 1886.
Mr. Gabel inherited traits of shrewdness and thrift, and went to work at an early age on a farm. He received his education in the schools of Colebrookdale Township and for a time operated the homestead farm. Later he engaged in the milling business, with which he continued to be identified until he retired from active life. His start in milling was made at the Colebrookdale grist mill, now operated as the Boyertown roller mills, by his namesake nephew Henry G. Gabel.
In 1856 Mr. Gabel went to Pottstown and in partnership with his brother, Jacob, under the firm name of H. & J. Gabel, purchased the Pottstown roller mills. They operated these mills until 1867, when the firm became Gabel, Bertolette & Company, who continued the business until 1883. Becoming interested in ore mining in 1878, Mr. Gabel formed the firm of Gabel, Jones & Gabel, and engaged in this work at Boyertown. This firm also leased a furnace at Bechtelsville and operated this in connection with the mines until 1890, when they abandoned the mines on account of flooding.
Eleven years ago Mr. Gabel retired from active life and devoted his time to his extensive real estate investments. He owned three large farms in York and James Counties, in Virginia, and, in partnership with his brother Jacob, owned the valuable Mill Park property, comprising the hotel, race track and 240 acres of ground in Pottstown. In addition he owned much real estate about the town.
The genial face and heavy figure of Henry Gabel have been familiar sights upon the streets of Pottstown for many years. Recently, however, declining health and old age had kept him confined to his home, and it was only upon bright days, that he ventured out upon the porch. There are few men who have commanded the respect of their fellow men during a long business career that Henry Gabel held. Scrupulously honest himself, he insisted upon others acting in like manner. He was frequently in a position to take advantage of those reduced in circumstance but he preferred to extend a helping hand to them instead.
On September 25, 1835, he married Fredericka Kurtz, a daughter of Mathias Kurtz, who survives him. This couple lived together for a period of nearly 66 years. The following named children are living: Angelina, widow of Wilson H. Gilbert; Sarah, wife of Charles Himmelwright, of Virginia; Elmira, wife of Robert J. Baldwin; Barbara, wife of William Fitzsimmons; Miss Emma Gabel. His brother, Jacob, who had been his partner during nearly all his business career, survives him.
The funeral will be held this morning at 11 o'clock. Services at the house. Interment at Pottstown Cemetery.

Charles N. Gery, one of the oldest residents in Berks county, passed away at Siesholtzville, aged 94 years. His brother, Michael N., died at the age of 88 years about 10 days ago. Charles N. was the father of County Treasurer E. C. Gery and was the oldest member of the Gery Family Reunion Association. Mr. Gery was well known in eastern Berks and all through Lehigh county. Deceased was born in Upper Hanover township, Montgomery county, Oct. 28, 1822. When less than a year old, his parents settled in Hereford township. Here he received his education in the pay schools, then in vogue. Remaining on the farm until he was 18, he then entered the store at Henningsville, in Longswamp township, as a clerk, and worked there for four years. In 1845 he moved to Siesholtzville, where in partnership with his father he conducted a general store for a year and a half. Later they conducted a store at Harlem (then Perryville) for eight and a half years, dissolving partnership at the end of that time. Upon his return to Siesholtzville the deceased again engaged in the store business, and ever since he had been interested in that vocation. The store's firm name was Gery & Moll, the latter William B. Moll, a son-in-law. In 1854 President Pierce appointed Mr. Gery as postmaster, and he served until 1908, when the office was abolished and a rural route started. In 1848 Mr. Gery married Elizabeth Moll. Besides the three sons who survive, three daughters are deceased.
