Ebbert, Irwin W.

Among the local survivors of Irwin W. Ebbert, 77, of West Reading, who died March 21 in the Lutheran Home at Topton, where he had been a patient since Jan. 14, is a daughter, Donna L. (Ebbert) Showers, Hamburg.

Eberly, Ernest G.

Graveside services were held for Ernest G. Eberly of Fleetwood, in Fairview (Belleman's) Cemetery, Centre Township. Eberly died Feb. 26 in St. Joseph Medical Center, where was a patient. The husband of Elsie R. (Unterkofler) Eberly, he was born in Hamburg. He was a son of the late George F. and Elsie (Heinly) Eberly. Eberly was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. Until retiring in 1982, he was employed by the Carpenter Technology Corp., Reading, for 31 years as a press operator. Eberly was a member of Salem (Belleman's) Church, Centre Township. Surviving are two brothers, Stewart, Fleetwood, and Donald, Greensboro, N.C. Walter R. Christ Funeral Home Inc., Laureldale, is in charge of arrangements.

Eberly, Mary

Mrs. Emanuel Eberly Mary, wife of Emanuel Eberly, died of dropsy, aged 58 years, at her home in Fritztown, after an illness of nearly three years, at 8 a.m. Friday. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. William H. Marks; also two brothers: Abraham Fisher, Kurtz House; Jeremiah Fisher, Lower Heidelberg. She was a member of St. John's Reformed Church, Sinking Spring. Funeral, Wednesday morning, July 13, at 9:30 o'clock. Services at the church at Sinking Spring.

Ebert, Marie R.

Services were held in the Keller Funeral Home, Fogelsville, for Marie R. Ebert, formerly of Kempton, who died Nov. 6 in the Lutheran Home at Topton. Burial was in New Bethel (Zion) Cemetery, Krumsville. Born in Breinigsville, Lehigh County, she was a daughter of the late Irwin and Libby (Held) Ebert. Until retiring, she was employed as the sexton at St. Paul's Union Church, Seiberlingsville, Lehigh County, for 45 years. She was also employed as a packer by various shoe factories in Kutztown and Macungie for several years. She was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church, Krumsville. Surviving is a brother, Stanley Ebert, in Pennsylvania.

Ebert - In Miamie county, Ohio, December 25th, 1875, Sarah, widow of the long deceased Henry Ebert, and daughter of John and Susanna Braun Radenbach, fomerly of Berks county, in the 84th year of her age.

Ebey, Catherine R.

Mrs. C. Ebey Dies at Age 86. Mrs. Catherine R. EBEY, 86, 431 Clay, died Wednesday at a local hospital. She was born Aug. 28, 1874, at Redding, Pa., and came to Topeka with her parents in 1880. Mrs. Ebey was secretary in the Masonic Grand Lodge office at 8th and Harrison for 40 years before she retired. She was a member of the Topeka Council No. 1., Toltec Rite, Topeka Chapter No. 462, Order of the Eastern Star, Aldrich No. 17, Women's Relief Corps, and Lady Sheriden Tent No. 30, Daughters of Union Veterans. Mrs. Ebey attended the Church of Christ, Scientist. Survivors include one son, Chester F. Ebey of the home; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the Wall-Diffenderfer Chapel with burial in Rochester Cemetery.

Ebling, Harold W.

Services were held for Harold W. "High Pockets" Ebling, 83, of Knoll Lane, Gilbertsville, formerly of Hereford, who died August 18 in his home. He was the widower of Pauline (Edinger) Ebling. Born in Bern Township, he was a truck driver for West Motor Freight, Berman Trucking Co. and General Door Corp., retiring in 1982. Ebling served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the Pike Township Sportsmen's Association, the Friendship Hook and Ladder Fire Company in Boyertown, the Liberty Fire Company, New Berlinville, the Keystone Fire Company, Bechtelsville and the Gilbertsville Fire Company, Gilbertsville. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Boyertown. Surviving is a son, Glen C. Ebling, Royersford; two daughters, Carol A. Burns, Reading and Linda G. Ebling, Tucson, Ariz. Two half-brothers, John Ehling of Bechtelsville and Stanley Ehling of Pottstown; a half-sister, Sue Stoudt of New Berlinville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a half -brother and a half-sister. Burial was in the Strausstown Union Cemetery, Strausstown. The arrangements were handled by the Linwood W. Ott Funeral Home, Boyertown.

In Alsace, on the 18th inst., John Ebling, Sr., aged 80 years and 4 months. The deceased had 10 children, 51 grand-children and 4 great-grandchildren.

Ebling, Loreen N.

Memorial services were held May 3 in Bern Lutheran Church, Bern Township, for Loreen N. Ebling, 74, who died Nov. 18 in her Columbus, Indiana residence. She was a native of Centerport. Burial was private in Good Shepard Cemetery, Tuckerton. The Leibensperger Funeral Home, Centerport, was in charge of arrangements.

Eby--In this city, on the 3d inst., Maria S., wife of Jacob Z. Eby, aged 70 years, 2 months and 18 days. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, without further notice from her late residence, 418 Franklin street, Saturday at 11 a.m. Services at the house. Interment private in Charles Evans cemetery.

Eck, Albert J.

Albert J. Eck, for the past three years chief engineer at the Allentown hospital and, prior to that, engineer at the Daeufer Brewing company for a period of thirty years, died yesterday afternoon at his home, 1923 Tilghman street, from a complication of ailments. He was 63 years old. Mr. Eck, in failing health for the past year, only last week returned from a motor trip to his stepson, Luther Abele, in Cleveland, and his demise yesterday will come as a great shock to his friends, particularly those who knew him while he was in the brewing plant before prohibition days. Mr. Eck is survived by his wife, two sons, Clarence, of Reading; Calvin, of this city; one daughter, Mrs. Robert Erie, of this city; three step-children, Miss Anna Abele, and Russell Abele, of this city; Luther Abele, of Cleveland; a brother, Morris, of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. A. J. Boyer, and Mrs. W. R. Keiser, both of Topton. Funeral services will be held at his late home, 1923 Tilghman street, on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Rev. W. F. Bond, pastor of the Longswamp Lutheran church, where he was baptized, will officiate. Interment will be made in the Longswamp cemetery.

Eck, Alfred F.

Alfred F. Eck, son of the late Jonas and Carolina (Meinhardt) Eck, Topton, died yesterday in the Allentown hospital of complications. He was 64 years old. He had been employed for many years at the Topton Foundry company where he had charge of the japanning furnace. He was a member of the Lutheran church of Maxatawny. His wife, Harriette (Kline) Eck, preceded him in death some years ago. Survivors are four brothers: Peter and Thomas, Kutztown; William and Harvey, Allentown; two sisters, Mary, Allentown, and Mrs. Ida Krauss, Riegelsville. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. from the funeral home of Shofer and Son, Topton, with further services in the Maxatawny church. Burial will be made in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. W. S. Dry will officiate.

Eck, Alphenus L.

An attack of apoplexy which he suffered shortly after 3 o'clock yesterday morning proved fatal to Alphenus L. Eck, of Bally, when he died at his home there yesterday morning at 3.30 o'clock. He was 75 years old, having just celebrated his natal day four days ago. Mr. Eck was apparently in good health and still actively engaged as a huckster. He returned home from his regular Wednesday trip to Pottstown as usual on Wednesday night and ate a hearty supper. At about three o'clock he got out of bed and walked to the window, later re-entering bed where he died. Deputy Coroner Dr. C. L. Dries pronounced death due to apoplexy. There survive to mourn his loss his wife, Fianna, nee Ruppert, Eck, and the following children: Joseph Eck and Mrs. William Witman, of Bally, Mrs. Tobias Witman, of Allentown; Mary, of Reading, and Mrs. Howard Diehl, of East Greenville. Twenty-four grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive. Funeral services will be held from his late home at Bally on Monday morning at 8.30 o'clock with a solemn high requiem high mass in the Church of the Most Blessed sacrament, Bally, at 9 o'clock. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church. Friends may call at his late home on Sunday evening from 7 to 9 o'clock.

Eck, Alvin E.

Alvin E. Eck, 84, of 133 Main St., Emmaus, died in a local hospital yesterday after a short illness. Born in Longswamp Township, Berks County, he was a son of Evan and Carolina (Deh) Eck. A resident of Emmaus for 30 years, he had been a farmer before that in Lower Macungie Township. He was a member of the Western Salisbury Church and the Emmaus Nest of Owls. His wife, Sybilla (Schmoyer) Eck, died 22 years ago. One son, Morris, Emmaus; 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, survive. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday from the Horace Schantz Funeral Home, 3rd and Main Sts., Emmaus.

Anna Maria (Reinert), widow of Benneville Eck, died at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Romig, at Shamrock, aged 78 years. She was a native of Longswamp township and was a member of the Reformed congregation of Longswamp church. Her husband died four years ago. Surviving are these children: Eugene, Richland; John, Luther and Mahlon, Allentown; Mrs. Charles Weaknecht and Mrs. Charles Reifsnyder, Topton; Harry and James Eck, and Mrs. Harry Romig, Shamrock; 21 grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Lydia Fretz, Alburtis R.D. Funeral Saturday at 1:30 from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Romig, Shamrock. Further services in Longswamp church, the Rev. Donald Englert officiating.

Eck, Benneville

Benneville Eck, venerable resident of Shamrock, where he lived with his son, Harry, passed away following a stroke of apoplexy yesterday, a little over an hour before the burial of his sister, Mrs. Mary Druckenmiller, who died last Tuesday. He was almost eighty-two years of age. A son of Evan and Caroline, nee Dey, he was born in Longswamp township, Berks county, and lived in that district the greater part of his life. He was a member of the Reformed congregation of Longswamp church where he was loved and respected by all who knew him. He also held membership in Washington Camp, No. 97, P.O.S. of A., of Alburtis, and the Ninth Street Mill Beneficial association, Reading. Mr. Eck�s wife, Annie, nee Reinert, survives him as do the following sons, Eugene, Richland; John, Luther, Mahlon, of Allentown; Harry and James, Shamrock; daughters, Mrs. Charles Reifsnyder and Mrs. Charles Weaknecht, Topton; Mrs. Harry Romig, Shamrock; nineteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. �nk Druckenmiller, Mertztown; and two brothers, Manoah, of Allentown, and Alvin, Emaus. One daughter, Cora, preceded him in death four months ago. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1:30 from the home of his son, Harry, at Shamrock. Short services at the house will be followed by continued services in the Longswamp church, Rev. William F. Bond officiating. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

Eck, Betty Jane

Betty Jane, 16 months, only child of Earl and Annie (nee Boyer) Eck, tenants on the farm of Frank Shankweiler, just outside of Alburtis on the road leading to Shamrock, was drowned yesterday afternoon about four o'clock when she fell into an open cistern to the rear of the house during the absence of her mother, who left the kitchen where she was preparing supper to go down in the yard to feed the chickens. When Mrs. Eck returned to the house, she missed the child and surmising her fate excitedly called neighbors. A half-hour later the body was found floating in the cistern and several men living nearby recovered it with the aid of a ladder. The cistern had a depth of eighteen feet of water. Dr. E. H. Mohr, of Alburtis, was summoned bu the baby was beyond aid. After Coroner Fred Bausch was notified, the body was turned over to undertaker Delong, Topton. Betty Jane is survived by her parents, sadly bereaved by the fate which has befallen their only child. The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1.30 o'clock standard time from the home of the parents. Following short services there, regular services will be conducted in the Longswamp church and interment will be made in the adjoining cemetery.

Eck, Catherine Ann

Catherine Ann, wife of Mangus A. Eck, died Sunday at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Arlington Britton, Reading, aged 72 years. There survive her husband, one daughter, Mary E., wife of Arlington Britton; a son, Thomas G., Reading; 12 grandchildren and two brothers, James Carl, Allentown, and Alfred Carl, Emaus. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Anna Carl.

Eck, Charles

Charles Eck, of Mertztown R.D., died at the Allentown hospital on Friday morning from injuries received on Thursday evening when the buggy in which he was riding was struck by a Reading railroad shifting engine. The accident happened at the Haas crossing in Topton shortly after five o'clock. Mr. Eck, who was in his seventieth year, was a son of the late Evan and Carilona, nee Dey, Eck. He was a life long member of the Longswamp church and was employed as a laborer in the Topton Foundry up to the time of his death. His wife, Sarah, nee Folk, and the following children survive: Mrs. Louis Houser, of Allentown; Charles W., of Mertztown; Fred, of Reading, and Mrs. Samuel Breidigan, of Fleetwood, R.D. Twelve grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters also survive: Mrs. Mary Druckenmiller, Mrs. Frank Druckenmiller and William Eck, of Mertztown; Beneville Eck, of Shamrock; Manoah Eck, of Hokendauqua; Joseph Eck, of Mertztown R.D., and Alvin Eck, of Emaus. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. from his late home near Mertztown, followed by further services at Longswamp church and interment in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. W. L. Meckstroth will officiate.

Eck, Charles A.

Charles A. Eck, 67, for many years owner and operator of the Eck and Fisher Ice Cream firm, died at 4:15 a.m. yesterday at his home, 333 N. 15th St. Born in Longswamp, Lehigh county (sic), he was the son of the late Thomas and Tillah (Isamoyer) Eck. He resided in Allentown for the past 49 years and was retired for 10 years. He was a member of the Franklin Fire Co. Surviving are two sisters, Mary, wife of George Dankel of Reading, and Carrie, wife of Charles Fenstermacher of Kutztown. Funeral services will be held at the J. S. Burkholder funeral home, 1601 Hamilton St., on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be made in the Longswamp cemetery, near Emmaus.

Eck, Charles B.

Charles B. Eck, one of Longswamp township's oldest residents and a well known and retired farmer in that community, died Tuesday morning at his home near Pilgert's schoolhouse, Alburtis R.D. 1, from a heart attack, in his 88th year. Mr. Eck was born, reared and resided nearly all his life in the community in which he died. He was a son of the late Jonathan and Elizabeth, nee Eck, Eck. His first wife, Elizabeth, nee Fegley, Eck, died many years ago. There survives his widow, Sabina, nee Beitler, Eck, one son, Sepharious Eck, at home, two grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a step-sister, Mrs. Alvin Miller, Mertztown R.D. Mr. Eck was a member of the Lutheran wing of Huffs church. The funeral will be held from his late home on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. All services will be conducted at the house, Rev. W. F. Bond, of Shamrock, officiating. Interment will be made in Huff church cemetery.

Eck, Clement V.

Eck, David

David Eck, aged 27 years, a moulder employed in the Kutztown Foundry and Machine Company's plant, had his life crushed out by a 1,500-pound box of sand while at work about 6 p.m. Monday. Mr. Eck, with William Gray, Jos. Haney and Francis Brobst, all of Kutztown, and Edwin Grim, of Maxatawny, were at work in a sand pit, six to eight feet deep, where they were constructing a sand mold. Eck was working around a metal cylinder. Without a bit of warning, the sides of the pit caved in. The 1,500-pound box of sand, which had stood on the edge of the hole, struck Mr. Eck in the abdomen, pinning him against the cylinder and causing almost instantaneous death. The heavy box broke two ribs just below the heart. His fellow workmen escaped injury. Mr. Eck returned from work Monday evening and ate supper. He appeared to be uncomfortable, and said he was of a mind not to return to work that night. He said he felt sure something was going to happen. His fears were allayed, and he left the house in a more cheerful mood. Deputy Coroner Dr. H. W. Saul viewed the remains and issued a certificate of accidental death. Deceased was born in Longswamp and was a son of Jonas and Carolina (nee Meinhart) Eck. Besides his widow, Carrie (nee Tyson), his parents, a daughter, Helen; and these brothers and sisters survive: Charles and Morris, both of Kutztown; Harvey, of Wescoesville; William, of East Texas; Henry and Alvin, both of Mertztown; Peter, of Reading; Alice, wife of John O. Reinert, of Shamrock; Mary, Kutztown; Sallie, wife of Oliver Brown, of Kutztown, and Ida, wife of George Sauer, Birdsboro. Funeral, Saturday, Jan. 4, at 9 a.m. Rev. W. F. Bond will officiate. Interment in Longswamp cemetery, Undertaker J. H. Stump has charge.

Eck, David B.

The body of David B. Eck, 23, of Kutztown R. 3, was found yesterday lying in an open field in Richmond Township, Berks County, according to police. Fleetwood police Sgt. Donald E. Perry said a .22-caliber handgun was found next to the body. Fery Treichler, a Kutztown R. 3 farmer, found the body in one of his fields at about 10 a.m. Eck had been shot once in the chest. Eck lived in the E&Y Farms and Apartment Complex, Richmond Township, near where his body was found. The body was taken to Reading Hospital after Eck was pronounced dead at the scene by Berks County Deputy Coroner John L. Myers. An autopsy was scheduled for this morning. According to Perry, a bow hunter reported seeing Eck in the field about 6:30 a.m., shortly before he heard a noise that sounded like a gunshot. He was last employed as a guard at David Crystal, Inc., Laureldale, Berks County. Born in Allentown, he was a son of Mrs. Dorothy F. (Gehman) Eck of Kutztown R. 1 and the late Gerald L. Eck. Surviving with his mother are a brother, Dennis M., of Kutztown R. 1, and the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna V. Eck of Topton. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Trexler and Hook Funeral Home, 25 E. Weiss St., Topton. There will be no calling hours.

Eck, Edwin

Edwin Eck, 58, died at his home at Eagle Point, near Kutztown, yesterday afternoon. He was ill for the last two weeks. He was born in Mertztown, Berks county, the son of the late William and Caroline, nee Youse, Eck. He was employed by the Berks Block Co., Reading, and resided near Kutztown for many years. Surviving are his wife, Florence, nee Kemmerer, Eck, one daughter, Mrs. John Schueck, Alburtis, and one sister, Mrs. Elwood Derr, Allentown.

Eck, Elda (nee Smith)

After an illness of two weeks of typhoid fever, Elda Eck, wife of George Eck, of No. 1348 Gordon street, died at one o'clock yesterday morning, aged 21 years. She was a native of Topton and is survived by her mother, Mrs. Smith, her husband and one child.

Fianna L. Eck, widow of Alphenus Eck, of Bally, died yesterday in the Sacred Heart hospital, Allentown. She was 83 years old. Daughter of the late Amandus and Elizabeth (Landis) Ruppert, she had lived most of her life in Bally. For the past year she had been living with a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Diehl, at 203 4th St., East Greenville. She was a member of the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic church, Bally. Four daughters, Mrs. Sallie (William) Witman, Bally; Mary Eck, West Lawn; Mrs. Helen (Tobias) Witman, Allentown; Mrs. Emma (Howard) Diehl, East Greenville; a son, Joseph of Bally; 23 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren survive. The funeral will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Whitman, Bally. Solemn requiem high mass will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic church, Bally. Burial will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Franklin Eck, aged 74 years, died Tuesday morning at the residence of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ruel Reitenour, near Mertztown. He was a member of the Lutheran congregation of the Longswamp church. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Eck. His wife, Mollie, nee Hilbert, preceded him in death by five years. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ruel Reitenour, with whom he resided; five grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Steffey, of Topton, and Mrs. William DeLong, of Reading, and a brother, Mathias Eck, of Pottstown. Brief services at the residence of his daughter Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock will be followed by services in the Longswamp church, Rev. William F. Bond officiating. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church.

After ailing with a complication of ills for some time, Fred S. Eck, of 336 Wood street, Reading, died yesterday morning at 10 o'clock at the St. Joseph hospital there at the age of 43 years. Mr. Eck was a native of Mertztown where he resided until about ten years ago when he removed to Reading to enter the employ of the Parish Pressed Steel company. He was a son of Mrs. Sarah, nee Folk, Eck and the late Charles Eck. He was a member of the Lutheran congregation of the Longswamp church. Besides his aged mother, who resided at Mertztown R. D., he is survived by his widow Ella, nee Reppert, two children, Alma and Lillian, at home; a brother, Charles W. Eck, of Mertztown, and two sisters, Mrs. Louise Houser, this city, and Mrs. Samuel Greidigam, of Fleetwood R.D. The funeral will be held Saturday with services at his late home at 11 o'clock in the morning followed by regular services in the Longswamp church. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church. Rev. William F. Bond, of Shamrock, will officiate.

Eck, H. Elsworth

H. Elsworth Eck, 69, a former resident of Longswamp township, Berks county, died yesterday morning in the Atlantic City hospital, one week after he had been admitted there while suffering from a heart ailment. Until three years ago, Eck, who spent the earlier portion of his life in Longswamp township, had been living in Philadelphia. He then moved to the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William Moise, in Atlantic City, after the death of his wife. His affiliations include the Kutztown chapter of the Knights of the Golden Eagle and the Junior Mechanics of Kutztown. Surviving in addition to his son-in-law and daughter, are one sister, Agnes Eck, Allentown; two brothers, Edgar, Emaus, and Elwood, Jamestown, North Dakota, and one grandson, Warren Moise, Atlantic City. Funeral services will be held at 1 o�clock Tuesday afternoon from the Gonser Memorial chapel in Kutztown, with interment in Fairview cemetery, Kutztown.

Eck, Hannah (nee Adam)

Hannah, widow of Thomas Eck, nee Adam, died on Thursday, at 1 p.m., of Bright's disease and dropsy at her home near the Five Points, aged 52 years. Deceased had been ill two weeks. Her husband died five years ago. The following brothers and sisters remain: Peter and John Adam, of Moselem; Mrs. Kate Bushey, of Virginsville, and Mrs. Nathan Reinert, of Richmond. She leaves the following children: Charles, Jacob, John, Gertie and James. Funeral on Tuesday, December 18, at 9.30 a.m. Services and interment at Longswamp Church, Rev. D. K. Humbert, of Bower's Station, officiating.

Eck, Irvin O. "Herb"

Irvin O. "Herb" Eck, 74, well-known retired painting contractor who worked on many of the larger business buildings in this city, died at 5:10 p.m. yesterday at his home, 433 N. 9th St. Mr. Eck was in ill health for five years and bedfast since September, 1948. He was a native of Longswamp township, May 17, 1875, Berks county, a son of the late George and Mary (Shoemaker) Eck. He resided in Allentown for 55 years, and was engaged in his painting business for 45 years, retiring in 1944 due to ill health. Mr. Eck was a charter member of the Franklin Fire Co., a member of St. Andrew's Evangelical and Reformed church and the Men's Bible class, Allentown aerie 110, FOE; Allen council 753, UOAM. There survive his wife, Mrs. Lizzie (Woodring) Eck; a daughter, Irene M., wife of William Reichenbach, Lehighton; two sons, Clarence G. and Myron A., both of Allentown; two grandchildren; a brother, Howard, East Toledo, O. His parents, a brother, George, and a sister, Laura, preceded him in death.

Eck, Jane (nee Miller)

Hurled from the machine her son was driving as the engine of the Kutztown Flier ripped the side from the car and threw her nearly fifty feet down and embankment, an aged Mertztown R. 2 woman was almost instantly killed yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock near Alburtis and her son was seriously injured. The dead woman is Mrs. Joseph Eck, 64, of Mertztown R. 2, who died en route to the Sacred Heart hospital in the Kutztown Flier, her head being badly crushed and other injuries about her body bringing death quickly. Preston Eck, 32, 1345 North Ninth street, Reading, son of the dead woman and driver of the car struck by the Reading Railroad train is in the Sacred Heart hospital suffering from shock, a fractured right leg and broken rib and it is believed he may have internal injuries also. Eck recently moved from Rochester, N.Y., to Reading and yesterday was his day off in the Rustic Restaurant there, where he is employed. He came to Mertztown R. 2 to visit his mother and took her for a visit to her daughter, Mrs. Clarence Merkle, East Texas. Mother and son were on their way home when the accident happened. The train had stopped at the Alburtis station and was picking up speed when it reached Lichtenwalner's Crossing, east of Alburtis, where the accident happened. Eck said last night to Patrolman Ralph Fleming, who investigated the accident, that he slowed down and looked up and down before starting across. He was almost over, Eck stated, when he saw the engine bear down upon him and the rear end of the car was struck. One side was ripped from Eck's sedan and Mrs. Eck was tossed from the car, down the steep twenty-five foot embankment and hurled for twenty-five feet more along the creek bed. Eck was still in the demolished car when the train was halted, the sedan balancing precariously on the brink of the embankment when the driver was liberated from the wreckage. The train was in charge of Engineer Morris Kratzer, of 247 North Eight street, city, and Conductor John Fiddler, also of this city. Mrs. Eck and her son were taken in the train which sped to this city, being met by the city ambulance at the terminal station and the injured man was then hurried to the hospital. Coroner Fred R. Bausch, M.D., viewed the body of Mrs. Eck last night and in conjunction with Patrolman Fleming, at the Bethlehem state patrol barracks, is conducting an investigation. The Eck family resides between Hancock and Mertztown on the side of South Mountain. Mrs. Eck was a native of that locality and resided there with her husband for a number of years. Before her marriage she was Jane Miller. There survives the husband and the following children, Mrs. Clarence Merkle, East Texas; Mrs. James Luckenbill, Topton; Preston, of Reading; Clarence, Raymond, Solomon, Earl, May, Beulah, Ida and Verna, at home. For a time a New York state driver's license carried by the injured man issued to Preston Eckert, Palmyra, N.Y., caused some confusion. Why the license was secured by Eck under the name of Eckert remained unexplained last night because of his condition.

Eck, Joel Orlando

Failing in health for the past several years, Joel Orlando Eck, a well known resident of Topton, died on Sunday afternoon at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John G. Boyer, of Topton, age 76 years, 2 months and 9 days. Mr. Eck was a native of Maxatawny and for a number of years farmed and prospected for ore in that section. He retired from active life five years ago. His wife, Sarah, nee Ahn, Eck, died four years ago. There survives the following children: Albert and Morris, of Allentown, and Mrs. John G. Boyer and Mrs. Geo. Keiser, of Topton. He was a son of Carl and Apolonia, nee Bennicoff, Eck. The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Boyer. Short services will be held at the house. Regular services and burial at Longswamp church. Rev. W. S. Bond, of Shamrock, will officiate.

Eck, John S.

After an illness of the past two years of a complication of ailments, John S. Eck, of 334 North Fulton street, died at 4.40 o'clock yesterday afternoon. He was 79 years of age. For forty-one years, Mr. Eck had been employed as a track foreman for the Lehigh Valley Transit company. He was born in Berks county, a son of Marcus and Anna Marie, nee Stahlnecker, Eck, and had been a resident of Allentown for the past fifty-two years. His wife, Mary, nee Schmoyer, died fifteen years ago. Mr. Eck was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He leaves to mourn his passing a daughter, Mrs. Frank Brady, and a son, David Eck, both of this city, together with thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Arrangements for the funeral had not been completed last night.

Joseph R. Eck, 81, of 2nd Street, Bally, husband of the late Stella (Rohrbach) Eck, died Thursday in Pottstown Medical Center. Born in Washington Township, Berks County, he was a son of the late Alphenus L. and Fayetta L. (Ruppert) Eck. Eck was a watchman at the Bally Block Co. until retiring in 1967 after 32 years. He was a member of the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Bally. Surviving are three sons, James of Bechtelsville R. 1, Theodore of Barto R. 1 and Francis of Quakertown; two daughters, Mrs. Helen Knickerbocker of Quakertown and Rose, wife of John Pandjak of Phoenixville; three sisters, Mrs. Mary L. Stengel of Reading, Mrs. Emma C. Diehl of East Greenville and Mrs. Helen Witman of Allentown; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be at 8:15 a.m. tomorrow in C. L. Losh Funeral Home, Boyertown, followed by a Requiem Mass at 9 a.m. in Most Blessed Sacrament Church. Viewing will be 7-9 p.m. today.

Eck, Mrs. Lando (nee DeLong)

Mrs. Lando Eck, daughter of Solomon A. and wife Catherine, nee DeLong, died Saturday evening at her home at Topton, after an illness of nearly a year, aged 70 years, 5 months, and 10 days. She is survived by two sons, Alfred and Morris, of Allentown, two daughters, Alice, wife of John Boyer, of Topton, and Elmira, wife of George Keiser, of Topton; three brothers, Jacob and Edwin of Allentown, and John, of Circleville, Ohio. Fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive. The funeral will be held from her late residence on Callowhill street, Topton, on Thursday morning at 9.30. Funeral services will be conducted in Longswamp church with the Rev. Bond officiating. Burial will be made in Longswamp cemetery.

Eck, Margaret

Services were held for Margaret (Moyer) Eck, 79, of Gilbertsville, who died February 18 in Pottstown Memorial Medical Center. She was the widow of William J. Eck II. Born in New Berlinville, she worked as a sewing machine operator for the Yocum Knitting Mill before retiring. She is survived by a son, William J. Eck III of Gilbertsville; and a half-sister. Contributions may be made to the Harvest Fellowship of Colebrookdale, 584 Colebrookdale Road, Boyertown, PA 19512. Burial was in Highland Memorial Park, Pottstown. The arrangements were handled by the Houck and Gofus Funeral Home, Pottstown.

Eck, Mary S. (nee Fegely)

Death early yesterday morning called Mrs. Mary S. Eck, wife of John F. Eck, at her home near Shamrock, after a seven year long illness of heart disease. She was in the fiftieth year of her age and during the past two weeks, complication set in to hasten her passing. She was the daughter of the late Ephriam and Emma, nee Burkey, Fegely and resided in the locality of Shamrock practically all of her life. She was a devote member of the Lutheran wing of Mertztown church and was a woman known for her neighborly qualities and charitable works. Mrs. Eck is survived by her husband, three daughters, Mrs. John Youse, Fleetwood; Mrs. Paul Meck, Alburtis, and Arlene, at home; on son, John, Jr., also at home. In addition she is survived by nine grandchildren, three brothers, Victor and William, Mertztown, and John, East Texas, and two sisters, Mrs. William Kratzer, East Texas, and Mrs. Reuben Wean, Pottstown. Funeral services will be held from her late home on Thursday at 1.30 p.m., with Rev. Wm. Dry officiating. Continued services will be held in the Mertztown church and interment will take place in the adjoining cemetery.

Eck, Mathias

Mathias Eck, 88, died Friday morning at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Wagner, 26 E. Main St., Pottstown, after an illness of several weeks. Born in Longswamp township, he was the son of Jacob and Rebekah, nee Erb, Eck. For 15 years, until his retirement a short time ago, he was employed as a night watchman by the Vaughan Knitting mills. His wife, Anna Hangen, died 19 years ago. Surviving are four children, Mabel, wife of John Wagner; Mayme, wife of George Hines of Philadelphia; Clarence and William of Pottstown; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Houck funeral home, 112 N. Washington Ave., Pottstown, with interment in Pottstown West End cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Eck, Melvin Harold

Melvin Harold, son of Claude J. and Elsie (nee DeLong) Eck, died Wednesday morning in the Reading hospital, aged 12 years, 4 months and 3 days. He had been ill of complications for several months. He was a member of St. Mark's Reformed church Sunday school, Reading. Besides the parents, there survive two sisters, Lillian and Dorothy, both at home in Reading. Short services will be held at the parents' home, 1408 Lincoln St., Reading, Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Continued services will be held at 3 o'clock in Longswamp church, and interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church. Rev. Gustave Potter will conduct the services at the house, and Rev. Donald Englert and Rev. William F. Bond will officiate at the church.

Eck, Robert J.

An illness of intestinal nephritis from which he had been suffering since last Christmas ended in the death of Robert J. Eck, of Sigmund, Zionsville R. 1, Sunday night at 9.10 o'clock at the Allentown hospital. He had been a patient there since last Friday. He was aged 26 years. Mr. Eck was born in Berks county, a son of John F. and Mary Fegely Eck. He was employed as a truck driver by Edwin Fox. He was a member of the Zionsville Lutheran church. Mr. Eck is survived by his wife, Annie, nee Snyder, his parents, a brother, John Eck Jr., at home; three sisters, Mrs. John Youse, Fleetwood; Mrs. Paul Meck, Longswamp, and Arlene, at home, and his parental grandfather, James Eck. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon with brief services at his late home at 2 o'clock. Continued services will be held in the Zionsville Reformed church, Rev. D. C. Kaufman officiating. Interment will be made in the Zionsville Lutheran cemetery.

Eck, Sallie Anne (nee Folk)

Sallie Anne Eck, widow of Charles Eck, died at her home, Mertztown R. D. 2, Thursday night of heart failure. She was aged 74 years, 4 months and a day. She was the daughter of the late Charles Folk and Catherine (nee Ramer) Folk. Her husband preceded her in death five years ago when he was killed in a railroad accident. She was well known in the section where she resided and was a faithful member of the Reformed congregation of the Longswamp church. She is survived by a son, Charles W. Eck of Mertztown, and two daughters, Mrs. L. P. Houser, Allentown, and Mrs. Samuel Breidigan, of Fleetwood. There also survive fifteen grandchildren and the following step-brothers and step-sisters: Mrs. Amanda R. Hutt, Pottstown; Mrs. Kate Bergy, Emaus; Mrs. Reuben Ringler, Kutztown; Harvey Dey, Hancock, and Withington Dey, Kutztown. The funeral will be held Wednesday, January 14, from her late home. Services will be held at the house at 9.30 a.m. with continued services in the Longswamp church. Interment will be made in the adjoining cemetery.

Eck, Samuel

Samuel Eck, aged and respected resident of Long Swamp Township, residing near Shamrock, died Saturday afternoon at his home of ailments incident to old age. For the past several years, he had been an invalid. He was aged 84 years, 5 months and 5 days. He was the son of the late Jacob and Rebecca, nee Eck, Eck, and since his natal day has resided in the same place. His wife preceded him in death twenty years ago. He was a member of the Lutheran wing of the Mertztown church. The deceased leaves the following to mourn his passing: one son, John; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and two brothers, Mathias Eck, Pottstown, and Frank Eck, Topton, and two sisters, Mrs. William Long, Reading, and Mrs. Sarah Steffey, Topton. Funeral services will be held from his late home on Wednesday at 2 o'clock, followed by continued services in the Mertztown church. Rev. Drey will officiate. Burial will be made in the adjoining cemetery.

Eck, William Edwin

William Edwin Eck, a respected resident of Mertztown, passed away at his home there yesterday morning, at the age of 79 years, 6 months and 19 days, following an illness with complications. He was born in Longswamp township, Berks county, son of the late Evan and Caroline, nee Dey, Eck. He was a member of the Lutheran congregation of Longswamp church, the P.O.S. of A., of Topton, and the Order of Independent Americans, of Mertztown. He leaves his widow, Caroline, nee Youse; a son, Edwin, of Alburtis R. D. 1; a daughter, Mrs. Alfred Derr, of alburtis, R.D. 1, and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Mary Druckenmiller, Shillington; Mrs. Frank Druckenmiller, Mertztown; Benneville Eck, Shamrock; Alvin Eck, Emaus, and Manoah Eck, Allentown. Eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive. The funeral will be held on Tuesday afternoon, September 5, at 1.30, at his late home in Mertztown. Short services at the house will be followed by services in Longswamp church. Interment will be made in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Wm. F. Bond, of Shamrock, will officiate. Eck, Wilson T.

The funeral of Wilson T. Eck took place from his residence, 929 North 11th st., and was well attended. The remains rested in a walnut coffin. The tributes were a star and cross, from the family, and a sheaf of wheat, clasped in the hands, from Ellen Heim. A delegation of the Plasterer's union of which deceased was a member attended. The following members served as bearers: George Albright, Martin Jones, William Reinert and Solomon Miller. Services were held at St. Paul's Catholic church where Rev. Father Borneman celebrated low mass. Interment at Catholic cemetery. Felix & Son, undertakers, had charge. It having been rumored that Mr. Eck died from injuries by being beaten by unknown parties, Dr. Baugh, resident physician at St. Joseph's hospital, notified Coroner Kantner. Dr. Baugh at once summoned the coroner, and they made an examination of the body. After hearing the testimony of a brother-in-law, Coroner Kantner refused the request for a post mortem as he was sure that death was not caused by any injuries but was due to heart failure. The testimony of Dr. Baugh, as taken by Coroner Kantner, was to the effect that Eck had told him that he had been severely kicked, and that there were marks on his back and hips, but that the only one he complained of was at the hips and that was not of such a nature as to cause death.

Among the local survivors of David S. Eckenroad, 83, formerly of Wyomissing, who died Nov. 29 in ManorCare Health Services, Spring Township, where he had resided since Aug. 19, is a son, James D. Eckenroad, Mohrsville.

Eckelmann, Vera M.

Vera M. Eckelmann, 76, of 611 James St., Sinking Spring, formerly of Newmanstown and Schuylkill Haven, died Wednesday at ManorCare Health Services, Spring Township, where she lived since Sept. 20, 1997. Born in Saint Clair, she was a daughter of the late Clyde L. and Marguerite V. Fischer James. She was a 1941 graduate of Reading High School, and a 1944 graduate of Reading Hospital School of Nursing. She had been a registered nurse and supervisor for 30 years at the Hamburg Center and was last employed for five years by Berks Heim, retiring in 1987. She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Reading, and was past president of Professional Women's Association of Schuylkill Haven. Surviving are her husband, Fred G.; a son, George P. Buchas, Ballston Spa, N.Y.; a stepson, Fred G. Eckelmann Jr., Drums; a stepdaughter, Janice C. Hertz, Schuylkill Haven; three sisters, Laura B. Zerby, Claymont, Del., Alberta M. Schock, Whitfield, and Anna D. Connick, Spring Township; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Chapel of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Laureldale Cemetery, Tuckerton. Bean Funeral Homes & Crematory, Sinking Spring, is in charge of arrangements.

Eckenroth, Gladys E. (nee Bowers)

Among the local survivors of Gladys E. (Bowers) Eckenroth, 84, of Cumru Township, who died Feb. 26 in Reading Hospital, where she had been a patient since Feb. 13, is a sister, Mamie I. (Bowers) Brownmiller, Shoemakersville.

Eckenroth, Ida E.

Services were held for Ida E. Eckenroth, 94, formerly of North 12th Street, who died August 5 in Beverly Manor, Exeter Township. Her husband, William W. Eckenroth Sr., died in 1978. Born in Reading, she was employed for 10 years by St. Joseph Medical Center, retiring in 1978 in food service. Surviving are three daughters: Louise A. (Eckenroth) Ziegler, with whom she last resided; Cathrine A. (Eckenroth) Dunlap, also Reading; and Geraldine J. (Eckenroth) Stamm, Mertztown. Other survivors include five sons: Raymond C., Riverview Park; Thomas F., Fleetwood; Kenneth R., Lansdale; William W. Jr., Ventura, Calif.; and Robert L., Robesonia. There are also 13 grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Burial was in Charles Evans Cemetery. The arrangements were handled by the Sanders Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., Reading.

Jacob Eckerman, aged 40 years, died of a complication of diseases at St. Joseph's Hospital about 10 a.m., to-day. Deceased was admitted several days ago. He resides at 941 Chestnut.

Eckert, E. Katie

E. Katie Eckert, 82, formerly of Robesonia, died Saturday evening in the skilled nursing unit of Stone Ridge Village Assisted Living Community, Myerstown, where she had been a patient in the unit for three weeks and a residen tof the community for three years. Her husband, Lawrence A. Eckert, died May 7, 1995. Born in West Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Katie E. (Boyer) Marderness. Eckert was employed 12 years in the dietary department of Wernersville State Hospital, retiring in 1984. She previously had worked as a seamer for Berkshire Knitting Mills, Wyomissing, and in sales at Boscov's West Department Store Sinking Spring. She was a member of St. Daniel's Lutheran Church, Robesonia. Surviving are two daughters, Linda L. (Eckert) Rentschler, Wernersville, and Marjorie R. (Eckert) Fritz, Wyomissing. Other survivors include a sister, Elsie (Marderness) Feeg, Robesonia. There also are five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Daniel's Church. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Spring Township. Lamm & Witman Funeral Home Inc., Wernersville, is in charge of arrangements.

Eckert, Earl W.

Graveside services were held for Earl W. Eckert, 75, of Sand Hill Road, Ruscombmanor Township, who died February 7 while shoveling snow at his residence. He was the husband of Theresa J. (Eckenroth) Eckert. Born in Exeter Township, he had been employed for 20 years as a machine operator by Eastern Machine Products, Reading, retiring in 1992. He was an Army veteran. Eckert is also survived by a daughter, Brenda Lee Eckert, Bernville, and a son, Steven E., West Lawn. Other survivors include a brother and two sisters. Burial was in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maidencreek Township. The Bean Funeral Home Inc., Reading, was in charge of the arrangements.

Ida V. Eckert, 94, of 31 N. Wayne St., Robesonia, died Sunday at 6 a.m. in Reading Hospital where she had been a patient for five days. Born in Robesonia, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Emma (Brossman) Himmelberger. Eckert was employed in the dietary department of Wernersville State Hospital for 16 years, retiring in 1967. She also was employed by the former Berkshire Knitting Mills, Wyomissing, and the former White House Restaurant, now Ozgood's, Robesonia. She was a member of St. Daniel's Lutheran Church, Robesonia. She is survived by two daughters: Corinne J. Eckert, with whom she resided, and Frances L. (Eckert) Yoh, Robesonia. There also are three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Daniel's Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Heidelberg Cemetery, Heidelberg Township. She was born in Mertztown, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Ruppert and was the wife of George Edelman. She had resided in Allentown nearly 50 years. Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Anna, wife of Joseph Hollenbach of 417 N. Lumber St., Allentown; five sisters, Stella Moyer and Larue Grosso, both of Allentown; Meda Stevelton of Topton; Minnie Shafer of Hereford and Helen Gerard of Newark; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services will be held at the Haberle and Barth Funeral Home, 971 Clinton Ave., Irvington, N.J.

Anna L. Edinger, 74, Topton, died of natural causes June 29 at 8:48 a.m. in Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown, where she had been a patient nine days. She was the wife of Norman S. Edinger. Born in Longswamp Township, she was a daughter of the late Irwin and Clara (Heiter) Schlegel. Edinger was employed for many years as a packer by Royal Manufacturing, Alburtis, Lehigh County, until her retirement. She was a member of Grace Evangelical Congregational Church, Kutztown, where she was a youth group leader during the 1960s and 1970s. Edinger is also survived by a son, Robert L., Maxatawny Township. Other survivors include a sister, Florabelle (Schlegel) Kramer, Topton; and four brothers: Wayne Schlegel, Emmaus, Lehigh County; Rayneld Schlegel, Macungie, Lehigh County; Grant Schlegel, Maxatawny Township; and Irwin Schlegel Jr., Kutztown. There are also a grandson and a great-grandson. Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in Ludwick Funeral Homes Inc., Kutztown. Burial will be in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maidencreek Township.

Former Boyertown Woman Dies in Kansas. Mrs. L.E. Edwards, nee Mary L. Gabel, Larned, Kansas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Gabel formerly of this place died Sunday, February 2 and was buried on Wednesday, February 5. Death was caused by pneumonia. Mrs. Edwards was a member of the Boyertown High School class of 1894. She graduated from the Kutztown Normal School in 1895 and from the Pierce School, Philadelphia. Mrs. Edwards taught in the public schools of Bucks County and also in the Atlantic City schools. She is survived by her husband and a daughter. Also her parents and two sisters and three brothers.

A funeral Mass will be held Thursday for Eugene E. Egan, 73, of East Benjamin Franklin Highway, Amity Township, who died February 21 at his home. He was the husband of Margaret M. (Hamilton) Egan. Born in Philadelphia, he operated a manufactured home community in Honey Brook before retiring in 1979. Egan was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church of Birdsboro; Manatawny Association; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 780, both of Pottstown. Surviving with his widow are three sons, John J. of Tampa, Fla., Eugene E. of Douglassville and Patrick C. of King George, Va. Also a sister, and one granddaughter. Friends may call from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the Dengler Funeral Home, 144 N. Spruce St., Birdsboro. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. at Immaculte Conception Church, 640 E. Numerous tributes were received at the funeral of Elizabeth, wife of George W. Ege, which was held from her home, 401 South Fourth Street and attended by many friends and relatives. Services were held at the house and were conducted by Rev. F. K. Huntzinger. The body was attired in a while silk dress and rested in a square-cornered solid oak casket with silver handles, silver trimmings and plate bearing the name and age of deceased. Interment was made at Aulenbach's cemetery. Undertaker Henninger had charge.

She is survived by her husband, mother, and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Annie Weller, of Pottstown; Mrs. Martha Lowrey, of Boyertown; Mrs. Richard Trethewey, of Reading; Mrs. Charles Graeff, of Boyertown; Miss Carrie Conner, of Boyertown; Miss Mary Conner, of Alabama; William Conner, of Idaho; Harry Conner, of Philadelphia; U.B. Conner, of New Jersey; B.B. Conner of Iowa; and Isaac Conner, of Boyertown. Interment was made in Fairview Cemetery. The deceased was aged 42 years and 6 months. There were a large number of pretty floral designs among them a broken wheel from her sisters and brothers, large pillow from her husband, bouquet of roses from her brother, B.B. Ehmer, 79, husband of Mary "Adelaide" (Roberts) Ehmer, of Heather Lane, Gilbertsville, who died June 22 in the Frederick Mennonite Community, Obelisk, where he was a resident for one year. Born in Philadelphia, he was the owner and operator of Chukker Valley Farms Polo Club, Gilbertsville, where he operated public polo games each Sunday. He also worked in sales for Kardon Box Co., Philadelphia, for more than 20 years. Kardon was an Army veteran of World War II, where he attained the rank of sergeant. He was a graduate of North East Catholic High School in Philadelphia. Surviving in addition to his wife of 51 years are two daughters, Debbie A. Philion of Lambertville, N.J., and Dana E. LaChapelle of Wilmette, Ill.; two sons, John W. Ehmer of Havertown, and Robert A. Ehmer of Glastonbury, Conn. Also a sister; two brothers and 10 grandchildren. Born in Kleinsville, he was a son of the late John and Amanda (Wink) Ehrie. He had been employed as a painter and paper hanger. He was a member of the Lutheran congregation of Friedens United Church of Christ, Lenhartsville. Surviving with his widow are a daughter, Elizabeth E., wife of Lee Adam of Lenhartsville, and a granddaughter. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Fritz & Kendall Funeral Home, Kutztown. Viewing will be 7-9 p.m. Monday.

Ehst, Amanda (nee Reppert)

The remains of Mrs. Amanda Ehst, Boyertown, were laid at rest in the old cemetery adjoining the Huff's church on Thursday morning, all the services were held at the house by Rev. W. F. Bond. She was a daughter of Stephen Reppert and wife, Elizabeth (nee Batz), and was born in District township, Berks Co., on June 14, 1845. She was baptized Nov. 17, 1845, by Rev. Carl Herman. The sponsors were Martin Landis and wife, Elizabeth. She was confirmed Oct. 31, 1863, by Rev. Alfred D. Croll in Huff's Church. On May 15, 1869, she was joined in marriage to Ephraim Ehst by Rev. Leonard Groh. Her husband preceded her in death 23 years ago. The union was blessed with two sons, one of whom, John, at home, survives. She passed away suddenly from heart trouble on Saturday morning, January 24, aged 79 years, 7 months and 10 days. She was the last to pass out of her family, and was formerly well known in the neighborhood of Huff's Church. C. F. Moyer and Ambrose Stauffer, of Bechtelsville, were the undertakers in charge.

Ehst, Magdalena

Mrs. Magdalena Ehst, widow of John Ehst, late of New Berlinville, deceased, died at Gabelsville on Sunday. She was sick for years and needed constant watching. She was the daughter of aged Mrs. Gabel who died a few years ago at 101 1/2 years. She was in her 93rd year and leaves two sons, Levi Ehst of New Berlinville, and William Ehst of Eshbach and one sister Leah Funk. She was the sister of aged Henry & Jacob Gabel of Pottstown and Mrs. Susan Landis with whom she lived. The funeral was largely attended. Rev. Mack and Shelly officiated. Interment in Mennonite Cemetery Bally.

Eiceman, 78, Harmony Hill Retirement Home, Tulpehocken Township, who died Dec. 27 in St. Joseph Medical Center, where she had been a patient since Dec. 24. Burial was in St. John's (Hain's) Cemetery, Lower Heidelberg Township. Born in Wernersville, she was a daughter of the late David and Emma (Haldeman) Koch. Until retiring in 1985, she had been employed as a sewing machine operator by Gloray Knitting Mill, Robesonia. Surviving are a daughter, Judy E. (Eiceman) Miller, Bernville; a son, Richard Klinikowski, Reading; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Eichlin, Jane

Eidel, Frank, Jacob J. Reinhard, Oscar Reinhard, and Charles Drey

A disastrous cave-in, in fact the most disastrous for years, occurred Saturday at 11 a.m. in the ore bed operated by Hartzell a. Swartz, on the property of Mrs. Ida Balliet, near Meyersville, about six miles north of this city, causing the death of four men. The dead are Jacob J. and Oscar Reinhard, of Hancock, Frank Eidle, of Topton, and Charles Drey, of Fredericksville, all of Berks county. The ore bed in which the accident occurred is the old Hiram Balliet bed which in the palmy days of ore mining in this county was one of the richest and to-day, many years after its first workers had given it up it is again mined with profit. There were forty-six men employed and at this time a day and a night shift were on. The mine proper is about 150 feet deep and is dug out for several acres. The cave-in, however, did not occur in the old mine but in a branch of it. Along the slope a second slope was dug into a rich vein of ore. This slope extended over a hundred feet and the richest ore was struck. This underground passage naturally was dangerous and the men had been told if they considered it dangerous they not go in. The temporary props were being put in by these men and they were finishing the last part, when from all indications, the ground, softened by the continuous rains, loosened and came down from the sides, breaking the temporary props and imprisoning the men to their death. Had the accident occurred ten minutes later, three more men would have been buried. They had been preparing a lot of things to be taken down and were about ready to go down. Immediately after the cave-in occurred, the proprietors exerted every effort to release the imprisoned miners. They decided upon the likely point they were buried and dug a shaft about twenty-five feet deep and then ran two drifts toward the point. The work naturally consumed a good deal of time and it took until yesterday morning that the bodies of three were found but could not be extricated up to last evening. The news of the disaster spread rapidly and Saturday afternoon and evening large crowds flocked to the place. As the entombed men came from along the East Penn, the trains from their homes brought a number of people from that section and yesterday several thousand people flocked there. From all sections of the county they came with teams. It was, however, not possible for the average visitor to see much as the working place was confined to a small space and the contractors did their utmost to hurry the work. As soon as the bodies of the men were discovered the news spread and it was then said the bodies would not be taken out at once on account of the crowd. Coroner Yost was sent for but when he arrived, the six legs of three men were exposed but it was impossible to extricate them on account of the heavy timbers and ground pinning them down. Last evening the digging of an extra drift was begun and with this it was hoped the bodies would be extricated. Up to last evening, they were, however, not released. Coroner Yost expects to hold the inquest this morning. Of the men killed, Jacob Reinhard is 35 years old and leaves a wife and two children. His brother, Oscar, is 32 and leaves a wife and three children. Frank Eidle is 30 and single. Charles Drey is 22 and single. All are poor.

She was predeceased by her husband, Morris Z. Eisenhard, who died in 1987. Born in Longswamp Township, she was a daughter of the late Herbert P. and Mamie E. (Kuhns) Herman. Daniel A. Eisenhard, 80, Mount Penn, died July 23 at 10:05 a.m. in Lebanon Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he had been a patient for one week. He was the husband of Linda L. (Smithson) Eisenhard. Born in Laureldale, he was a son of the late Morris and Mary (Einsel) Eisenhard. Eisenhard had been last employed in the engineering department of Community General Hospital, Reading, until his retirement. He previously worked as a carpenter for various area contractors and was a ranger at Camp Conrad Weiser. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a prisoner-of-war. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Eisenhard was a graduate of Girard College, Philadelphia. He was a life member of Rainbow Fire Company, Reading, and the Mount Penn Fire Company, where he was past president. Eisenhard is also survived by a daughter, Sharon L. (Eisenhard) Zettlemoyer, Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County; and two sons, Stephen A., Kempton, and John D., Mount Penn. There are also four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Lutz Funeral Home Inc., Mount Penn. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Boyertown.

Elizabeth C. Eisenhard, wife of Robert D. Eisenhard, of Mertztown, died Thursday night at her home in Mertztown at the age of 52 years, 2 months and 16 days, from diabetes and gangerine. She was the daughter of Abraham and Eliza (nee Fegley) Dierolf. The funeral will be held Thursday, January 24, at 2 p.m. from her late home in Mertztown, with Rev. W. S. Dry, of Kutztown, officiating, and with continued services in St. Paul's church of which she was a faithful member. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining. Besides her husband, Mrs. Eisenhard is survived by these children: Florence, Lillian and Gertrude Eisenhard, at home; Mrs. Charles Holland, Miss Esther Eisenhard, Mrs. Helen Walck, John Eisenhard, Alburtis; Mrs. Curtis Miller, Clarence Eisenhard, both of Mertztown. There are nineteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Brothers and sisters are Mrs. Kate Stauffer, Wescosville; George Dierolf, Pottstown; David Dierolf, Temple.

Mrs. Emma L. (Fox) Eisenhard, 74, of East Texas, widow of William V. Eisenhard, died yesterday morning in the Reinmiller Nursing Home, Emmaus. Born in Hereford Township, Berks County, a daughter of the late Henry J. and Katie (DeLong) Fox, she resided in Macungie until moving to East Texas 10 years ago. She was a member of Zionsville United Church of Christ. Surviving are five sons, Howard of Fogelsville, John of Emmaus R. 1, Carl of Kankakee, Ill., and George and Donald, both of Macungie; four daughters, Mrs. Catherine Lobach, with whom she resided; Doris, wife of Roy Fegeley of Macungie; Ellen, wife of Russell Butz, and Jean, wife of Arthur Werst, both of East Texas; a brother, Samuel of Huffs Church; 29 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Schmoyer Funeral Home, Breinigsville. Viewing will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Eisenhard, Katie (nee Hetrick)

Mrs. Katie Eisenhard, 63, died at 9 a.m. yesterday at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Derr, Mertztown. Born in Rockhill, Bucks county, she was a daughter of the late William and Amanda Hersh Hetrick. Mrs. Eisenhard had been in ill health for the past year during which she was hospitalized for two months. She had been bedfast at her home for six weeks. Mrs. Eisenhard was a member of the Lutheran wing of Ziegels church, and was a member of the home department of its Sunday school. She also held membership in the Ladies Aid society of the Mertztown Lutheran church. Her survivors include a son Earl of Molltown and a daughter, Annie Derr, with whom she resided. Thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.

Oscar H.B. Eisenhard, in the employ of Stettler & Lichtenwalner, mine operators, near Breinigsville, who died Thursday, April 4, of heart failure, was aged 45 years, 9 months and 27 days. He worked as late as Tuesday, April 2, when the first attack came suddenly and he sank down among his companions. He was removed to his home about a mile and a half north of Shamrock, where he died. He was a son of Thomas E. Eisenhard and wife Susannah (nee Yehl), and was born June 7, 1861, in North Whitehall, Lehigh county. His widow, one son and one daughter, two brothers and one sister survive. Interment was made at Longswamp Church Tuesday, April 9, Rev. Wm. F. Bond officiating. Israel Fegely, Samuel Geist, Jacob Hilbert and Howard Miller were the bearers.

After an illness of several years, Robert D. Eisenhard, 74, died yesterday at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mengel of 708 Haas St., Topton. Born in Upper Macungie township, the son of the late John and Sarah, nee Diehl, Eisenhard, he was a member of the Mertztown Lutheran church, Mertztown. His wife, Elizabeth, nee Gierols, died in 1929. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. from his late home 708 Haas St., Topton, followed by services in the Mertztown Lutheran church at 2 o'clock with Rev. Luther Schlenker of Kutztown officiating. Burial will be made in the adjoining cemetery.

Eisenhard, Uriah L.

Uriah L. Eisenhard died at his residence, South Richmond street, Fleetwood, aged 65 years and 16 days. His wife preceded him in death about five years ago. He is survived by a brother, Charles, of Boyertown, and three sisters, Mrs. C. D. Butz, Mrs. M. O. Freymann and Mrs. Millie Clewell, all of Allentown. He was a member of the Fleetwood Borough Council. Funeral on Monday, February 19, at 2 p.m. All services at the house. Interment in St. Paul's Cemetery. Rev. W. H. Kline, of Topton, will officiate. Eisenhart, Pearl D. (nee Angstadt)

Pearl D Eisenhart, 96, formerly of Topton died Dec 20 at 2:30 A.M. in the Lutheran Home at Topton, where she had resided since May 30, 2003.

Born in Topton, she was a daughter of the late Herbert W. and Eva V. (Barto) Angstadt.

Eisenhart was employed for 16 years as a packer by Royal manufacturing, Alburtis, Lehigh County.

Surviving are a daughter, Doris L (Eisenhart) Kemp, Kutztown; and four sons; Dale L and Larry H., both of Topton; Ronald K., Placitas, N.M.; and Kenneth H., Fleetwood.

Other survivors include 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

Memorial services will be Jan. 4 at 11 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will be private. Ludwick Funeral Home Inc., Topton, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary E. Eisenhower, 88, formerly of Windsor Street and the Providence House, Court Street, died Sept. 29 in the Lutheran Home at Topton, where she had resided since May. Her husband, Harry J. Eisenhower, died Sept. 27, 1978. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Solomon H. and Ella (Matz) Tobias. Eisenhower was employed for 10 years as a bundler by Dolfin Swimwear Corp., Shillington, retiring in 1985. She was a member of Calvary Reformed United Church of Christ, Reading. Eisenhower was a 1933 graduate of Reading High School. Surviving are two sons, Robert W., Alsace Township, and Richard L., Port Orchard, Wash.; and a daughter, Rosanne (Eisenhower) Dell, Blandon. Other survivors include seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Glenn J. Eisenhower, in 1995. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reiffton. Eline, Raymond J.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Raymond J. Eline, 84, of Water Street, Boyertown, who died January 17 in Pennsburg Manor, Pennsburg, Montgomery County, where he had been a patient. His wife, Mildred V. (Sanders) Eline, died in 1999. Born in Barto, he had been employed for more than 35 years at Beckerman's Shoe Factory, Boyertown, retiring as a foreman. He was later employed for 15 years as a machine operator by Bally Block Co., Bally, before retiring. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Eline is survived by a daughter, Carol E. (Eline) Jacob, Bally. Other survivors include a brother, Leroy, Pottstown, and five sisters: Mary C. (Eline) Feather, New Berlinville; Dorothy (Eline) Kemp and Victoria (Eline) Benfield, both of Barto; Arlene (Eline) Wolf, Bechtelsville; and Margaret (Eline) Gehris, Red Hill, Montgomery County. There are also two grandchildren, one stepgranddaughter and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Carl D. Burial was in Hill Church Cemetery, Pike Township. The Linwood W. Ellinwood, Roger Allen

Services were held for Roger Allen Ellinwood, 59, of South Baumstown Road, Exeter, husband of Valerie R. (Zdradzinski) Ellinwood, who died November 13 at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center. Born in Lowell, Mass., he worked as the dietary head chef for Reading Hospital and Medical Center for 20 years, last working in August. He served in the Navy for 21 years and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. In additiion to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Amy A. Roseboom of Westford, N.Y., Alison L. Campbell of Exeter and Danielle L. Woodring of Annapolis, Md. Also a brother; a sister and 11 grandchildren. The Dengler Funeral Home, Birdsboro, handled the arrangements.

Elliott Sr., David A.

Services were held in the Henninger Funeral Home, Reading, for David A. Elliott Sr., 49, of Elm Street, Leesport, who died of natural causes April 24 in the emergency room of St. Joseph Medical Center. Burial was private. Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Robert G. and Gloria Mae (Edwards) Elliott. He was employed for 16 years in construction by Union 471, Blandon, until becoming ill in January 2002. Elliott Jr., of Elm Street, Leesport, and Renee Lynne Archival, of Temple, who was stillborn Aug. 5 in Reading Hospital. Also surviving are his paternal grandmother, Michele L. Death yesterday morning claimed Robert Eltz, son of Claude and Ferna (nee Angstadt) Eltz, in the Phoenixville hospital. The boy was aged 6 years, 1 month and 5 days. He lived with his parents at Topton. Besides his parents, he is survived by one brother, Wayne, and one sister, Trene. His paternal grandparents and his maternal grandmother also survive. Funeral services will be held from the home of his parents on Weiss street, Topton, on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock daylight saving time. Continued services will be conducted in St. Peter's Reformed church, Topton., by Rev. Dr. George B. Smith. Interment will be made in the Union cemetery, Topton.

Ely, Sarah J.F. (nee Dankel)

Death early yesterday called Sarah J. F., nee Dankel, widow of Amandus H. Ely, of near Breinigsville, the end coming at 2.15 o'clock at the Allentown hospital, where she had been admitted three weeks ago for surgical treatment. Mrs. Ely, who was in her 58th year, had been ill for the past three months. She was born in Longswamp township, a daughter of Henry and Sarah, nee Oswald, Dankel. Her husband preceded her in death by six years, having been fatally injured in a grade crossing accident at Trexlertown. Mrs. Ely was a devoted member of the Reformed congregation of Ziegel's church, and was dearly loved and esteemed by all who knew her. She is survived by two sons, Nevin J. H. Ely, Trexlertown, and Raymond G. Ely, Breinigsville Route 1, together with a grandchild, a sister, Mrs. Harry Meitzler, Alburtis, and two brothers, Charles Dankel, Allentown, and Alfred Dankel, Topton. Funeral services will be held at her late home on Tuesday at 1.30 p.m., daylight saving time, followed by continued services in Ziegel's church, Rev. William Meckstroh officiating. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Private services and burial were arranged by the Kirkhoff Funeral Home, Bernville, for Thomas G. Ely, 71, who died of natural causes Feb. 7 in his Jefferson Place, Jefferson Township residence. He was the husband of Andrea M. (Wentz) Ely. Born in Shillington, he was a son of the late Thomas G. Sr. and Ruth (Schaeffer) Ely. Until retiring as production manager in 1995, he was employed by Crompton and Knowles, Gilbraltar. He was a Korean War Marine Corps veteran. Funeral services were held for Lillian Dolores Emery, 72, of the Berkshire Center in Exeter, formerly of Birdsboro, who died June 11 in Reading Hospital and Medical Center. She was born in Birdsboro. For 20 years, she worked as a secretary for the Borough of Birdsboro, retiring in 1992. A 1948 graduate of the former Birdsboro High School, she also graduated from the McCann School of Business in Reading in 1950. She was a member of Calvary Evangelical Congregational Church in Birdsboro. Surviving is a brother, Robert L. Emery of Phoenix, Ariz.; and two sisters, Margaret Yoder of Reading and Janet L. Emery, Valentine B.

Death of Squire Emery. Valentine B. Emery, a respected citizen, residing on Chestnut Street, Boyertown, who had bee afflicted with kidney trouble for some time, on Wednesday of last week went to the German Hospital, Philadelphia, and was advised to undergo an operation for gravel in the bladder. He returned the same day and on Monday he left home and went direct to the hospital. On Wednesday at 2 o'clock, p.m. the operation was performed, and yesterday morning shortly after on o'clock, he died in the hospital. Undertaker Brown brought the corpse here last evening on the 5:45 train. Squire Emery as he was familiar known, was born in Montgomery County, near Neifer's store. In 1871 he married Miss Clara Bickel, daughter of our late townsman, Ben Bickel. In 1862 Mr. Emery was drafted for 9 months service in the civil war, and became 1st Lieutenant of Co. H., 175th Regiment, PA Infantry and served his full term. He was then in the cigar business at Gilbertstown and served a term as Justice of the peace. He also carried on the mercantile business at Milltown, near East Greenville, for three years. Eleven years ago he moved to Boyertown and was in the cattle powder business, traveling salesman for the Boyertown Burial Casket Company and some years ago elected Justice of the Peace but declined to serve. His last employment was clerk and salesman in George K. MOORE"s liquor store. He was in his 65th year. Leaves a widow but no children. Funeral on Thursday, at 10:30 a.m. Interment in Union Cemetery.

Emes, Gerald F., 55, husband of Adeline(Moser) Emes of Stowe, died yesterday morning in Pottstown Hospital where he had been a patient the past five weeks. A moulder by trade, he had been employed at the Birdsboro Casting Company and the past six yeas had worked at the Pottstown Machine company. He retired the past December because of failing health. Mr. Emes was born in Pottstown, a son of Frand and Edith(Ludwig ( Emes. he was a member of Aerie 626, Fraternal Order of Eagles; Nest 11393, Order of Owls, and the West End Fire company. Surviving are his wife, his parents and four daughters; Edith, wife of Peter Grimm; Ellen, wife of Joseph Slavek; Geraldine, wife of Joseph Surman; and Janet, wife of Elmer Wisler. Also surviving are two brothers, Millard F. Emes and Francis Emes; one sister, Eleanor, wife of George Reed or Orwigsburg and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2989 Beech Street. Interment will be made in East Nantmeal Baptist Cemetery.

Born in Lindon, La., she graduated from Southwestern Louisiana University in 1940. She taught high school in the Methacton School District until she retired in 1980. Endy was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Niantic. She was also a member of the Pennsylvania State Employees Retirement Association, the American Diabetes Association and the Order of the Eastern Star in Louisiana. In addition to her husband of 57 years, she is survived by a son, William L. Endy of Falls Church, Va.; a daughter, Ellen E. Roberts of Barto, Also a sister and three grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers. Endy, Mrs. Daniel

Mrs. Daniel Endy, of Phila., formerly of this place, died at the residence of one of her daughters, aged 84 years. Her remains were brought here on the 10 o'clock train on Wednesday and proceeded to the Lutheran Church, where the funeral sermon was preached by Rev. A. M. Weber. Her husband died a number of years ago. Seven children survive, among them Gilbert Endy residing near here. George Gilbert is a brother. Interment was made in Fairview Cemetery. Floral tributes consisted of a pillow of natural flowers bearing the word "Mother"; wreath and pedestals of natural flowers, an open book with, "Called Home". The pall bearers were E. Gabel, Jarius Stauffer, George Schoenly, and John Moyer.

Services were held for Emanuel J. Endy, 62, of Caravelle Lane, Exeter Township, who died December 28 in Reading Hospital, where he had been a patient. Born in Reading, Endy had been employed for 20 years as a truck driver by A.T.V. Bakery, Reading, retiring in 1995. He was a 1958 graduate of Reading High School. Endy was a life member of the East Ends Athletic Association, Reading. He resided with Judith P. (Engle) Hunsinger, is survived by a son, Christopher J., Dallas, Texas; and two daughters, Loreal M. Endy, Reading, and Nicole M. Endy, Los Almitos, Calif. Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery, Laureldale. The Lutz Funeral Home Inc., Mount Penn, handled the arrangements.

Gilbert ENDY, of Pottstown, died aged 70 years. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, of Boyertown and a native of this place. The deceased is survived by his widow, Emma, and the following children: William L. at home; Daniel G. Among the local survivors of John M. Endy, formerly of Reading, who died Dec. 6 in ManorCare Health Services, West Reading, is a half sister, Sandra A. (George) Hardinger, Fleetwood.

Mrs. Sarah Endy, widow of Samuel Endy, of Oley, died of pneumonia after an illness of five days. Several days ago the deceased received a pension of $12 a month and $2,146 back pension. Arlene E. Engel, 70, of Seton Manor Nursing Home, Orwigsburg, formerly of Wyndcliffe Apartments, Hamburg, died Sunday afternoon at Pottsville Hospital, where he had been a patient since May 1. Born in Altoona, she was a daughter of the late John E. and Minnie B. Gates Fisher. She was a 1947 graduate of Altoona High School. She was employed for 18 years as nurse's aide at the Hamburg Center, retiring in 1990. She was a member of Hamburg Bible Church. Surviving are two sons, James E., Auburn, and Stephen P., Pleasantville, Ohio; four sisters, Yuveta L. Orischak, Reading, and Barbara J. Nichols, Cincinnati, Ohio, June C. Lightner, Hermitage, and Lilly M. Heffner, Tilden Township; four brothers, Charles W. Fisher, Bedford, E. Wayne Fisher, Kings Cross, Texas, John E. Fisher Jr., Altoona, and Dennis B. Fisher, Jacksonville, N..C.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hamburg Bible Church. Interment will be in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maidencreek Township. Burkey & Driscoll Funeral Home, Hamburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Engel, Kathryn E.

Services will be held Thursday for Kathryn E. Engel, 93, formerly of Boyertown, who died July 14 in ManorCare Health Services in Pottstown. Born in the village of Pleasantville in Oley Township, she was a hosiery examiner at the former Great American Knitting Mill of Bally, retiring in 1983. She was a member of Good Shepherd United Church of Christ in Boyertown. She was also a member of the Pottstown Orioles, the Boyertown Orioles, the Keystone Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary in Boyertown and the Liberty Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary of New Berlinville. Surviving are two nieces and one nephew. She was preceded in death by a sister. Calling hours will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday in the Linwood W. Ott Funeral Home, 111 N. Reading Ave., Boyertown. Services will be at 11 a.m. with the Rev. William E. Harner Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Boyertown.

Engle, Elmer

Former Reading Man Dies at New Castle. Elmer Engle, of New Castle, Pa., aged 30 years, died on Sunday from appendicitis after an illness of two weeks. Mr. Engle was a linotype operator on the New Castle News and was formerly employed in this city. Besides his widow, Lillian (nee Schmehl), formerly of this city, a daughter, Margaret, also survives. He was a member of a local P.O.S. of A. camp, Washington Union and the New Castle Typographical Union.

Engle, Esther S.

Engle, George Kroll

George Kroll Engle, well known and respected resident of Hancock for the past twenty years, died at his home Saturday afternoon, after a short illness. Death came as a result of complications. He was aged 39 years, two months and 18 days. Deceased was the son of Frank and Amelia, nee Kroll, Engle and was born in Lebanon county. After spending the major portion of his youth at that place, Mr. Engle and his parents moved to Hancock, at which place they have since resided. Prior to this death, he had been in the employ of the Topton Foundry, where he established himself highly in the minds of all the people who were in contact with him. He was also an active member of the Lutheran congregation of the Long Swamp church. He is survived by his wife, Elsie, nee Grasely, Engle and one daughter, Betty and two sons, Ernest and George. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Simon, Brickersville; Charles and Frank, Myerstown; Adam, Hancock; William, West Leesport; Mrs. Rebecca Weland, Mrs. Harry Weightman, Mrs. Sallie Beadencup, all of Schaefertown; Mrs. George Youse, Reading and Mrs. Monroe Wolf, Mertztown. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 25, at 1:30 o'clock, from his late home in Hancock, followed by further services in the Long Swamp church. Rev. William F. Bond of Shamrock will officiate. Burial will be made in the adjoining cemetery.

Services were held in the Leibensperger Funeral Home, Hamburg, for George W. Engle, of South Fourth Street, Hamburg, who died July 22 in St. Joseph Medical Center, where he had been a patient since July 14. He was taken to the hospital from Spruce Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, West Reading, where he had resided since February. Burial was in Bern Cemetery, Bern Township. He was the husband of Charlotte M. (Dieter) Williams. Born in Bern Township, he was a son of the late William K. Engle and Mary A. (Straus) Engle Weller. Until 1996, he was employed as a security guard by the Pennsylvania Steel Foundry and Machine Co., Hamburg. He was previously employed as a fire truck driver by the city of Reading for 20 years, until 1973. Surviving are two sons, Douglas R. Wililams and Lynton W. Williams, both of Hamburg; and a daughter, Marilyn M. (Williams) Jacobs, Des Moines, Iowa. There are also seven grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Richard J. Williams, who died in 1997.

Margaret M. Engle, 86, formerly of Womelsdorf, died May 8 at 10:35 a.m. in Garden Spot Village, New Holland, where she had been a resident for one year. Her husband, Lloyd E. Engle, died Feb. 5, 2004. Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late Franklin D. and Emma (Bickel) Foltz. Engle had been employed for 16 years as a licensed practical nurse by Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon. She was a member of St. Daniel's Lutheran Church, Robesonia. Engle was a former church organist at Altalaha Lutheran Church and Trinity United Church of Christ, both in Rehrersburg, and was a member of the Tulpehocken Sanger Choir. She is survived by a son, Edwin L., Denver, Lancaster County, and a daughter, Helen E. (Engle) Halligan, Rochester, N.Y. There are also four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Hill Funeral Home, Rehrersburg. Burial will be in Trinity UCC Cemetery, Rehrersburg.

Among the local survivors of Anna M. (Englehart) Englehart, 87, formerly of Reading, who died June 9 in Kutztown Manor, where she had resided since October, is a son, Russell C. Englehart, Hamburg.

Englehart, Nora M.

Nora M., wife of Adam Englehart, died yesterday at her home, 112 Douglass St., aged 66 years. She was a native of this city, a daughter of the late John and Mary S. Eavling, and was a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving besides her husband are three children, Mildred, Ruth and Judson, all of this city, and two grandchildren. Funeral on Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Miller Funeral Home, where services will be conducted by the Rev. Joseph R. Wood.

Englehart, Rebecca

Mrs. Rebecca Englehart, of Reading, died at the residence of her son, Jeremiah, about a mile from Stony Creek, the result of a nail in her shoe. After walking a distance, she discovered that her foot was bleeding. In a few days, the contusion developed into blood poison and she suffered intense agony for several weeks. Her body will be prepared in the home of her son, Jeremiah.

Engler, Agnes V. (nee Mabry)

Mrs. Agnes V. Engler, widow of Erwin V. Engler, died of a heart condition yesterday morning at her home, 121 1st Ave., West Catasauqua. Mrs. Engler, in ill health for about the past three months, would have marked her 78th birthday anniversary next Jan. 10. A native of Longswamp township, Berks county, she was born Jan. 10, 1863, the daughter of the late Joseph and Polly, nee Deibert, Mabry. However, she resided in West Catasauqua the greater part of her life. Mrs. Engler was a member of St. John's Reformed church, Mickleys, and of the Mite society of the church; Home Dept. of the West Catasauqua Union Sunday school; the P.O.A. of Catasauqua. Surviving are one daughter, Helen A., wife of Mahlon Nothstein, of the West Catasauqua address, and two grandchildren. Her parents, husband, one daughter, Naomi, and one son, Joseph, preceded her in death. The Rev. Richard Keen of Coplay will officiate at funeral services to be held from the late residence on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be made in Mickleys cemetery.

Born in Birdsboro, she was a supervisor at Gotschel Poultry Factory in Birdsboro for eight years. Surviving are three sons, Randy L. Derr of Kutztown, Mark D. Derr of Allentown, Jay A. Derr of Wellington, Texas; a daughter, Buffy J. Shadler of Oley. Also a brother, Raymond E. Emery of Birdsboro; one sister, Joy L. Alderfer of Pottstown; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The Dengler Funeral Home, Birdsboro, was in charge of the arrangements.

Epler, Carolina (nee Baer)

Carolina (nee Baer) Epler, widow of Samuel Epler, died Tuesday evening at her home in Mertztown of a complication of ills incident to old age. She was in her 85th year. She was born in Upper Macungie township. Her husband died 17 years ago. Two children preceded her in death, but there survive four grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Mary Cameron, resides in Emaus. The funeral will be held Saturday at 1.30 o'clock from her late residence in Mertztown. Continued services and burial will be made at the St. Paul's Union church, Mertztown.

Graveside services were held for Hazel R. Epler, 90, of Walnuttown Road, Ruscombmanor Township, who died August 23 in her residence. She was the wife of Nelson M. Epler. Born in Chester County, she and her husband were co-owners of Epler's Grove, Ruscombmanor Township, from 1959 until 1988. They previously co-owned Epler's Seafood Store, Reading, for 12 years. She was a member of Alsace Lutheran Church, Hyde Park. Epler is also survived by a daughter, Patricia Ann (Epler) Miller, Fleetwood. Burial was in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reiffton. The Mae A. Stump Funeral Home Inc., Fleetwood, was in charge of the arrangements.

Eppihimer, Millard F.

Millard Filmore Eppihimer, 80, died May 27 at 5:15 a.m. in his Colebrookdale Township residence. He was the husband of Dorothea G. (Miller) Eppihimer. Born in Birdsboro, he was a son of the late William S. Eppihimer and Sarah Ruth (Henry) Romig. Eppihimer had been last employed as a truck driver by James D. Morrissey, Phoenixville, Chester County, during the 1980s. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Boyertown. Eppihimer was a Navy veteran of World War II. He is also survived by two daughters, Deborah Y. (Eppihimer) Eddy, Pottstown, and Cynthia J. (Eppihimer) Eshbach, Boyertown; and three sons: Earl A., Pottstown; Glenn W., Shoemakersville; and Lee E., St. Lawrence. Other survivors include a sister, Pauline (Eppihimer) Daugherty, Okolona, Ky. There are also nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in Dengler Funeral Home Inc., Birdsboro. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Boyertown.

Eppler, Henry; Charles W. Oswald; Sassaman Hilbert; and Charles Walbert

Shortly before 7 o'clock on Monday morning while a number of the employees of the Trexler Cooperage Company, at Mertztown, on the East Penn railroad, were standing in front of the boiler warming themselves, the boiler exploded, and killed three men instantly, injuring another so that he died in a short time, and severely wounding several others. The dead are Charles W. Oswald, aged 38 years, and leaving a wife and children; Sassaman Hilbert, aged 26 years, leaving a wife, but no children; Henry Eppler, aged 18 years, unmarried, and Charles Walbert, aged 37 years, leaving a wife, but no children. The seriously injured are James Bauscher, aged 45 years, who will probably die; Samuel Eppler, arm broken and injured internally, and William Bortz, badly scalded. Several others were slightly hurt. The boiler was torn in two parts, one section taking a direct course through the building and landing 600 feet from the Works. The other section was hurled nearly as great a distance. That part of the building in which the boiler was located was shattered. The Works had forty hands in employ, only a few of whom, however, were in the building when the explosion occurred. Some contend that the boiler was old and rotten, while the proprietors of the works assert that the injector refused to work, and that when the water got too low the boiler exploded. The engineer was at work at the injector at the time, and although knocked down, he was not seriously injured. An inquest was held in the evening on the bodies of the dead. The testimony showed that the steam gauge registered sixty pounds when the boiler went off, and that shortly before that the injector, which pumps water into the boiler, had refused to work. In addition, one witness, an engineer at the factory, testified that the boiler was leaking, while another stated under oath that the engineer, Samuel Epler, who was injured, was engaged on Sunday in repairing the boilers. The inquest was then adjourned until yesterday for securing an expert to examine the boiler. Two of the injured will die.

Anson Epting, 85, of Stevens, died Dec. 23, 2005, in Ephrata Manor following a short illness. Born May 8, 1920, in Upper Tulpehocken Township, a son of Wallace M. and Sallie M. (Moyer) Epting, he was the husband of Mildred S. (Martin) Epting for 56 years. A member of Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, he graduated in 1938 from Schaefferstown High School and Temple University Electronics School, Allentown. He and his wife owned and operated Epting's Shopping Center, Reamstown, where he also repaired televisions. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Ephrata Lodge No. 665 Free & Accepted Masons, Rajah Shrine Club, Ephrata American Legion, and Ephrata, Adamstown and Reinholds VFWs. Anson also loved traveling, fishing and hunting. Also surviving are a daughter Dawn (Rodney) Kiscadden, Lebanon; sons Elvin (Lynne Bridgeman), Roanoke, Va.; and Terry (Sandy Murphy), Stevens; grandchildren Scott Flickinger and Nichole Neuin; and four great-grandchildren. Born in Perry Township, he was a son of the late Earl J. and Mary C. (Yeager) Epting. Epting was a Navy veteran of World War II. He is also survived by two sons, Thomas, Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, and David, Mohrsville. Other survivors include two sisters, Marie (Epting) Snyder, Temple, and Ruth (Epting) Rausch, Hamburg; and two brothers, Arlan L., Wescosville, Lehigh County, and Earl G., Auburn, Schuylkill County. Mrs. Iva H. Epting, wife of George F. Epting, of near Topton, died at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's hospital, Reading, in her 40th year. Mrs. Epting was born in Longswamp township, Berks county, a daughter of Daniel and Hettie (Warmkessel) Moyer. She was employed at the east Penn Weaving Co., Topton, and was a member of the Lutheran congregation of St. Paul's church, Mertztown, the Willing Workers of the same church and the Sunday school of St. Peter's Reformed church, Topton. Besides her husband there survive one daughter, Mrs. Harold Fenstermacher, Topton; one granddaughter, Sandra Ann Fenstermacher, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Morris Pilgert, Mrs. Harry Reppert, Clarence Moyer, all of Mertztown R.D.; Mrs. Howard Odenweiller, Meda Moyer, both of Macungie R.D., and Floyd Moyer, Fogelsville. Private services will be held at the late home, near Topton, Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., followed by public services in St. Paul's church, Mertztown. Interment will be made in the adjoining cemetery.

Luther T. Epting of 50 E. Washington St., Topton, died yesterday in the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hertzog of Mertztown R. 1. He was 51. Born in Tilden Township, Berks County, he was a son of J. Edwin Epting of Mertztown and the late Cora (Savage) Epting. He was an employe of the Caloric Appliance Corp., Topton. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Topton. He was an active member and trunk foreman of the Topton Fire Co. Surviving in addition to his father and his daughter Betty, at whose home he died, are his widow, Elsie L. (Younger) Epting, and three other daughters, Doris, wife of Laverne Stevens of Topton; Patricia, wife of Carlton Andrews of Westville, N.J., and Kay, at home; two sons, Leonard and Barry, both at home; six brothers, George and Norman, both of Topton; John, Harold and Marvin, all of Kutztown, and James of Hemet, Calif.; three sisters, Eva of Mertztown R. 1; Sallie, wife of Earl P. Adams of Fleetwood, and Harvene, wife of John G. Heffner, of Lyons, and seven grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Trinity Church. Viewing will be 7-8:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Earl A. Epting, Jacob Franklin

Jacob Franklin Epting, son of the late Moses and Lydia (Hollenbach) Epting, born April 13, 1867 U. Tulpehocken Twp., Berks Co.; was baptized Oct. 13, 1867 by Rev. B. D. Zweizig and was confirmed March 26, 1881, by Rev. D. D. Trexler in Friedens Church, Shartlesville. He was married to Fietta M. Lesher, Dec. 28, 1889 by Rev. D. D. Trexler. This union was blessed with 8 children. He died Saturday, Sept. 17, 1932 in Reading, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kunkelman, aged 65 years, 5 months and 4 days and is survived by 4 daughters, 2 sons, 9 grand and 1 great grandchildren, also 1 sister and 2 brothers. He was buried Sept. 22, 1932 with services in the home and Friedens Church, Shartlesville and burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Erb, Earl L.

Erb, Earl L., born Sept. 16, 1893 died October 24, 1950 at the age of 57 years, 1 month, and 8 days. Bro. Erb was a Veteran of World War I. He served overseas with the 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division. We owe a great deal to the men who served so well for us during those bitter days of conflict. He died in the Veterans Administration Hospital at Aspinwall, Pa. Public services were held Saturday Oct. 28 in the Kindt Memorial Home, Shillington, Pa. American Legion Members also had a part in the Funeral Service. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Bessie Gable and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Erb was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Emma, nee Smith, Oswald, and is survived by four children, Mrs. Morris Arndt, Lenhartsville; Mrs. Raymond Millhouse, Emaus; Irene and Charles Erb, at home; by eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two sisters and a brother, Mrs. Ella Burley, Allentown; Mrs. Eliza Stein, Alburtis and Harvey Oswald, Allentown. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 1.30 o'clock, with continued services in St. Paul's church, Mertztown and interment in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. W. S. Dry will officiate.

Mrs. Sarah E. Erb, wife of John H. Erb, and for many years a resident of Emaus, died at her late home, 25 S. 5th St., Emaus, at 2.30 p.m. yesterday following a lengthy illness. She was in her 69th year. A native of Hereford township, Berks county, Mrs. Erb was the daughter of the late Henry and Susanna (nee Faust) Traub. She was a member of the Reformed congregation of St. Peter�s church, Upper Milford township. Erb of Allentown R. 3; 23 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1.30 p.m. at her late home, 25 S. 5th St., Emaus, with regular services in St. Peter�s church, Upper Milford township. Erdman, Julia V.

Mrs. Julia V. Erdman, widow of Oswin H. Erdman, died Wednesday at the residence of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin B. Benner, Sumneytown, in her 78th years. Mrs. Erdman was born in Longswamp township, Berks county, a daughter of the late Charles and Lucretia (Albright) Wickert. She was a member of Trinity Reformed church, Spinnerstown. Surviving are a daughter, Meda, wife of E. B. Benner, with whom she lived; three grandchildren and one brother, Oscar A. Wickert of Rising City, Neb. Short services will be held at her late home, Sumneytown, Sunday at 1 p.m. Regular services will follow at 2 p.m. in Trinity church, Spinnerstown. Interment will be made in the adjoining cemetery. The Reverends W. F. Rupp and E. L. Angstadt will officiate.

Erisman, Abraham L.

Rev. Abraham L. Erisman, a well-known United Evangelical minister, died at his home at Kutztown last Wednesday after a lengthy illness from typhoid fever, contracted at the Perkasie camp meeting. He was born at Millersville, Lancaster county. He spent the first year of his ministry at Jacksonville, Fla., and since then has occupied the pastorates of various East Pennsylvania charges. He was 35 years of age, and at the time of his death, was pastor of the congregations at Kutztown, Topton, Virginville and Shamrock.

Erlandson, Laura K.

Private burial was held for Laura K. Erlandson, 22, formerly of Boyertown, who died July 1 in her Limerick home. She was born in Reading to Robert A. Erlandson, husband of Marie T. (McGowan) Erlandson, both of Boyertown and Maureen (Barrett) Erlandson of Limerick. A 1998 graduate of Boyertown Area High School, she was attending Drexel University until her recent illness. She attended New Hanover United Methodist Church in Gilbertsville. While attending Drexel, she was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority. In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Jason B. Erlandson of Morgantown, W. Va.; her maternal grandmother, Virginia A. (Young) Barrett of Westford, Mass., and her paternal grandparents, Robert W. and Shirley N. (Josephson) Erlandson. Ermentrout, Donald C.

Donald Collier Ermentrout, 99, formerly of Shillington, died July 26 at 2:50 a.m. in the Lutheran Home at Topton, where he had resided since Jan. 16, 2004. He was the husband of Margaret Elaine (Stickell) Ermentrout, a resident at Phoebe Berks Village, Wernersville. Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Henry R. and Emma May (Maurer) Ermentrout. Ermentrout was employed for 14 years as the business manager by the Phoenixville School District, retiring in July 1976. He was a 1924 graduate of Wyomissing High School and was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Ermentrout was a life member of the Stonersville Fire Company. He was a past lodge council chapter consistory of the ASSR, Valley of Reading. Ermentrout is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Atonement Lutheran Church, Wyomissing. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium. Edward J. Services were held in the Leibensperger Funeral Home, Centerport, for Lottie M. Ernst, who died Feb. 23 in her Indian Manor Drive, Ontelaunee Township residence. Burial was in Epler's Cemetery, Bern Township. She was predeceased by her husband, Warren L. Ernst, who died Jan. 29, 1959. Born in Bern Township, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Manie (Shalter) Filbert. She was a 60-year member and past grand of the Lady Colfax Rebekah Lodge 182, Leesport. Surviving is a son, Warren I. Ernst, with whom she last resided.

Ertel, Barbara Anna

The funeral of Barbara Anna, aged 15, daughter of Jacob and Barbara ERTEL, took place from the residence of her parents, 610 North 11th at 8:30 a.m. Services were conducted at St. Paul's Catholic Church by Rev. Father BORNEMANN. The remains were attired in a white satin dress, covered with an eiderdown blanket and reposed in a white embossed plush covered casket, mounted with heavy silver trimmings and plate. The casket was edged with smilax, roses and carnations, the compliments of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob MURINGER. The employees of Nolde & Horst, where the deceased was employed, viewed the remains in a body.

The bearers were: George ERTEL, Thomas ERTEL, Marcks EINSEMAUND, John REINWALD, William REINWALD and Jacob HEINWALD. There were a number of out-of-town relatives present, among them Mr. and Mrs. Frank GRIMM of Phila. Ertel, George J.

George J. Ertel, 91, Reading, died July 7 at 3:25 p.m. in St. Joseph Medical Center, where he had been a patient since June 27. He was the husband of Jane G. (Moyer) Ertel. Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Leo S. and Sallie V. (Weaver) Ertel. Ertel had been employed as a brakesman and conductor by Reading Railroad, retiring in 1978. He was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Reading. Ertel was a 1933 graduate of Reading High School. He was a life member of: the Stony Creek Athletic Club; Ivy Leaf Association; Excelsior Beneficial Association; Hampden Fire Company; Veteran Fireman's Association; the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen; and the Veteran Railroad Association. Ertel is also survived by a daughter, Jacquelyn L. (Ertel) Cress, Reading. Other survivors include a brother, Donald A., Shillington. There are also three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's RC Church. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Laureldale. Ervin, Anna

Services were held for Anna Ervin, 93, of Quakertown and the Hazelton area, passed away on Feb. 28, 2004 in LifeQuest Nursing Center in Quakertown. She was the wife of the late Samuel A. Ervin. Born in McAdoo, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Mary Masio. Prior to her retirement she was a machine operator for the former Hoffner Rayon Manufacturing Co. in Quakertown. She was a member of Christ Church of the United Church of Christ in Trumbauersville. Erwin, Ruth M. (nee Lutz)

Ruth M. Erwin, 87, Womelsdorf, died June 5 at 4:10 a.m. in Phoebe Berks Healthcare Center Inc., Wernersville, where she had been a patient for three weeks. Erwin was a longtime community volunteer and the subject of several Reading Eagle and Reading Times articles based on her later-in-life pursuit of academic degrees. She was most recently featured in an article July 28, 1998. Her husband, Donald F. Erwin, died May 29, 1984. Born in Stouchsburg, she was a daughter of the late Henry D. and Maggie M. (Weik) Lutz. Erwin was a 1935 graduate of Robesonia High School and received her nursing degree from Reading Area Community College in 1977. She graduated in 1987 at the age of 70 from Kutztown University with a degree in social welfare. Erwin served her social welfare internship at Bethany Children's Home, Womelsdorf, and in Wanblee, S.D., where she worked with the Lakota Sioux Tribe. She was owner-operator of the Judi and Joe Shoppe, a children's clothing store in Womelsdorf from 1948-1965. She later worked as a licensed practical nurse from 1967-1977 at St. Joseph Medical Center, and at Wernersville State Hospital from 1977 to 1987. Erwin was then employed in private-duty nursing and became a certified gerontologist in 1990. She held nursing positions at Independence Terrace, Womelsdorf, and Holly Stone, Newmanstown, Lebanon County. While studying abroad at Oxford University, England, she performed onstage with the school's theatrical club. Erwin was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, Womelsdorf. She was past president of the Womelsdorf Women's Club. Erwin served on the volunteer board of Berks Heim and was a member of the Reading Area Community College alumni board. She was a former republican party committee woman in Womelsdorf. Erwin was a former foreign exchange student coordinator for the Center for Cultural Interchange and was a volunteer with several area organizations including: the American Red Cross, Old Dry Road Farm and the FILA homework club of the Conrad Weiser School District. An avid bridge player, Erwin was a regular participant on the city bridge circuit. Erwin is survived by four daughters: Harriett L. (Hoffa) Ziegenfuss, Sinking Spring; Judith E. (Erwin) Rahn, Wyomissing; Christine R. (Erwin) Monyer, Rio Rancho, N.M.; and Beth M. (Erwin) Sullivan, Reading. There are also two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren. Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Hetrick Funeral Home, Womelsdorf. Burial will be in Millcreek Memorial Cemetery, Newmanstown.

Eschbach, Charles G.

Charles G. Eschbach died yesterday at his home on 2nd Street in Red Hill. He was 84. Born in Hereford Township, Berks County, he was a son of the late Herman and Emaline (Gerhart) Eschbach. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Huffs United Church of Christ. Surviving are a son, David of Red Hill, one grandchild and three great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Huffs UCC. Viewing will be 7-9 p.m. tomorrow in the Benner Funeral Home, Red Hill.

Eschbach, David A.

David A. Eschbach of 2nd Street, Red Hill, died yesterday afternoon of a heart attack while at work in the Boyertown Burial Casket Co., Boyertown. He was 58. Eschbach was a truck driver with the casket firm for about 32 years. Born in Hereford Township, he was a son of the late Charles and Katie (Hoch) Eschbach. He was a member of Huffs United Church of Christ. Surviving besides his widow, the former Katie Weller, are a daughter Edna, wife of Milton Hillegass of Red Hill, and one grandchild. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Benner Funeral Home, Red Hill. Viewing will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Mrs. Katie A. (Hoch) Eschbach, wife of Charles G. Eschbach, died Saturday at her home, Second St., Red Hill. She was 71. She was born in Hereford township, Berks county, a daughter of the late John and Sarah (Gerhard) Hoch. She was a member of Huffs Reformed church, Huffs Church. Last September, she and her husband observed their 52nd wedding anniversary. Surviving are her husband, one son, David Eschbach, Red Hill; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Diehl, Macungie, and Mrs. Linnie Warren, Laurel, Md.; two granddaughters, Edna Eschbach, at home, and Alberta, wife of Eugene Fronheiser, Barto; and one great-grandson, Larry Fronheiser, Barto.

Eschenbach, William Henry

William Henry Eschenbach, of Alburtis, passed away suddenly Monday night at 8.30 o'clock from a heart attack, in the home of his son, Charles W. Eschenbach, Main street, Alburtis, where he resided. He was eighty-three years of age. Retired for a number of years, Mr. Eschenbach had been a watchman of the Alburtis silk mill, a blacksmith and a gate tender. He was born in Allentown, the son of Charles and Catherine, nee Graeff, Eschenbach. His wife, Ellen Jane, nee Dankel, passed away three and a half years ago. Mr. Eschenbach was a member of the Reformed congregation of the Longswamp church, Washington camp, No. 197, and P.O.S. of A. of Alburtis. He is survived by one son, Charles W., of Alburtis; two daughters, Mrs. Eliza Bennett, of this city; Mrs. Fred Oels, of Alburtis; thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1.30 o'clock (DST) from the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Eschenbach. Short services at the home will be continued at the Longswamp church with Rev. Donald Englert, of Mertztown, officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. Viewing will be on Friday night from 7 to 9 p.m.

Eschleman, Frances F.

Frances F. Eschleman, 76, died June 29 at 10:47 p.m. in her residence in Bern Township. Her husband, Paul F. Eschleman, died in 2000. Born in Temple, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Kathryn (Green) Frick. Eschleman and her husband were the owners-operators of P.F. Eschleman Inc., Reading, for 43 years. She retired in 1995 as vice president. She was previously employed by the Wide Awake Shirt Co., Reading. Eschleman was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Reading. Surviving is a daughter, Patricia A. (Eschleman) Hanson, Leesport. Other survivors include two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Milkins Funeral Home Inc., Temple. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reiffton.

Eshbach, Alice B. (nee Reinert)

Mrs. Alice B. Eshbach of 427 W. Douglas St., Reading, widow of Irwin Eshbach, died yesterday in the Reading Hospital. Born in Huffs Church, she was a daughter of the late Abraham and Ellen (Beidler) Reinert. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Reading. Her only survivors are nieces and nephews. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Francis F. Seidel Funeral Chapel, Reading, with viewing 7-8:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Eshbach, Esther (nee Batz)

On Friday afternoon, November 28, the remains of Mrs. Esther Eshbach, Shultzville, were laid at rest in the cemetery adjoining Huff's Church. Clayton Moyer and Ambrose Stauffer, Bechtelsville, were the undertakers in charge. The deceased was a daughter of Daniel Batz and wife Julia Ann (nee Mohr) and was born in Berks county in the neighborhood of Hill church, March 17, 1838, where she was baptized in her infancy. In early youth, she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Rev. Conrad Miller in the same church, St. Joseph's or Hill church. She was joined in marriage to Henry Eshbach by the Rev. Alfred J. Herman. The union was blessed with three sons and seven daughters, of whom one son and 4 daughters survive. Her husband died many years ago. She passed away from cerebral apoplexy at the ripe age of 86 years, 8 months and 7 days on Monday, November 24.

LaVerne S. "Sonny" Eshbach, 71, Washington Township, died July 7 in Pottstown Medical Center, where he had been a patient since July 5. He was the husband of Pauline M. (Gabel) Eshbach. Born in Gilbertsville, he was a son of the late Paul and Florence (Smith) Eshbach. Eshbach had been employed for 14 years as a laborer in the metal shop of Bally Case & Cooler Inc. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Bechtelsville. Eshbach was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He is also survived by two daughters, Linda D. (Eshbach) Rowland, Birdsboro, and Loretta F. (Eshbach) Gamer, Boyertown. There are also three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Morrell Funeral Home Inc., Boyertown. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Boyertown.

Eshelman, Serena M.

Services were held for Serena M. Eshelman, 95, of Tulpehocken Road, Wyomissing, formerly of Birdsboro and St. Petersburg, Fla, who died March 15 at the Mifflin Center, Cumru Township. Born in Birdsboro, she worked for more than 16 years as a registered nurse for the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, West Reading, before retiring in 1976. Prior to that she worked at Jefferson Hospital. She was a 1926 graduate of Birdsboro High School, and a 1930 graduate of Thomas Jefferson University Nursing Arts Department. Eshelman was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Birdsboro and a member of the Bird Chapter 460 Order of the Eastern Star, Birdsboro, where she was a member for 50 years. Surviving is a sister, Leah (Murray) Gilbert of Reading. Contributions may be sent to St. Mark's Lutheran Church Capital Improvement Fund, Five Brooke Manor, Birdsboro, PA 19508. Burial was in Birdsboro Cemetery. The Dengler Funeral Home Inc., Birdsboro, handled the arrangements.

Essig, Helen M.

Helen M. Essig, 91, formerly of Cumru Township, died July 29 at 6:40 p.m. in ManorCare Health Services Inc., West Reading, where she had been a resident since Dec. 13, 2004. She was the wife of Donald W. Essig. Born in Fritztown, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Mary (Bohn) Smith. Essig had been employed for 10 years by Donuts Galore, Berkshire Mall, retiring in 1978. She previously worked at Berkshire Knitting Mills, Wyomissing. She was a member of Bern United Church of Christ, Bern Township. Essig is also survived by a son, Jack B. Smith, in Oregon. Other survivors include three sisters: Anetta (Smith) White, Reading; Betty (Smith) Gower, Penn Township; and Fern (Smith) Neitzel, West Lawn. There are also four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Lamm & Witman Funeral Home Inc., Wernersville. Essig, William H.

William H. Essig of Pottstown died on Wednesday from typhoid fever, after eight weeks illness. He is survived by his widow, Sallie and son Charles. He was well known in Boyertown.

Mrs. Amy S. Esterly of Bowers, widow of Henry W. Esterly, died yesterday in Allentown Hospital. She was 78. Born in Buffalo Mills, Bedford County, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Dunstan. She was a member of the Longswamp United Church of Christ. Surviving are three sons, Henry W. and Percival R., both of Bowers, and Bryan C., at home; a daughter Viola, wife of Ray J. Keiser of Topton; eight grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Earl A. Trexler Funeral Home, Topton. Viewing will be 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Esterly, Eliza Mahala (nee Dankel)

Mrs. Eliza Mahala Esterly, wife of Glancey Esterly, of Wescoesville, R.F.D., near Trexlertown, died at her home at that place yesterday morning at one o'clock, aged 64 years and 4 days. She was born in Longswamp township, a daughter of William and Eliza (nee Schmoyer) Dankel. She was a member of the Longswamp church for many years, and was highly respected among her many friends. Besides her husband, she is survived by the following daughters and sons: Lillian, Clarence and Mrs. Daniel Geisinger, at home; Mrs. Mahlon Brown, Mrs. Percy Brown and Bryan Esterly, of Gibralter, Berks county; Harry, of Bethlehem, and Charles and Paul, of near Minesite. Brothers and sisters surviving are: Oliver Dankel and Mrs. William Eschenbach, of Alburtis; Mrs. Jacob Dries and Tilghman Esterly, of Emaus; William, of this city; Nicholas, of Bath, and Christian, of Hazleton. Nine grandchildren also survive.

Esterly, Schweitz Road, Rockland Township, who died of natural causes Jan. 28 shortly after being admitted to St. Joseph Medical Center. Burial was private. He was the husband of Barbara A. (Fleming) Esterly. Born in Rockland Township, he was a son of Daisy S. (Conrad) Esterly Diener, Ruscombmanor Township, and the late Bryan C. Esterly. He was last employed as a custodian in the Exeter Township School District for more than seven years. Previously he was employed as an inspector by Stanley G. Flagg Co. Inc., Stowe, for more than 10 years, and as a crane operator by the Birdsboro Corp., Birdsboro, for 24 years. He was a member of Christ (Mertz) Lutheran Church, Dryville. Also surviving are a son, Glenn A. Esterly, Hempstead, N.Y.; a daughter, Sherry L. (Esterly) Stitzel, and two grandchildren. Other survivors include a sister, Darlene S. (Esterly) Schildt, Fleetwood, and a brother, Bryan H. Esterly, Apex, N.C.

Esterly, Glancy J.

In failing health for the past several months, Glancy J. Esterly, a retired farmer, and well known in various parts of Lehigh and Berks counties, where he operated large farms, died Wednesday morning at the home of his son, Charles Esterly, 528 North street, Emaus, aged 70 years and 26 days. Mr. Esterly was a son of the late Henry and wife, Emma Quinter Esterly. He was born in Exeter township, Berks county. His farming activities were near Lyons, Alburtis, Red Lion and Trexlertown. His wife, Mahala, nee Dankel, died six years ago. Mr. Esterly was a member of the Longswamp Reformed congregation and Lodge 2159, Order of the Golden Link, this city. He is survived by the following children: Harry, Mertztown R.D.; Mrs. Mahlon Brown, Mrs. Percy Brown and Lillian and Bryan Esterly, Gilbraltar, Berks county; Charles and Clarence Esterly and Mrs. Daniel Geisinger, Emaus, and Paul Esterly, Minesite. Eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one brother, Jacob, Reading, and a sister, Mrs. William Huyette, Birdsboro, also survive. The funeral will be held on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock from the home of his son, Charles Esterly, 528 North street, Emaus. Short services at the house will be followed by continued services in the Longswamp church. Rev. D. E. Schaeffer will officiate. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church.

On the 2d inst., in the city of Philadelphia, Mary Lizzie, eldest child of Jacob C. and Mary J. Esterly, aged 6 years, 8 months and 2 days.

Esterly, Russell H.

Russell H. Esterly, aged 15 years, who fell 30 feet into an abandoned quarry at Fourteenth and Buttonwood streets, while playing Friday afternoon, and died Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Homeopathic Hospital, was a son of Warren and Bertha (Pennell) Esterly, 325 North Ninth street. There survive three brothers, Carl, Warren and Jack, at home.

Esterly, Sue Schearer

The funeral of Mrs. Sue Schearer Esterly, wife of Amos Esterly, Reading, was held today at 1:30 p.m. at the Henninger Funeral Home, the Rev. Morris D. Slifer officiating. Interment was made in Charles Evans Cemetery. Among her survivors is her sister Anna Schearer, of Kutztown.

Evans, Alice R.

Services will be Saturday for Alice R. (Rhoads) Evans, 82, of the Frederick Mennonite Community in Frederick, who died January 27 at her home. She was the widow of Hayden O. Evans. Born in Pottstown, she was a paymaster at Gudebrod Silk Co. in Stowe for 42 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Pottstown. Evans was also a member of the Pottstown Memorial Medical Center North Auxiliary. Surviving are a sister, Jean Boyer of Gilbertsville; a stepson, Hayden O. Evans of Mill Valley; Calif.; and two step-grandchildren. Contributions may be made to Zion United Church of Christ, 209 Chestnut St., Pottstown, PA 19464; or to a charity of the donor's choice. Friends may call from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Schumacher & Benner Funeral Home, 359 King St., Pottstown. The Rev. Peter C. Nichols will officiate. Burial will be private in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Tamaqua.

Death of Mrs. Ann Evans. Mrs. Ann Evans, widow of Rev. E. Evans, died shortly before 6 o'clock Friday evening at her home, 320 Laurel. Deceased was 81 years of age and was a native of England, where 2 sisters still reside. Her only living relative in this vicinity is R.J. Mills, the hatter, who is a nephew.

Annamae L. Evans, 76, of 2408 Province Road, Colony Park, died Monday in ManorCare Health Services, Spring Township, Berks County, where she lived since June 30. Born in Frackville, she was a daughter of the late Raymond C. and Marie T. Cooper Eiche. An Army veteran of World War II, she was employed as a clerical worker of the Manhattan Project. She was employed for 10 years as a computer operator by Harleysville Insurance Co., retiring in 1980. She was a member of Advent Lutheran Church, West Lawn, was worthy matron of Reliance Chapter 503, Order of Eastern Star, Souderton, Montgomery County, from 1966-67, serving for part of that time as secretary. Surviving are her husband, Frederick R.; a daughter, Lucinda A. Meisberger, Leesport; a son, Timothy T., Souderton; two sisters, Florence E. Rowlands, West Lawn, and Marie T. Hastings, Upper Darby; three brothers, Charles R. and Waldemar R. Eiche, both of Frackville, and Raymond C. Eiche Jr., Souderton; two grandchildren. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday from Bean Funeral Home, Sinking Spring. Interment will be private in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Frackville.

Elizabeth W. Evans, a retired Reading school teacher, died July 7 in the Mifflin Center. Evans, 90, Shillington, was employed for 36 years as an English and history teacher in the Reading School District, retiring in 1972. Born in Lower Heidelberg Township, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Sarah (Van Reed) Evans. Evans was a president of the Woman's Club of Reading for many years. She was a member of St. John's Reformed Church, Sinking Spring. Surviving are a niece and a nephew. Burial will be in St. John's Reformed Church Cemetery, Sinking Spring. The Boyko Funeral Home, Macungie, Lehigh County, is in charge of arrangements.

Eyer, Jennie G. Krick

Services were held in the Leibensperger Funeral Home, Hamburg, for Jennie G. Krick Eyer, 92, of Seip Lane, Perry Township, who died April 22 in Reading Hospital, where she had been a patient for 10 days. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery, Hamburg. She was the wife of John L. Eyer. She was predeceased by her first husband, Henry G. Krick, who died Dec. 5, 1951. Born in Port Clinton, she was a daughter of the late James G. and Ida R. (Mohl) Henry. Until retiring in 1957, she was employed by the Hamburg Broom Works for four years. She was a member of St. Luke's Church, Shoemakersville. Also surviving are a son, Carl E. Krick, Shoemakersville, and a daughter, Betty Lou (Krick) Angstadt, Perry Township. Other survivors include two stepsons, John L. Eyer Jr., Upper Bern Township, and Nelson D. Eyer, Perry Township; and two stepdaughters, Barbara M. (Eyer) Wicks, Upper Tulpehocken Township, and Peggy A. (Eyer) Hartman, Upper Bern Township. There are also 10 grandchildren and stepgrandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Martin C. Krick, who died in 1985.

Eyrich, Elmira

Child Scalded to Death. Its Mother Tried to Save it From One Accident, and it Meets With Another.

While Mrs. Wm. Eyrich, 127 Grape st., was carrying a bucket of scalding water, she noticed her 13 months-old daughter, Elmira, creeping towards the steps leading from the middle room to the kitchen, and the mother fearing her babe would fall down the steps, ran towards her with the bucket of water in one hand, and just as she caught hold of the babe the latter fell into the water, scalding her left arm badly, from the effects of which she died.

Harvey W. Eyrich, 80, formerly of 130 Boas Lane, Cumru Township, died Friday at 7:20 p.m. in Berks Heim, where he had resided since Jan. 22, 1990. Born in Wyomissing, he was a son of th elate John and Virgie (Sheidy) Eyrich. Eyrich had been employed for 25 years as a farmer by Tulpehocken Farms, before retiring. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are a brother, Kenneth, West Reading, and a sister, Violet K., wife of Arthur C. Boas, with whom he last resided. Services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Whelan, Fleischmann & Schwartz Funeral Home Inc., Exeter Township. Burial will be in Hain's Church Cemetery, near Wernersville.

Eyrich--In this city,on Saturday, Sept. 21, Jonathan Eyrich, in the 63d year of his age. The relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend his funeral, from his late residence, No. 26 South 4th street, on Tuesday, 24th inst., at 2 p.m. Services at the house. Oliver G. "Ollie" Eyrich, former Reading High School athlete and a member of the Berks County Sports Hall of Fame, died May 5 at 6:57 p.m. in Spruce Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, West Reading, where he had resided since Nov. 5. Eyrich, 84, West Reading, was the husband of Doris R. (Alban) Eyrich. He was the first Berks County football player to make first-team all-state in 1940 with a Reading High team that went 8-1-1. As a junior, Eyrich was the top scorer in the Big 15 Conference with 17 touchdowns. A track star, he led Reading High to a victory in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. Eyrich completed his high school career in Newport News, Va., where he was also an all-state athlete. He was inducted into the local sports hall of fame in 1999 for his football abilities. Eyrich was also named to the Berks County Football Coaches Hall of Fame. Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Warren D. and Stella (Edwards) Eyrich. Eyrich was employed for 37 years as a car salesman by Morganstern, Emerson and Marshall Chevrolet, all of Reading, retiring in 1984. He was one of the founders of the West Reading midget football program. Eyrich is also survived by a son, W. Dewey, Louisville, Colo.; and two daughters, Olivia L. (Eyrich) Peterson and Elizabeth A. (Eyrich) Stouffer, both of Fort Collins, Colo. Other survivors include two brothers, William and George, both of Reading. There are also six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services will be private. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., West Reading, is in charge of arrangements.

Eyrich, Sarah

Sarah Eyrich, aged 53, died at the almshouse yesterday of general debility. She has friends residing in this city and it is probable that they will take charge of the body.

Eyrich, Sophia (nee Keen)

Mrs. Sophia Eyrich died at her home, 28 South 4th, on Sunday night, in her 82nd year. Her death was sudden and unexpected. She had been in her usual good health during the day, and was suddenly seized with an attack of heart disease during the night and died several hours later. Deceased was the widow of Eli Eyrich. Her maiden name was Keen. She was a life-long member of St. Paul's Memorial Reformed church and was a very estimable woman. James Eyrich, of this city, is the only surviving son.
