James, the eight-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. James Beidler, of Rittenhouse Gap, died on Thursday evening in terrible agony, suffering from a well developed attack of hydrophobia. The lad had been playing on the front porch of his home three months ago when a strange dog attacked him, badly lacerating his arm, and was driven away, only after a hard fight by the mother of the boy. A local treatment for hydrophobia was promptly administered and the wound healed nicely, the lad feeling as usual. On Tuesday of last week, however, grave symptoms manifested themselves and the sight of water and presence of light in the room threw the lad into convulsions. He had to be tied down in bed until evening, when death ended his pitiful sufferings. The funeral was held yesterday forenoon at Huff's Church, Rev. J. N. Blatt officiating.

John Benzel, who owns and lives upon a small farm of 25 acres of Lower Alsace, Berks County, one-half mile from Gechter's Hotel and three miles from Friendensburg, was struck by lightning and killed between 1 and 4 o'clock yesterday morning. He and his wife were in bed when the storm arose, but Mrs. Benzel as is the custom of many women, arose and went downstairs, her husband remained.
The lightning struck the gable end of the house, passed to the bedroom, struck the head board of the bed and entered the head of Mr. Benzel and passed down and through the body, leaving a black seared mark. The bed instantly was on fire and it was all in flames when Mrs. Benzel returned to the room. She screamed out at the terrible sight, tried to arouse her husband, but failed and with the assistance of the children extinguished the flames by carrying water from a spring 135 feet away. Mr. Benzel was blistered and some of the bed clothing consumed.
Dr. William H. Hertzog, of Friedensburg, was at once sent for, but his assistance was no use. The wife thought her husband had only been stunned, but he had evidently been instantly killed as the charge must have been torture.
Deceased was a native of Germany, coming to this country when still a young man. A wife and a number of children survive.
A neighbor of Mr. Benzel's says that the family were awakened by the storm and all had gone down stairs but Mr. Benzel. After the bolt had struck the house, one of the daughters remarked that father had not come down yet. Mrs. Benzel then went up stairs and was horrified to see the body of her husband partly dressed laying across the bed.
The bolt had struck the man while he was up and dressing on the neck and passed through his body. He then fell forward on to the bed. A red spot was on one side of his neck caused by the lightning, where it struck him.
