Boyertown, May 1 (Special) – William A. Bauer, senior member of the firm of W. A. Bauer & Sons, died suddenly at 7:40 o’clock Saturday evening at his home, 39 North Reading Avenue, next door to his store, which he founded here in 1907.
He was age 70 years, 4 months and 4 days.
Death followed a series of three heart attacks, the first of which he suffered Saturday morning. He was surrounded by his family at the time of death, although none of the members, including the deceased gave a thought that death was lurking near.
Mr. Bauer was a great fisherman and quoits thrower, both of which were his only hobbies, except his store business, which to him had become a real pleasure in life.
Throughout the day he was talking with friends and late in the afternoon, when his son, Henry, and the Rev. Bernard H. Creamers, who had paid him a visit, he spoke about a contemplated fishing trip during the coming week, he having spent a day the past week with his neighbor merchant, Lawrence Sands, along a stream.
Then some item of business relative to the store’s 25th anniversary which the firm was soon going to celebrate, came to the elder Bauer’s mind and his son, Lawrence, was discussing this matter with his father. A short time later he was seized with another painful heart attack and the family physician, Dr. C. B. Dotterrer, was called. In a few moments he expired.
His death came as a shock to the community. He was held in high esteem by his fellow citizens. He was an active and devout member of St. Columkill Catholic Church on South Chestnut street, this borough, of which he was one of the first members, having helped to bring and build this parish in Boyertown some years ago.
He began his career as a merchant, as a clerk in the general store of Samuel B. Bechtel, at Congo, many years ago. After working at that place for some time he changed his position and received similar employment with the W. C. Beecher department store at Pottstown, and when this store was sold to Ellis Mills, one of the town’s leading department stores for years, it was in his employ for 14 years and was always considered a reliable salesman.
Twenty-five years ago this coming September, W. A. Bauer together with David S. Koch, of this place purchased the department store then owned by the estate of Morris M. Anderson, the latter of whom had some years previous purchased it from Charles A. Mory, Anderson was a victim of the Boyertown Opera House catastrophe. Bauer and Koch, the latter having been in the employ of Anderson, conducted the store under the title W. A. Bauer and Company for several years when Mr. Koch retired from the business and Mr. Bauer’s two sons, Anthony and Lawrence K. Bauer, were admitted to the firm and thereafter was known as W. A. Bauer & Sons.
The W. A. Bauer & Sons merchandising establishment gave to Boyertown, after a complete renovation of the store, one of the most modern department stores in any town the size of this borough in the state. Its completeness and merchandise sold has made for its great success.
Deceased was actively interested in the betterment of the borough and was always interested in the civic welfare. For years he was a regular attendant at the meetings of the Greater Boyertown Association, the fore-runner of the Chamber of Commerce, which organization elected him treasurer 16 years ago. When the latter organization was organized four years ago he still continued in active service and was the treasurer to his end. This besides his church was the only organization of which he was a member. Much charitable work was done quietly by this merchant to families in need.
His strong character and friendly nature won for him a host of friends in every walk of life, throughout this section.
Deceased was a son of the late William A. and Sarah (Adam) Bauer and was born in Bally, December 26, 1861. He was the last member of his family. Five children preceded him in death.
Besides his widow, Sarah (nee Koch), four children survive: Mary, wife of Harry Saylor, Anthony, Lawrence and Henry, off of town.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday, at 10 o’clock (day light time), with Requiem Mass in the church of the Most Blessed Sacrament at Bally. The Rev. Bernard H. Creamers, of St. Columkill Church here; Rev. Aloysius F. Earl, of Church of Most Blessed Sacrament, Bally, and Rev. William A. Wachter, pastor of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Pottstown, will be the officiating clergy. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church.
