Dr. L.W. Abrams died at his home in Brooklyn, N.Y., aged 60 years. There remain one brother, E.L. Abrams, a former resident of Reading; and two sisters, Mrs. Carrie A. Irvine and Mrs. Gerald F. Dale, this city. The body will be brought to this city and taken to the home of Gerald F. Dale, 528 Buttonwood.

Achenbach, Robert W.

Robert W. Achenbach, 86, South Heidelberg Township, formerly of Wilshire, died Aug. 31, 2008, of natural causes in his residence.

Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Frederick and Anna (Thompson) Achenbach.

He joined the former City Bank & Trust Co. of Reading at 540 Penn Street on Oct. 21, 1953, as a teller trainee. Three months later, he became assistant manager at that bank's first branch, which opened near Fifth and Walnut streets (a site relocated to Fifth and Washington streets).

In April 1955, Achenbach was named auditor of that institution. He served as auditor through the Peoples Trust-City Bank merger in 1960, until being named comptroller in 1965.

In 1968, the name of the bank changed to Bank of Pennsylvania and his title changed to vice president and comptroller. He was promoted to senior vice president and comptroller on April 1, 1983.

Since the inception of B-O-P Corporation in 1969, later to be known as Bancorp of Pennsylvania, he served in similar capacities from then to now as those for the bank.

Additionally, Achenbach was director and treasurer of Financial Realty Inc.; director, assistant secretary and assistant treasurer of Callowhill Life Insurance Co.; and director and treasurer of Financial Land Corp. and Financial Mineral Corp.

While with City Bank in 1958, he removed one of its major assets, Joanne Christian, and made her Mrs. Achenbach. They had three children: Carolyn, Mark and Barbara; and five grandchildren.

He graduated from Reading High School in 1939, followed by 31/2 years of military service in World War II (11/2 with the signal corps in the European Theatre and a technical sergeant). In the period prior to overseas duty, he attended Lehigh University under the Army Specialized Training Program. He also attended Pennsylvania Bankers Association summer schools held at Penn State University.

Achenbach held pre-standard and standard graduation certificates from American Institute of Banking. In 1965, he graduated from Stonier Graduate School of Banking-Rutgers University.

Achy, Charles Henry

In Bernville, on the 14th ult., Charles Henry, son of Aaron and Maria Amanda Achy, aged 2 years, 3 months and 11 days.

Ackalusky, Hazel E.

Hazel E. Ackalusky, 71, of 701 Pierce St., Pottsville, died Saturday at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center. Born in Pottsville, May 24, 1929, she was a daughter of the late William and Eleanor Edden Frankenstein. She was a 1948 graduate of Pottsville High School. She worked in the business office as a comptroller in the former Van Heusen Corp., Pottsville. A local practicing artist, she studied at the Wyomissing Institute of Fine Arts. Her subject matter included scenes of Schuylkill County, florals and prints, and her favorite mediums were watercolor, oil and pastel. She was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville, Schuylkill River Group, Berks Art Alliance, Schuylkill County Council for the Arts, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, and Historical Society of Schuylkill County. She was also a charter member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C., served two terms as president of the Allied Artists of Schuylkill County, was on the board of directors of Allied Artists of Schuylkill County, and was awarded an Honorary Life Membership. She was listed in the Who's Who of American Women, 20th Edition, and also the 52nd Edition (Marquis'). She was preceded in death by a brother, William Frankenstein, on Oct. 2, 1997. Surviving are her husband, James, to whom she was married 51 years; two daughters, Eleanor Pfeiffenberger, Hummelstown, and Ramona Cohen, Frankfort, Ill.; five sisters, Eleanor Melinchock, Jane Murphy and Ruth Smigo, all of Pottsville, Marie Carvano, Schuylkill Haven, and Estelle Madara, New Philadelphia; a brother, Joseph Frantz, Lykens; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews; grand nieces and grand nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday from St. Patrick Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Pottsville. Lord Funeral Home Inc., Pottsville, is in charge of arrangements.

Acker, E.L.

Acker, Eva E.

Services were held in the Leibensperger Funeral Home, Hamburg, for Eva E. Acker, 86, formerly of Hall Road, Perry Township, who died March 12 in Reading Hospital, where she had been a patient ten days. She was taken to the hospital from Spruce Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, West Reading, where she had resided since Oct. 12, 1999. Burial was in Zion's Cemetery, Perry Township. Born in Shoemakersville, she was a daughter of the late Milton Smith and Ida (Deisher) Koller. Until retiring in 1982, she was employed as a factory worker by Burkey's Knitting Mill, Hamburg, for 25 years. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Hamburg. Surviving are two daughters, Dolores S. Kirby, a resident at Evans Retirement Center, Fleetwood, and LaRue C. (Acker) Dietrich, Shoemakersville. There are also three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Acker, Jacob

After suffering to a considerable degree for over a year, Jacob Acker, residing for many years near this borough, died last Wednesday. He was troubled with dropsy and other ills. Deceased was born in Maxatawny township, Berks county, over 75 years ago, and resided in these parts most of his lifetime. He was well known and generally respected. For years he was engaged in the lime burning business. He was a veteran of the late war and did considerable service for our country. Of a quaint, genial disposition, he had many friends. Besides his wife, he left five children, all married, being William, of town; Charles, of Emaus; Mrs. Al. Funk, of near East Texas; Mrs. John Hower, of Saucon, and Mrs. G. Adam Moyer, of near town. The funeral took place Monday forenoon and was largely attended. Service was held at the house and in Solomon's church. Rev. C. E. Schaeffer officiated and preached an excellent sermon from Phil. 1:21.

Acker, Mary Ann (nee Carl)

Mrs. Mary Ann, widow of David A. Acker, died at 10.30 o'clock yesterday morning at her home, the residence of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Richard F. Peters, 42 North Third street, Coplay, from ailments incident to old age. She was aged 83 years. She had been in good health and very active in body until taken ill last week while on a visit. She was returned to her home Saturday and on Sunday became bedfast. Mrs. Acker was born in Longswamp township, Berks county, a daughter of the late Samuel and Judith Eck Carl. She was a resident of Coplay for many years. She was a member of the Reformed congregation of the Egypt church. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Peters, with whom she resided; three sons, James E., and Clinton W. Acker, of Egypt, and John A. Acker, Hagerstown; fourteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Eliza Fetzer, this city, and Mrs. Rosa Fisher, Topton, and a brother, J. A. Carl, of Pottstown. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon with services at her late home at 2 o'clock, Rev. T. R. Brendle officiating. Interment will be made in the Egypt cemetery.

Acker -- In Reading, on July 23d, Uriah R. Acker, aged 87 years, 4 months and 15 days.

Ackerman, Lester S.

Lester S. Ackerman, 80, of Richlandtown died May 1, 2003 in the Phoebe Richland Health Care Center, Richlandtown. He was the husband of Estella M. (Gross) Ackerman. They were married 56 years last June. Born in Richlandtown, he was the son of the late Warren E. and Mary E. (Sames) Ackerman. In 1984 he retired from W. R. Grace Co., Quakertown, where he worked as a machine operator. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Richlandtown, where he was active in the World Hunger Program. During WWII he served with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Quakertown American Legion Post 242. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, David L. at home; two daughters, Ruth A. of Richlandtown and Mary A. Gillen of Richlandtown; two brothers, Harold of Quakertown and Ray of Macungie. He was predeceased by a brother, Paul, and a sister, Elizabeth, Bartholomew. Services were held May 6. Memorial contributions can be made to VNA of Pottstown Hospice, 1963 E. Ackerman, Thomas G.

Thomas G. Ackerman, 73, of Allentown, formerly of Hellertown died Sat. Nov. 23, 2002 at Luther Crest. He was the husband of Gladys (Stoudt) Ackerman. He was born in Bethlehem to the late Thomas J. and Margaret T. (Kitzhoffer) Ackerman. Prior to retiring in 1983 he was employed by Bethlehem Steel . He was a sergeant in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Orefield. In addition to his wife he is survived by sons, Michael T. of Sutton, MA, Robert T., of Coopersburg, and Pat of Bethlehem; and grandchildren Mary and Rachel. Adam, Anna M.

Anna M. Adam, 83, Allentown, formerly of Kutztown, died July 13 at 3:15 a.m. in Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown, where she had been a patient since June 20. Her husband, Luther H. Adam, died April 26, 1999. Born in Maxatawny Township, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Bertha (Dietrich) Coller. Adam was employed from 1968 to 1983 as a sewing machine operator by Kutztown Sportswear. She was a member of Zion (Moselem) Lutheran Church, Richmond Township, where she was a Sunday school teacher for more than 30 years and a former council woman. Adam was a volunteer for Meals-on-Wheels in the Lehigh County. Surviving are a daughter, Gloria F. (Adam) Lotte, Allentown, with whom she resided; and three sons: Carlton L., Maxatawny Township; Leonard R., Bridgeport, Montgomery County; and Mark R., Allentown. Other survivors include a sister, Esther (Coller) Zimmerman, Hamburg. There are also four grandchildren and a stepgranddaughter. Adam, Arlene E.

Memorial Services were held in Zion Lutheran Church, Perry Township, for Arlene E. Adam, formerly of Moselem Springs Road, Perry Township, who died March 11 in Laurel Center Genesis Elder Care, Tilden Township, where she had been a resident since February 2003. Burial was in Zion's Cemetery, Perrty Township. Born in Windsor Township, she was a daughter of the late Jacob H. and Emma M. (Kershner) Adam. She was a 1936 graduate of Kutztown State Teacher's College. In 1944, she received a master's degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania, and in 1964, received a master's degree in library science from Columbia University, New York City. Until she retired in 1977, Adam was employed as school librarian for 32 years at Bergenfield High School, Bergenfield, N.J. Previously, she worked at Pemberton High School, Pemberton, N.J. She was a former treasurer of Centerport Grange 1600 and was past president of both the Leesport Women's Club and Shoemakersville Senior Citizens. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she served as former Sunday school and Bible school teacher and council member. Adam was also a former delegate to the National Convention for Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. There are no immediate survivors. Services will be held July 3, 10:30 a.m. in the Edward J. Hildenbrand Funeral Home, Kutztown, for Dennis H. Adam, of Temple, who died of natural causes June 29 in Reading Hospital. Burial will be in Zion (Moselem) Cemetery, Richmond Township. Born in Shoemakersville, he was a son of Pauline E. (Krick) Adam, Kutztown, and the late Edward A. Adam. He was employed as general manager by the Penn Lane Insulating Glass Co., Reading. Adam was an Army veteran. He was a member of Zion (Moselem) Lutheran Church, Richmond Township. Also surviving are two sisters, Doloris M. (Adam) Horwith, Schnecksville, Lehigh County, and Charyl A. (Adam) Bailey, Kutztown; and four brothers: Douglas E. Adam, Robesonia; Melvin C. Adam, El Mirage, Ariz.; Michale P. Adam, Midlothian, Ill; and Mark A. Adam, New Smithville, Lehigh County.

Adam, Howard A.

Private services were arranged by the Ludwick Funeral Home for Howard A. Adam, formerly of East Vine Street, Fleetwood, who died May 13 in ManorCare Health Services, West Reading, where he had resided since March 27. Burial was in Zion Moselem Church Cemetery, Kutztown. Born in Richmond Township, he was a son of the late James H. and Maggie E. (Adam) Adam. He was a self-employed farmer in Richmond Township for more than 60 years. Adam was a member of Zion Moselem Lutheran Church, Kutztown. Surviving are two brothers, Raymond S. Adam, Kutztown, and Amandus I. Adam, Hamburg; and two sisters, Helen C. (Adam) Miller, Kutztown, and Anna M. (Adam) Wolfe, Fleetwood.

Among the local survivors of Howard A. Adam, 83, formerly of Fleetwood, who died May 13 in ManorCare Health Services, West Reading, where he had resided since March 27, is a brother, Amandus I. Adam, Hamburg.

Adam, Leona I.

Services will be held May 22, 1:30 p.m., in the Ludwick Funeral Home, Kutztown, for Leona I. Adam, 91, formerly of West Main Street, Kutztown, who died May 17 in Kutztown Manor, where she had resided since Aug. 17, 1998. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Kutztown. She was predeceased by her husband, Willard R. Adam, who died May 10, 1969. Born in Atglen, Chester County, she was a daughter of the late John M. and Ida J. (Harkins) Ferguson. Until retiring in 1991, she was employed as a cook by the Kutztown Fire Company for 15 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kutztown. Surviving are a son, Wilbur Adam, Kutztown.

"Mickey" Adam, formerly of Kutztown Road, Maxatawny Township, who died May 26 in Kutztown Manor, where she had resided since Dec. 1999. Burial will be Fairview Cemetery, Kutztown. Born in Maxatawny Township, she was a daughter of the late Herbert S. and Erma M. (Fegley) Adam. Until retiring in 1982, she was employed by Deisher Knitting Mills, Kutztown, for 32 years. Adam, Marvin H.

Services were held in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Carson City, Nevada, for Marvin H. Adam, of Carson City and formerly of Topton, who died Nov. 16 in the Evergreen Health Care Center, Carson City. Burial was in Lone Mountain Cemetery, Carson City. He was the husband of Doris (Boone) Adam. Born in Kutztown, he was a son of the late Herbert S. and Erma (Fegely) Adam. Until retiring in 1983, he was employed by the Postal Service in Carson City for 22 years. He was a 1939 graduate of Kutztown High School and a World War II Army veteran, receiving the Silver Star. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Carson City. Also surviving are two daughters, Cathy (Adam) Douglas and Suzanne Adam, both of Carson City. There are also four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Other survivors include two brothers, Kermit Adam, Topton, and Sterling Adam, Kutztown; and a sister, Margaret Adam, Kutztown. Adam, Solon E.

Solon E. Adam, 78, husband of Lula (Knappenberger) Adam, died Sunday night at his home, Longswamp, Mertztown R.D., Berks County. Last Nov. 17, he was hit by a car as he crossed the Longswamp-Mertztown road in front of his home to go to a mailbox. He was hospitalized for three weeks. He became bedfast Feb. 18. He was a son of the late Michael and Leah (Berk) Adam. He was a former resident of Emmaus. Two years ago he moved to Longswamp. In his early years he worked as a stone mason and was employed by the Wenz Company of Allentown. Later he became a farmer and worked several farms in Lehigh County. The last was the one now know as the Hess-Lehigh Farm. He retired 26 years ago. He was a member of Western Salisbury Evangelical and Reformed Church and Sunday School. He was also a member of Mystic Star Lodge 73 and Encampment 15, IOOF, both of Emmaus, and of the Allentown Moose and the Knights of the Golden Eagle, Kutztown. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Lee W. M. and Harold B., both of emmaus; two daughter, Lillie, wife of Lloyd Long, and Mrs. Eva V. Seip, both of Macungie R. 1; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three stepchildren, Margaret, wife of Norman Kreibel, Lansdale R. 2; Mabel, wife of Paul Ziegler, Topton, and Mrs. Eva Hockman of center Valley, and a sister, Mrs. Alice Leopold of Allentown. Two wives preceded him in death, Jennie (Butz) and Bertha (Fink), as well as a son, Willis B., a sister, Louise Sensendeffer, and two brothers, Frank and Howard. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Horace W. Schantz Funeral Home, 3rd and Main Sts., Emmaus.

Suzanne E. Adam, 65, Richmond Township, died of natural causes Aug. 9 in Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown, where she had been a patient eight days. She was the wife of Calvin G. Adam. Born in Kutztown, she was a daughter of the late Ralph G. and Winifred (Folk) Boyer. Adam was employed as a sewing-machine operator by the Kutztown Shoe Co. and the Adidas Shoe Company, Kutztown. She was a member of Zion (Moselem) Lutheran Church, Richmond Township. Adam is also survived by a daughter, Sally A. Adam, Richmond Township. Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in Zion (Moselem) Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Zion (Moselem) Church Cemetery, Richmond Township. Adams, Alice M.

Services were held in St. John's (Gernant's) Union Church, Ontelaunee Township, for Alice M. Adams, 89, of Adams Road, Ontelaunee Township, who died June 30 in Reading Hospital, where she had been a patient since June 5. Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery. She was predeceased by her husband, William C. Adams, who died Oct. 14, 1988. Born in Perry Township, she was a daughter of the late William S. and Sallie A. (DeLong) Schaeffer. Until retiring, she and her husband operated a dairy farm at their residence for many years. She was a member of the United Church of Christ congregation of St. John's (Gernant's) Church, Onteluanee Township. Surviving are three sons: Ronald W. Adams, Perry Township; and Russell E. Adams and Robert L. Adams, both of Ontelaunee Township; and three daughters: Ruth A. Adams, Muhlenberg Township; Rosemary N. (Adams) Heffner, Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County; and Rita S. Adams, Lincoln Park, N.J. There are also nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The Leibensperger Funeral Home, Hamburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Adams, Anna F.

Anna F. Adams, 91, a resident of Luther Acres, Lititz, Lancaster County, since 1987, formerly of West Wyomissing, died Aug. 9 at 10:20 a.m. in LutherCare, Lititz. Her husband, Harry A. Adams, died in 1953. Born in Knauers, she was a daughter of the late Walter E. and Frances (Zinn) Fitterling. Adams was employed by Hope Hosiery, Adamstown, and was last employed as a seamstress by Betty's Bridal, Robesonia. She was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, Swartzville, Lancaster County. Adams was a past chaplain of the ladies auxiliary of the Adamstown Veterans of Foreign Wars post. Surviving is a son, James A., Reinholds. Other survivors include a brother, Richard S. Fitterling, Adamstown. There are also eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons, John and Frederick Adams. Memorial services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Luther Acres. Inurnment will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Adamstown. The Good Funeral Home & Cremation Centre Inc., Reamstown, Lancaster County, is in charge of arrangements.

Adams, David

The funeral of David Adams, Shamrock, was held at Longswamp church on Wednesday. Mr. Adams was a son of Daniel Adams and wife Leah (Rishel) and was born in Longswamp on January 26, 1844. He was baptized by Rev. Jeremiah Schindel on March 9, 1844. The parents were sponsors. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Longswamp by Rev. E. H. Sell on May 25, 1866. He was joined in marriage to Sarah Anna Long on June 10, 1871, at Fogelsville by Rev. William T. Helfrich, D.D. Two sons, Samuel N. and Amandus, died young.

The deceased was a farmer south of Mertztown for many years. Upon the death of his wife he made his home with an adopted daughters, Alice Eck, now wife of John O. Reinert, of this place, where he was tenderly cared for during his prolonged illness.

He passed away on Thursday, October 18, aged 84 years, 8 months and 22 days. There survive two brothers, Irvin, Mahanoy City, and Joseph, Reading.

Adams, David D.

David D. Adams, retired grocer, died Saturday in his home, 476 W. Oley St., Reading, following a lingering illness. He was 70. A native of Macungie, Lehigh county, he was a son of the late Joel and Maria (Folk) Adams. He was a member of the Reformed congregation of Longswamp Union church, and Tox-E-Lox tribe, Independent Order of Red Men, Alburtis. He leaves his wife, the former Katie Hilbert; two daughters, Elsie, wife of Wellington Brady, Reading, and Clara, at home; one son, David D., West Reading; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one step-brother, Frank Weaver, Emmaus. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon in Reading.

Adams, Donald R.

Services will be held June 18, 1:30 p.m. in Salem Bellemans Union Church, Centre Township, for Donald R. Adams, 72, of Hafer Drive, Leesport, who died June 14 in Reading Hospital, where he had been a patient since May 23. Burial will be in Fairview (Bellemans) Cemetery. He was the husband of June M. (Kreider) Adams. Born in Tilden Township, he was a son of the late Oscar W. and Ella M. (Potteiger) Adams. Until retiring in 1994, he was employed by Quaker Maid Kitchens, Ontelaunee Township, for 17 years, and was also employed as a spray painter by Degler Chevrolet, Kutztown; Kutztown Airport; and Reading Aviation. Adams was a Korean War Army veteran. He was a member of Salem (Bellemans) Church, Centre Township and vice president of the Centerport Sunday School. Adams was a charter member of the Central Berks Fire Company. Surviving are three brothers, Quentin C. Adams, Shoemakersville; Richard L. Adams, Tilden Township; and Larry D. Adams, Pottsville. There are also three sisters: Arlene V. (Adams) Heffner, Shoemakersville; Audrey L. (Adams) Schorr, Concord. N.C.; and Sharon A. (Adams) Ende, in Wisconsin. Adams, Ella (nee Fritch)

Mrs. Ella (Fritch) Adams of 507 Turner St., Allentown, died yesterday in the Hamilton Convalescent Home, Allentown. She was 77. Born in Mertztown, she was a daughter of the late Levi and Sarah (Miller) Fritch. She was a member of Zions United Church of Christ, Allentown. Surviving with her husband, Harry P. Adams, are a son, Harry F., of Allentown; a daughter, Helen, wife of Warren Brewen of Allentown; two sisters, Helen, wife of Harry C. Keck, and Melrose, wife of Louis Shoemaker, all of Mertztown; two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The J. S. Erwin Adams, of 65 S. 2nd St., Emmaus, the oldest male resident of that borough, died at his home yesterday, aged 90 years, 6 months and 23 days. He had been confined to his home since January, and was bedfast for the last three months. Born in Berks county, the son of Daniel and Leah, nee Rishel, Adams, he was a painter by trade, working in Mahanoy City for 20 years. He had lived retired in Emmaus for the past 20 years. He was a member of the Reformed wing of the Longswamp church. He is survived by one daughter, Rachael Adams, of Macungie; one brother, Elmer Adams, of Emmaus, six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services for Mrs. Florence M. Adams, 70, of 124 Woodrow Ave., Sinking Spring, who died Saturday night in the Wyomissing Lodge, Reading, will be held on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Raymond S. Wolfgang will officiate in the Lamm & Witman Funeral Home, Wernersville. Burial will be made in Aulenbach's Cemetery. Born in Krumsville, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Polly (Fenstermacher) Tyson. Her husband, Irvin M. Adams, died Jan. 27, 1934. Mrs. Adams was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ and its guild. Surviving are five sons: Warren L., Kenhorst; Herman C., Sinking Spring; Lester P., Wernersville; Junior I., Rehrersburg and Kenneth A., Lincoln Park. A daughter, Fern M., widow of Titus Summers, Montrose Manor, and two stepdaughters, Kathryn M., wife of Harvey Steely, Stevens, and Marie C., wife of Wallace Oakes, Sinking Spring: 27 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. A brother, Edgar Tyson, Kutztown and four sisters: Ellen, widow of Bert Kunkle, and Mercy, widow of Edgar Roth, both of Kutztown; Lillian, widow of Lewis Smith, Krumsville, and Elsie, wife of Wert Reinhard, Kempton.

Services were held for George I. Adams, 91, who died March 17 in his residence on Butter Lane, Exeter Township. He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy D. (Wanner) Adams, in 1982, and by his second wife, Lilla A. (Breitenstein) Adams in 1997. Born in Reading, Adams was employed as a knitter by Berkshire Knitting Mills, Wyomissing, and was last employed as an inspector by Textile Machine Works, Wyomissing, retiring in 1977. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Adams was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church, Reiffton. Surviving is a son, I. James, Wyoming, Del. Other survivors include a sister; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Burial was in Charles Evans Cemetery. The arrangements were handled by the Lutz Funeral Home Inc., Mount Penn.

Adams, Harold G.

Harold Guy Adams Sr., 70, died of natural causes April 11 in his residence in Muhlenberg Township. His wife, Rita Ellen (Clinton) Adams, died Dec. 5. Born in Laureldale, he was a son of the late Ray W. and Emma (Suader) Adams. Adams was employed for several years in the warehouse by Textile Chemical Corp., Ontelaunee Township, retiring in 1998. Surviving are a daughter, Susan E. (Adams) Rollman, Reading; and two sons, Harold G. Jr., Macungie, Lehigh County, and Gerald A., Muhlenberg Township. Other survivors include nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sons, Ronald R. Adams, in 1963 and Ricky J. Adams, in 1993. Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the Walter R. Christ Funeral Home Inc., Laureldale. Burial will be in Good Shepherd Cemetery, Tuckerton.

Harold L. Adams, 80, Kutztown, died June 26 at 8 p.m. in Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown, where he had been a patient four days. He was the husband of Beulah I. (Houptley) Adams. Born in Maxatawny Township, he was a son of the late Solomon W. and Bertha M. (Herbein) Adams. Adams was employed for 20 years as a foundry moulder by Caloric Corp., Topton, and by Boyertown Foundry. He was last employed for seven years as a custodian by the Fleetwood School District, last working in 1990. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Kutztown. Adams was a Navy veteran of World War II. He is also survived by a son, Ronald H., Groton, Mass. Other survivors include a sister, Anna W. (Adams) Warmkessel, Kutztown. There are also two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Ludwick Funeral Homes Inc., Kutztown. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Kutztown.

Harry A. Adams, 39, of 2314 Jefferson Ave., West Wyomissing, died yesterday three hours after admission to the Reading Hospital. He had been stricken ill while at work| in the Reading plant-of the Diener Knitting Mills, Inc. of West Leesport, where he was employed as a cutter. Dr. Paul D. Good, coroner, ordered an autopsy before issuing a certificate. Adams was a son of the late lrvin M. and Ida (Mover) Adams, and was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church. Surviving are his widow, Anna (Fitterling) Adams; two sons: Frederick and James, both at home: his stepmother, Mrs. Florence (Tyson) Adams, of Sinking Spring; three sisters: Catherine, wife of Harvey Steely, of Stevens; Marie, wife of Wallace Oaks, Sinking Spring, and Fern, wife of Titus Summers, Gouglersville: and five brothers: Warren and Herman, both of Sinking Spring; Lester, Wernersville; Junior, of Lebanon, and Kenneth, in the Army in Korea. Services Tuesday at 2 p. m. in the Lamm and Witman Funeral Home, Wernersville, the Rev. Frank A. Rosenberger and the Rev. David J. W. Noll officiating. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Adamstown.

Adams, Ida

Ida, wife of Edward Adams died on Thursday at the home of her father Henry Romich, near Worman. She had been ill only a short time, with pneumonia. Her age was 18 years, 2 months and 26 days. She was married several months ago, but still lived with her parents. The funeral will take place next Tuesday morning. Interment in Boyertown. The father Henry Romich is also very ill. He is a son of Jere Romich of Boyertown.

Adams, Ida

The funeral of Ida, wife of Edward Adams, of near Greshville, on Tuesday was largely attended. She was the daughter of Henry Romich and granddaughter of Jeremiah Romich of this place. Deceased was 18 years, 2 months and 26 days. She leaves a husband and a small child. Her father being sick with pneumonia was unable to attend the funeral. The corpse was attired in her wedding dress. Rev. A.M. Weber officiated and Brumbach & Co. was in charge.

West Reading, Jan. 25 (Special); A cold, which developed into pneumonia, caused the death of Ida (nee Moyer), wife of Irvin Adams, 110 Yarnell street, after an illness of but two days. Her age was 22 years, 10 months, and 23 days. Deceased is survived by her husband and three children: Harry, Catherine and Marie; her mother, Mrs. Emma Moyer (nee Hinsley), and one brother Le Roy Moyer all at home. She was born at Lyons, the daughter of Charles and Emma Moyer. Mrs. Adams was a member of St. Paul's Reformed Church. Undertaker Auman, of Reading, has charge.

Services were held in the Leibensperger Funeral Home, Hamburg, for Irene M. Adams, 90, formerly of West State Street, Hamburg, who died April 6 in the Berks Heim Annex, where she had been a resident since April 15, 1997. Burial was in St. Michael's Cemetery, Tilden Township. She was predeceased by her husband, James A. Adams, who died Oct. 30, 1997. Born in Upper Bern Township, she was a daughter of the late Francis and Mamie (Haas) Rentschler. Until retiring in 1992, she was employed in the cafeteria of Hamburg High School for 20 years. She was a life member of the Women of the Moose, Hamburg. Adams was a member of Frieden's Lutheran Church, Bernville. Surviving are a son, Eugene J. Adams, Hamburg; a daughter, Shirley E. (Adams) Flammer, Edenburg; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Other survivors include a brother, Dennis Rentschler, Robesonia, and a sister, Kathryn (Rentschler) Spengler, Strausstown.

There survive his widow, Florence (Tyson) Adams; these children: Katherine, wife of Harvey Steeley, Stevens, Harry, Marie, Fern, Warren, Herman, Esther [sic. should be Lester], Junior and Kenneth at home; also a stepsister, Mrs. Roy Oxenrider, Neffsville. Adams, Lee F.Sr.

Retired Minister. Services were held in the Wesley UM Church. The Rev. Lee Frederick Adams Sr., a retired United Methodist minister, died March 7 in St. Joseph Medical Center, where he had been a patient since Feb. 20. Burial was in Good Shepherd Cemetery, Tuckerton. Adams, formerly of Reiffton, was the husband of Marian V. (Spatz) Adams. Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Fred and Annie (Heffner) Adams. He was a graduate of Fleetwood High School, where he lettered in four sports and was basketball captain. He also ran in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. He graduated from Albright College in 1949, and was accepted into the Philadelphia Conference of the Methodist Church in 1951. He was a 1952 graduate of the United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio, with a master of divinity degree. He was pastor of the Wesley UM Church, Reading, for 11 years until his retirement in 1983. Prior to his ministry at the Reading church, Adams' pastoral duties included assignments in Geigertown, Morgantown, Pottstown, Lehighton, Parryville, Schuylkill Haven, Langhorne, Narberth and Philadelphia. In 1984 he served as interim pastor at Christ UM Church, Birdsboro. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Adams was a former chaplain at Wernersville State Hospital. In 1963 he was honored by the Chapel of the Four Chaplains for outstanding community service. Adams wrote a weekly sports column for the Kutztown Patriot. Adams was a member of Holy Cross Memorial UM Church, Reading. He is also survived by two sons, the Rev. Lee F. Jr., Royersford, Montgomery County, and Larry K.B., Reiffton. There are two grandchildren. Other survivors include three sisters: Ruth (Adams) Heffley, Edgewater, Fla.; Janet (Adams) Burns, Fleetwood; and Dorothy (Adams) Peters, Oley. Menno Adams, of near Alburtis, died Sunday morning of typhoid fever, aged 64 years. Adams, of Forge Dam Road, Upper Bern Township, who died Aug. 7 in Reading Hospital, where he had been a patient two days. Burial was in Frieden's Cemetery, Shartlesville. Born in Upper Bern Township, he was a son of the late Lewis M. and Ada D. (Henne) Adams. Until retiring in 1992, he was employed as a cook by Haag's Hotel, Shartlesville, for 32 years. He was a former driver for the Shartlesville Fire Company. Surviving are Arlene G. (Smith) Brown, with whom he resided; a son, Thomas T. Adams, Upper Bern Township; and three daughters: Marjory A. (Adams) Groft, Bernville; Audra A. (Adams) Sonday, Pine Grove, Schuylkill County; and Carla J. (Adams) Dougherty, Tilden Township. There are also six grandchildren and a brother, Earl M. Sandra A. Adams, 65, of 221 Sycamore Road, West Reading, died Thursday at Reading Hospital, where she had been admitted earlier that day. Born in Berks County, she was the daughter of the late Chester B. and Arleen Jacoby Rodrian. She was a 1947 graduate of Reading High School. She had been employed as a secretary at the Kesher Zion Synagogue for many years and for five years by the March of Dimes, last working Tuesday. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Kutztown. Surviving are three stepsisters, Betty A. Reed, Pottsville, Ruth A. Marx, Harrisburg, Nancy L. Guzick, Port Carbon; a stepbrother, John C. Rodrian, Saint Clair. Services will be private. Interment will be in Laureldale Cemetery, Tuckerton. Auman Funeral Home, Reading, is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley J. Adams, 68, Perry Township, died of natural causes June 27 at 6:25 a.m. in Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, where she had been a patient three days. She was the wife of Elmer M. Adams. Born in Windsor Township, she was a daughter of the late George and Estella (Koenig) Berger. Adams was employed for 42 years as a machine operator by Crown Knitting Mill, Mohrsville, and was last employed for four years as a machine operator by Spring-Ford Mills, Leesport, retiring in 2002. She was a member of St. Michael's Church, Tilden Township. Adams is also survived by two sons, Larry K., Mohrsville, and Lyle L., Shoemakersville. Other survivors include two sisters, Ruth (Berger) DeLong, Hamburg, and Pauline (Berger) Lerch, Leesport. There are also two grandchildren. Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Burkey & Driscoll Funeral Home, Hamburg. Burial will be in Leesport Cemetery, Ontelaunee Township.

Joint funeral services will be held in St. John's Lutheran Church, Kutztown, at 2 p.m. Wednesday for Mr. and Mrs. Solomon W. Adams, 28 E. Smith St., Topton. Adams died Wednesday and his wife, Bertha, died yesterday morning. Mrs. Adams, 66, was born in Kutztown and was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Herbein. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Kutztown. Adams, who died on his 69th birthday in Reading Hospital, was born in Maxatawny Township, Berks County, a son of the late Henry and Annie (Wink) Adams. He was a molder at M & M Foundry, Hamburg, for the last 17 years. Surviving are four sons, Donald, Yellow House; Paul, Boyertown; Harold and Bowers, both at home; five daughters, Mabel, wife of Melvin Grimes, West Lawn; Anna, wife of Lester Warmkessel, Kutztown; Ruth, wife of Claude Dorward, Macungie; Betty, wife of Albert Eschbach, Kutztown; Jane, wife of Sharon Greenwalt, Allentown; 28 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Adams, Stella (nee Schadler)

Mrs. Stella Adams, 79, of 4920 Kutztown Road, Temple, Berks County, widow of James A. Adams, died yesterday in the Reinmiller Convalescent Home, Emmaus. She was born in Red Lion, Berks County, a daughter of the late William and Theresa (Stauffer) Schadler. She lived in Allentown prior to moving to Temple several months ago. Mrs. Adams at one time was manager of Schadler's bakery in Emmaus and later was employed as a cook by the Hamilton Convalescent Home, Allentown. She retired four years ago. She was a member of Longswamp United Church of Christ. Surviving are four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Trexler Funeral Home, 1625 Highland St., Allentown. Viewing will be 7-8:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Mary Jane Addis, 85, Exeter Township, died May 27 at 4 p.m. in St. Joseph Medical Center, where she had been a patient for four days. She was the wife of F. Robert Addis. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late James M. and Mary (Eshleman) Bitler. Addis was a member of Community United Church of Christ, St. Lawrence. She was a 1937 graduate of Reading High School. Addis is also survived by a son, Robert J., Douglassville, and a daughter, Carol J. (Addis) Haines, Palmyra, Lebanon County. There are also four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Henninger Funeral Home Inc. Burial will be in St. John's (Hain's) Church Cemetery, Lower Heidelberg Township.

Ahn, Hettie (nee DeLong)

Hettie, wife of Solomon Ahn (nee DeLong), died on Monday at 6 a.m. of dropsy of the heart, aged 74 years, at her home in Topton. Her death came rather unexpected, after having been in feeble health the past year. The following brothers and sisters remain: Ephraim DeLong, of Allentown; Alvin DeLong, of Indiana; Mrs. Susan Brandt, of Frankfort, Ind.; Mrs. Helena Siegfried, of Indiana; Mrs. Harrison Fegely, of Rockland; Joel DeLong, of Schnecksville. Her husband and the following children also survive: William of Free Hall, Longswamp; Mrs. Solomon Helbert of Shamrock; Mrs. Orlando Eck, of Oreville; Charles of Kutztown; John, of Circleville, Ohio; Jacob, of Topton, and Edwin, of shamrock. Deceased was a member of St. John's Reformed congregation, of Kutztown.

Ahn, John M. son of James and Catharine (Mengel) Ahn, was born Nov. 8, 1835 in Richmond township. Baptised by Rev. Geo. Roeller. Confirmed in 1855 in Ziegel Congregation by Rev. Yeager. Married Mar. 10, 1860 to Rebecca Spengler by Rev. Jacob D. Zehring, which union was blessed with 2 sons & 1 daughter, of whom one son only remains, with his mother, to mourn his death, which came Mar. 8, 1906, at Strausstown, aged 70 years 4 months.

Ahn, Rebecca (nee Spangler)

Strausstown, Feb. 17. - Rebecca (nee Spangler), widow of John M. Ahn, who preceded her in death 17 years, died of paralysis of the heart at the home of her only son, Jacob S., at this place, aged 78 years and 29 days. She was the last of her immediate family and leaves, besides her son, Jacob S., three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral, Saturday afternoon, Feb. 21, from her son's home in town at 2 o'clock. Services and interment at Zion's Blue Mountain Church. Rev. Frank W. Ruth will officiate. C. V. Reber, undertaker, has charge.

Ahn, Solomon

Solomon Ahn died on Sunday night at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Sarah Eck, No. 124 South Tenth street, after a nine weeks' illness with dropsy. The deceased was born in Maxatawny township, Berks county, and was 80 years of age. He was a farmer by occupation, but retired some years ago. Six months ago he moved to Allentown, and took up his residence with his sister. The following children survive: Mrs. Sarah Eck and Edward Ahn, of Allentown; William, Charles and Jacob Ahn, of Topton; Mrs. Solomon Hilbert, Shamrock, and John Ahn, of Ohio. Twenty-two grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren also survive. The funeral will take place on Wednesday. The remains will be taken to Kutztown, where Rev. Leinbach will conduct the services.

William L. Ahn died at his home in Alburtis on Monday evening at 8.50 of complications after an illness of six weeks, aged 72 years. He was a farmer, and was born in Maxatawny township, a son of the late Solomon and Hettie, nee DeLong, Ahn. He was a member of the Lutheran church at Bowers. There survive his wife, Ellen, nee Becker, and the following children: Mrs. Lorenda Dankel and Edna, at home; Irwin, of Alburtis; seven grandchildren, and these brothers and sisters: John, of Circleville, O.; Jacob and Edwin, of Allentown; Mrs. Solomon Helbert, of Lyons, and Mrs. Lando Eck, of Topton. The funeral will be held on Saturday morning at 9.30.

Services will be held June 20, 1 p.m. in the Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Laureldale, for Blanche M. Ahrens, who died June 16 in the residence of a son, Richard K. Ahrens, Allentown Pike, Maidencreek Township. Burial will be in Maidencreek Cemetery, Blandon. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold A. Ahrens, who died Feb. 9, 1980. Born in Maidencreek Township, she was a daughter of the late Herman S. and Florence E. (Rothermel) Groh. She was a charter member of the Blandon Lioness Club and a 50-year member of Reading Chapter 251, Order of the Eastern Star. Ahrens was a member of Maidencreek Church, Blandon, where she was a choir member. Also surviving are another son, Raymond A. Ahrens, Rockland Township; four granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

Aipel, John

John "Jack" Aipel, 71, a lifelong resident of Bucks County, died May 22, 2003 in his home. He was the husband of Joan (Dudley) Aipel. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Lewis and Harriet K. (MacMenamin) Aipel. He was a technical sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving on the front lines in Korea. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, John Peter Aipel of New Hope; one daughter, Carol A. Lloyd of Bedminster; one brother, Stephen in Florida; and two grandchildren. A memorial service was held for Sharon D. Aker, 37, of North Walnut Street, Boyertown, who died January 29 in her home. Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of Ralph and Diane W. (Specht) Aker of Perkiomen. She was employed as a scanning coordinator at Redner's Market in Douglassville until illness forced her retirement in 2000. She is survived by two daughters, Jessica Maute and Elizabeth Maute, both of Boyertown; and a son, Harvey Maute of Boyertown. She was predeceased by a sister, Sherri L. Knopf. Services over the remains of Mary, daughter of Paul and Marguerite Albert, 610 North 13th, were conducted in St. Paul's Catholic Church by Rev. Father Michel. The remains were attired in a white dress, and reposed in a white plush casket. Interment in Catholic Cemetery. Funeral director Francis F. Seidel.

Dorothy E. Barrell Albitz, 88, Exeter Township, died Aug. 18 at 6:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Medical Center, where she had been a patient 12 days. She was predeceased by her first husband, Charles D. Barrell, on Jan. 7, 1962, and by her second husband, Charles F. Albitz, on July 31, 1993. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Clayton and Ethel (Angstadt) Schaeffer. Albitz was employed for 25 years as a sewing machine operator by Dolfin Corp., Shillington, retiring in 1981. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Mount Penn. Surviving are two daughters, Patricia L. (Diehm) Wool, Sinking Spring, and Carole J. (Barrell) Struble, Exeter Township. Other survivors include two stepsons, Robert Albitz, Pottstown, and Leonard Albitz, Gilbertsville; and a stepdaughter, Maryanne (Albitz) Samuels, Pottstown. There are also 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. in the Lutz Funeral Home Inc., Mount Penn. Burial will be in Charles Evans Cemetery.

Raymond G. Albitz, 76, of Barto R. 1, died Monday in the Pottstown Medical Center. He was the husband of Luella N. (Ruppert) Albitz. He was supervisor in Hereford Township for 22 years before retiring in 1974, and secretary-treasurer for many years during his term. He was a self-employed farmer, retiring in 1976. Born in Hereford Township, he was a son fo the late Alvin V. and Eva S. (Gery) Albitz. He was a member of St. John's Hill United Church of Christ, Boyertown R. 4, and served on the church consistory for 12 years. He was an organist at Huff's Union Church, Barto R. 1, for 24 years. Surviving with his widow are three sons, Harold P. and Herman C., both of Barto R. 1, and Donald A., at home; a daughter, Helen M., wife of Clarence C. Mensch of barto, and eight grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the Losh Funeral Home, 124 W. Philadelphia Ave., Boyertown. Calling hours will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Albitz, Thomas A.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Bally Mennonite Church, Rte. 100, Bally, for Thomas A. Albitz, 46, Boyertown. He was a son of Julia Albitz, Boyertown and James Albitz, Emmaus. Albitz died at his residence in Boyertown. He had previously been employed by Boyertown Packaging. Albitz is also survived by two daughters: Jennifer Albitz, Barto; Liana Albitz of Coatesville; and a son, Derick Albitz of Coatesville. Also three brothers, John Albitz, Boyertown; Joseph Albitz (unknown); and David Albitz, Bally; also a sister, Kathleen Krepp of Bally. He was predeceased by a brother, Michael Albitz. The arrangements were handled by the Cremation Society of Pennsylvania, King of Prussia, PA. 19406.

Albright, Charles

Gen. Charles Albright, a leading lawyer of Mauch Chunk, Penn., died yesterday morning of paralysis. He was born in Berks County, Penn., Dec. 13, 1830, and received his education at Dickinson College. After preliminary legal studies he was admitted to the Bar in 1852. He spent a year or two in Kansas, and returned to Pennsylvania in 1856. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1860. Soon after the breaking out of the war he entered the Army, and was commissioned as Colonel, commanding the Third Brigade, at Chancellorsville. He was later in command of Camp Muhlenberg, Pennsylvania, to organize troops. He assisted in July, in the draft at Philadelphia. he had an independent command, in September, 1864, in the protection of the railroads and out defenses of Washington. In March, 1865, he was made a Brevet Brigadier-General of Volunteers. He had charge, after the war, of the Lehigh military district, assisting in pacifying the mining tumults. His military career ended in 1865, when he was mustered out of the service. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention, at Philadelphia, in 1872, and was elected to the Forty-third Congress, serving on the Committee on Military Affairs.

Services were held for Clarence R. Albright, 65, of Cross Road, Gilbertsville, who died March 19 in his home. He was the husband of Margie L. (Correll) Albright. Born in Pottstown to Minnie (Miller) Albright of North Coventry and the late Isaac Albright. For 36 years, Albright worked as a maintenance mechanic for the former Stanley G. Flagg plant in Stowe, and in 2001, retired from Dana Corp. An Army veteran, Albright was a member of the Pikeville Sportsman's Association. He was also a life member of the West End Fire Company in Stowe. In addition to his wife and mother, Albright is survived by a daughter, Sherry (Albright) Landfried of Dacula, Ga.; two sons, Timothy Albright of Drums and Jason Albright of St. Mary's; one stepson, Bruce H. Gehris of Pottstown. Also two sisters; seven brothers and eight grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Pottstown and Vicinity/Hospice, 1963 E. High St., Pottstown, PA 19464. Burial was in Hill Church Cemetery in Pike Township, Berks County. The arrangements were handled by the Catagnus Funeral Home, Boyertown.

Services were held for Catherine Alderman, 56, who died January 2 in her residence on North Kelly Drive, Birdsboro. She was the wife of Albert H. Alderman. Born in Troy, N.Y., she was a daughter of Anthony D'Agostino, Troy, and the late Catherine (Shevlin) D'Agostino. Alderman was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Birdsboro. She is also survived by two sons, John D., Frederick, Md., and Scott A., Richford, Vt.; and a daughter, Gina M. (Alderman) Scully, Grafton, N.Y. Other survivors include six grandchildren. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery, Troy. The Dengler Funeral Home, Inc., Birdsboro, was in charge of local arrangements and the Howard B. Tate & Sons Funeral Home Inc., Troy were in charge of burial arrangements.

James O. Alexander, aged 69 years, died on Saturday night at his home near Mertztown from a complication of diseases. Mr. Alexander was the son of the late William and Sarah (nee Batz) Alexander and was born in Rockland township, Berks county. He was a member of the Longswamp Lutheran church. He is survived by his wife, Sallie, nee Druckenmiller; two sons, Benjamin, of Topton, and James, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Emanuel Weller, Mertztown R.D., and Phoebe, at home; a brother, Allen Alexander, of Norristown, and Samuel Alexander, of West Coplay. Fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive. The funeral will be held from his late home near Mertztown on Thursday at 1.30 p.m. Further services will be held in the Longswamp church with interment in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Alexander, Warren

Warren, son of James and Sarah, nee Miller, Alexander, died of pneumonia yesterday morning at the residence of his parents at Mertztown. He was 10 months and 21 days of age. Besides his parents, the child is survived by two brothers, Clarence and Lester Alexander, at home, and by the maternal and paternal grandparents. The funeral will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 1 o�clock at the home of his parents. All services will be at the house, in charge of Rev. William F. Bond. Interment will be made in Huff�s church cemetery.

The remains of Warren M., infant son of James and Sarah (Miller) Alexander, Mertztown, after all services at the home, was laid to rest in the New Union cemetery at Huff's Church on Wednesday, January 20. The child was born February 26, 1931, and baptized by Rev. W. F. Bond, the mother having been sponsor. He suffered with pneumonia and died on Sunday, January 17, aged 10 months and 21 days. Surviving are both parents, the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James O. Alexander, and Mr. and Mrs. Morris M. Miller, of Longsdale, and two brothers, Clarence and Lester, at home.

Born in Wernersville, he was a son of the late Brady and Flossie (Boltz) Allen. Allen had been employed for 25 years as a driver salesman by Hershey Creamery Co., Allentown, retiring in 1979. He was a member of Community Evangelical Church, Sinking Spring. Allen was a 1941 graduate of Sinking Spring High School. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. Allen is also survived by three daughters: Janet C. (Allen) Reese, Grill; Christie C. (Allen) Ravert, Robesonia; and Phyllis E. (Allen) Calvano, Haymarket, Va. Other survivors include a brother, Dean A., Wernersville; and three sisters: Kathleen J. (Allen) Druckenmiller, Myerstown, Lebanon County; Lucille (Allen) Welder, Temple; and Marjorie F. (Allen) Moyer, Mountain Top, Luzerne County. There are also 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in Lamm & Witman Funeral Home Inc., Wernersville. Louise E. Allushuski, 2623 Garfield Ave., West Wyomissing, died Tuesday at Berks Heim, where she was a patient since Nov. 6. Born in Crailsheim, Germany, she was a daughter of the late Conrad and Anna Berhalter Irion. Her father was born in Shenandoah and raised in Girardville. She was a bus driver for the Wilson School District for 10 years and for the Schuylkill Valley School District for 22 years, retiring in 1988. She was a member of Advent Lutheran Church, West Lawn. Her husband, William J., died Jan. 10, 1996. Surviving are four sons, William J. Jr., Wernersville, Michael J.C., James R. and Terrence B., all of Spring Township; a daughter, Susan L. Robert R. Alspach Jr., 73, former Berks automobile shop owner and hill-climb standout, died July 18 at 4:45 p.m. in the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice at St. Luke's Hospital, Bethlehem. Alspach, of Fogelsville, Lehigh County, formerly of Reading, was the husband of Dr. Patricia Mary Enzman. Born in West Reading, he was a son of the late Robert R. Sr. and Florence (Schaeffer) Alspach. Alspach was the owner of Alspach Auto Service, Cumru Township, for 33 years, where he worked as an automobile mechanic, retiring in 2001. He was a graduate of Reading High School. Alspach was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Active in local motor sports, Alspach holds several records with the Pennsylvania Hill Climb Association and placed first numerous times at the Reading Duryea Hill Climb. Alspach is also survived by a son, Paul R., at home; and two daughters, Susan L. Alspach, Auburn, Schuylkill County, and Deborah K. (Alspach) Pellicotti, Reading. Other survivors include a brother, David, Reading. There are also three grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Michael, in 1959. Services will be private. Services will be held for Allen Bertolet Althouse, 84, of West First Street, Birdsboro, who died April 3 in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center. He was the husband of Helen L. (Massey) Althouse. Born in Baumstown, he graduated from the former Birdsboro High School in 1936. He worked as a pattern maker for 26 years for the former Birdsboro Corp. before retiring in 1982. He was also a zoning code enforcement officer in Birdsboro from 1972 to 1984. Althouse served on the Birdsboro Zoning Hearing Board from 1984 to 2003. He was a member of Union Masonic Lodge No. 479 of Birdsboro and a past president of the Birdsboro Alumni Association. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Robert Allen Althouse of Douglassville and John H. Althouse of Exeter; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by a daughter. Evelyn M. Althouse, 87, Old River Road, Marietta, formerly 35 E. Queen Street, Ephrata, passed peacefully at Longwood Manor, Maytown, Dec. 30. She was the wife of Raymond D. Althouse, who died Dec., 2001. Born in Berks County, Evelyn was the daughter of Eva Engelder Keith and Harry Keith. She was an Ephrata businesswoman, a member of the Soroptimist Club, and an active member of the community. Later, she volunteered at the Cloister, Ephrata. Evelyn was proud of her Pa. German heritage and became an avid student. She learned many folk crafts including crewel, fraktur, spinning, weaving, dyeing, cornhusk, scherenshnitte, and egg scratching. She spoke Pa. German fluently. She also worked at Landis Valley Farm Museum as the "egg-scratcher." Her intricately scratched, onionskin-dyed eggs were featured in the magazines "Spinning Wheel" and "Colonial Homes". Several of her eggs are in a museum in Europe. Evelyn had been an active member in the United Brethren Church in Ephrata, and also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with her late husband, Raymond. Surviving is a daughter, Judith Starr, wife of Rigo Vannucci, Texas, and a son, John Shober, husband of Theresa Shober, Marietta, with whom she resided. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley, wife of Leroy Wentzel, Stevens. There are fivegrandchildren and a surviving sister, Loretta Bates, Reinholds. Evelyn will be buried next to her husband, Raymond, at the Salem Berne United Methodist Church, Hamburg. George W. Althouse, 92, former Mohnton postmaster, died July 15 in his Fort Myers, Fla., residence. Althouse, a former resident of Mohnton, had been predeceased by his wife, Madelon (Schnell) Althouse. He was also predeceased by his first wife, Louise (Vetter) Althouse, and by his second wife, Leah (Schaub Bellman) Althouse. Born in Leesport, he was a son of the late William D. Sr. and Effa N. (Rahn) Althouse. Althouse had been employed for 29 years by the United State Postal Service, retiring as postmaster of the Mohnton facility in 1972. He previously worked as an inspector for the Pennsylvania Highway Department and in the metallurgy department of Carpenter Technology Corp., Reading. Althouse was past president of the Berks County Postmasters Association. He served as the first president of the Mohnton Recreation Association, and was a former school director and justice of the peace in Cumru Township. Althouse was a life member of the Fort Myers Lions Club and a charter member of the Mohnton Lions Club. He was a member of Cypress Lake United Methodist Church and an associate member of The Chapel of Cypress Cove, both in Fort Myers. Althouse is survived by two sons, George L., East Greenville, Montgomery County, and Rev. Ted, Fort Myers. Other survivors include two stepdaughters, Joyce Kloc, Needles, Calif., and Karen Angel, Worcester, Mass.; and a brother, Harry N., Hamburg. There are also seven grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in The Chapel of Cypress Cove. Graveside services will be held at a later date in St. John's (Hain's) Church Cemetery, Lower Heidelberg Township. The National Cremation Society, Fort Myers, is in charge of arrangements.

Althouse, 46, North Main Street, Bernville, who was pronounced dead Nov. 10 in a car in a field along Bootleg Road, Penn Township. He died of carbon monoxide poisoning and a certificate of suicide was issued by the Berks County coroner's office. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Denver. Born in Ephrata, he was a son of Kenneth P. Althouse, Denver, and the late Doris (Good) Althouse. He was employed as an acrylic-siding installer by Mark Weaver, Denver. She was a charter member of Central Berks Fire Co. No. 1, Centerport, and a life member of the Shartlesville Fire Co. Surviving are two sons: Norman L. Becker, Hamburg and Ray W. Althouse, Mohrsville RD 1; a daughter, Eleanor E. Ohlinger, Reading; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also three brothers Morris F and Lawrence H. Born in Shoemakersville, Berks County, she was a daughter of the late John A. and Ellen Springer. She attended schools in Shoemakersville, and later received her elementary teacher's certificate teaching in Shoemakersville for several years. She was last employed by the former Boltz Knitting Mills, retiring in 1992. She was of the Protestant faith. Surviving are two sons, David, Shenandoah, and John, Danielson, Conn.; four grandchildren.

Mrs. Lydia Ambrose, aged 32, wife of John Ambrose, of Girardville, died in St. Joseph's Hospital of blood poisoning on Monday. Deceased had been ill four months and was admitted to the hospital two months ago. When brought to this city her condition was regarded as very critical. She leaves her husband and four children. The remains were taken to Girardville by Undertaker Clark, of that place.

Amig, Edith Elizabeth

Amig, Edith Elizabeth, the daughter of the late Rev. D. F. Kostenbader and his wife, Sarah, nee Hahn, was born in Kutztown, Pa., November 20, 1899. She passed out of this life Monday, May 22, 1950, at the Allentown Hospital after only two days of illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, in 1931. Mrs. Amig was an outstanding Christian character whose life will be a memorial to her loved ones and friends in the years to come. She was a member of Christ Evangelical Congregational Church, Williams Township, and was very active in that church, being a Sunday School teacher, a Steward, and the Lay Delegate to Annual Conference for the past eight years. Two years ago she felt God called her into active work in caring for His people and became a practical nurse at the Lehigh County Home, Allentown R. 2, where she gave of her time and talent in caring for the sick, etc. Monday preceding her death, she was promoted to the position of Assistant Matron. A memorial service was held in the County Home on Wednesday evening, May 24, at which time guests and staff attended in her memory. Funeral service was held on Thursday afternoon, May 25, at the Schillinger Funeral Home, Easton, in charge of her Pastor, Rev. E. L. Ramer. Dr. E. S. Woodring offered the prayer, and the undersigned preached the sermon. Burial took place at Emmaus in charge of the writer. Left to mourn is a daughter, Mrs. Harry Schipper, Easton; two sisters, Ida Moser, Easton; Florence Setzer, Bordentown, New Jersey, and three grandchildren. Marie J. Amole, 91, formerly of Exeter Township, died May 23 at 8:40 p.m. in Berks Heim Annex, where she had been a resident since November. Her husband, Russell R. Amole, died Aug. 29, 2000. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Earl W. and Ester (High) Jackson. Amole had been employed for 25 years as a registered nurse by the Reading Rehabilitation Hospital, retiring in 1980. She was a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church, Kenhorst Boulevard, Reading. Amole is survived by a son, William R., Reading. Alma S. Anderson, 96, of Phoebe Berks Health Care Center, Wernersville, formerly of RD1 Orwigsburg, died Saturday at the facility. Born in Orwigsburg, May 22, 1907, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Nora Heister Trout. She was a 1929 graduate of Hahnemann Hospital Nursing School, Philadelphia, and a 1955 graduate of Kutztown University. She was a registered nurse working for Blue Mountain School District, Orwigsburg, for many years. She was a lifelong member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Orwigsburg, where she was a Sunday school teacher, and member of the consistory, Ladies Guild and quilters group, and a member of Eastern Star 424, Orwigsburg. Her first husband, John M. Aregood, died in 1956; her second husband, David W. Anderson, died on Dec. 10, 1989. Surviving are two sons, the Rev. John Aregood, Lebanon, Ill., and the Rev. Dr. Robert Aregood, Reading; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 16, at St. John's UCC. The Rev. Barbara Kershner will officiate. Clarence R. Anderson, 78, of 816 Walnut St., died yesterday in the Community General Hospital.

A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James R. Anderson, he had been employed for 16 years in the City of Reading's machine shop, and last had operated an automobile repairs shop on Cedar Street. Anderson, familiarly known as "Kid" was a member of the United Church of Christ, and of Reading Nest No. 2, Fraternal Order of orioles; Lodge No. 115, P. B. O. of Elks of which he was a life member and the Junior Fire Company and Reading Eagles Home Co.

Surviving are his widow Bessie V. (Miller) Anderson and a nephew and two nieces. Services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Calvin E. Seidel & Sons Funeral Home, the Rev. Dr. Frank E. Radcliffe officiating. Burial will be in Charles Evans Cemetery.

Francis A. "Andy" Anderson, 87, formerly of West Lawn, died Aug. 15 in Phoebe Berks Health Care Center Inc., Wernersville, where he had resided one month. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (Strausburger) Anderson. Anderson was born in Reading. Anderson was last employed in quality control by Lititz Candies, Reading, until his retirement. He was a graduate of Albright College and received his master's degree from Pennsylvania State University. Anderson was a life member of the Berks Institute of Art and the Art Alliance of Berks County. He was an Army veteran of World War II. There are no immediate survivors. Services will be private. Harry R. Anderson aged 50 years died of complications shortly before midnight Monday at his home, 928 Muhlenberg Street. He had been ailing for the past two years. Mr. Anderson was a native of Boyertown, a son of the late James and Laura (Reppert) Anderson and came to Reading about 30 years ago. He was employed for many years at Williamson's Laundry. Besides being a member of the Reformed denomination he was affiliated with the Reading Hose fire Company, the Reading Firemen's Relief Association, Reading Aerie No. 66, Fraternal Order of Eagles and M---- Chamber, No. 46 Knights of Malta, Mohnton. There survive his widow Sallie (Knerr) Anderson; one son Russell, at home and two brothers, Clarence and Walter Anderson, both of Reading. Funeral Director Seidel.

Her husband James Anderson, died a number of years ago. She was born in Hereford Township. Deceased was a member of the Reformed denomination. She came to this city 11 years ago. Three children remain: Harry R.; Clarence R. and Walter R. all of Reading. Four brothers survive: Albert and Edward , Reading; Charles, Alburtis and Howard E. Reppert, Greenville.

Seidel, Inc. Mrs. Anderson died last night in St. Joseph's Hospital. She resided with her son and was the widow of Harry R. Anderson, who died in 1931. Born in Bechtelsville, she was a member of the United Church of Christ. In addition to her son, she is survived by a grandson, John R. Anderson, at home, and a niece Stella Steel, Reading.

Walter R. Anderson, of 147 South Fourth Street, died this morning in the Homeopathic Hospital, aged 45 years. He followed the barber trade in this city for the past 25 years. Born in Englesville, he was a son of the late James and Laura (Reppert) Anderson. Mr. Anderson was a member of First Reformed Church, Isaac Heister Lodge, 660, F. & A. M.; Reading Consistory, Richard Coffey Commandery, 423, Knights of Malta; Elks, Neversink Fire Company, and Master Barbers' Association. He came to this city 40 years ago. Andrews, 91, of ManorCare Health Services, West Reading, formerly of Brecknock Township, RD4 Mohnton, Berks County, died late Monday afternoon at the nursing home where she lived since July 1997. Born in Tower City, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret Reise Gwyther. She was employed for 35 years as a button holer by the former Wide Awake Shirt Co., now Elbeco Inc., Muhlenberg Township, Berks County, retiring in 1972. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Reading. Her husband, William C., died in 1977. Surviving are two sons, Russell E., Pomona, Calif., and Donald, Pottsville; a daughter, Geraldine M. Her husband, Stephen, died in 1997. She had assisted him in the operation of Andruzak s Antiques for many years. She was the daughter of the late Ammon and Elizabeth Balthaser Gring and was born in Berks County. She was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ephrata. Born in Reading, Angstadt graduated in 1963 from Oley High School. He was the co-owner and operator of Pikeville Equipment in Pikeville, since 1963. Angstadt was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ in Spangsville. He was a life member of the Pike Township Sportsmans Association, the Earl Township Fire Co. and the Oley Fire Co. In addition to his wife of 24 years, he is survived by a daughter, Dina L. Angstadt of Oley; and two brothers, Donald R. Angstadt and Roger I. Angstadt, both of Oley. Eliza M., widow of Albert Angstadt, died at her home, New Jerusalem, Berks county, yesterday from a complication of diseases after a lingering illness. Mrs. Angstadt was in her 71st year. She was the daughter of the late Franklin and Marian (Fenstermacher) Conrad and was born in Upper Macungie township, Lehigh county. Her husband preceded her in death three years ago. She is survived by these children: Walter and Herbert, of Topton; Paul, at home; Mrs. Herbert Scheetz, Fleetwood; an adopted son, Raymond Hess, of Oley; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Calvin Breil, of Parkersford; Mrs. William Houck, Shoemakersville; Oliver Conrad, Pleasantville; Henry Conrad, of Laureldale. She was a member of the New Jerusalem Lutheran church. The funeral will be held from her late home on Tuesday at 1.30 p.m. Services at the house will be followed by services in the New Jerusalem church, Rev. W. F. Bond officiating. Interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Helen D. Angstadt, 80, Kutztown, died May 21 in the Hospice Unit of Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown. Her husband, Ray J. Angstadt, died in 1999. Born in Virginville, she was a daughter of the late Leon and Annie (Trexler) Moyer. Angstadt had been employed for 21 years as a secretary by Moyer's Plumbing & Heating, Kutztown, retiring in 1987. She previously worked for Heiter's Beauty Salon, Topton. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Kutztown. Angstadt was a 1943 graduate of Kutztown High School and a graduate of Henry's Academy of Beauty Culture, Allentown. She is survived by two sons, Gary J. and Jeffrey L., both of Kutztown. Other survivors include a brother, Luther Moyer, Kutztown. There are also four grandchildren. Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. John's Church. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Kutztown. Angstadt, Jacob

Jacob Angstadt, a gentleman with a large relationship throughout Lehigh and Berks, died at his home in Warren, Ohio, on the 30th of August, in his 84th year. His ailment was general debility. He was born in Kutztown, April 12th, 1801. His early life was spent in the family of John Paltzgrove, and he went with the latter to Lordstown, Trumbull Co., Ohio, in 1832. In early life he engaged in the business of carpet weaving. In 1841 he was married to a Miss Taylor, of Lordstown. He was the father of five children, three of whom survive.

John Howard Angstadt, husband of Annie M., nee Eck, Angstadt and a resident of Kutztown for many years, died Sunday at his home, 41 E. White Oak St., Kutztown. He was in his 72nd year. He had been in failing health for a year prior to his death. For 18 years Mr. Angstadt was employed as a clerk in Pennypacker's grocery store in Kutztown and prior to that was employed in the Kutztown shoe factory. He was a member of the Eagles, the Knights of the Golden Eagle and the Junior Order United American Mechanics, all of Kutztown. He was born Aug. 29, 1866, the son of the late James and Mary, nee Hering, Angstadt. Surviving are his wife, Annie M., nee Eck, Angstadt; a daughter Helen, wife of Ambrose Pennypacker, Kutztown; a son, Harry J. Angstadt, Manheim; seven grandchildren, a sister, Lizzie, widow of David James, and a brother, George P. Angstadt, all of Kutztown. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1.30 p.m. at his late home, 41 E. White Oak St., with interment in Fairview cemetery, Kutztown. Friends may call Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Services were held for Lee O. Angstadt, 72, of Long Lane Road, Oley, husband of Dorothy P. (Krause) Angstadt, who died February 11 in St. Joseph's Medical Center. Born in Pike Township, Angstadt worked as a logger for Brown and Launsburg Logging Co. in Delaware Water Gap for several years, retiring in 1968. He also worked as a deputy for the Pennsylvania State Game Commission from 1959 until retiring in 1980. He was a member of St. John Hill United Church of Christ in Pike Township. Also a life member of the Rockland Township Sportsman's Association. Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Richard L. Angstadt of Oley; and two grandchildren. Angstadt was a member of Jacob's United Church of Christ, New Tripoli, Lehigh County. She is also survived by two sons, Elam J. Jr., Fort Myers, and Howard D., Fort Myers Beach. Angstadt was a self-employed farmer, retiring in 1980. He was also employed by the Postal Service as a rural route carrier and by Beck's Feed Mill, Kutztown. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Kutztown. Surviving is a daughter, Betty M. (Angstadt) Miller, Kutztown. Other survivors include a grandson and three great-grandchildren. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Margie (Gehret) Bennethum. Angstadt had been employed for 40 years as a nurse's aide, first by Leader Personal Care Home, then Spruce Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, West Reading. She was a 1951 graduate of Reading High School. Angstadt is also survived by four daughters: Robin L. Swavely, Reading; Paula M. (Angstadt) Harris, Wernersville; Kim A. (Angstadt) Schulze, Exeter Township; and Lori A. (Angstadt) Gilyard, Aloha, Ore. Other survivors include two sisters, Fern (Bennethum) Lease, West Lawn, and Nancy (Bennethum) Sterley, Limerick, Montgomery County. There are also two grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Calvin Angstadt. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late William and Bessie (Forneff) Egelof. Angstadt had been employed as an assistant manager in the children's department of Grant's Department Store, Reading, until the store closed in 1976. She was a member of Alsace Lutheran Church, Hyde Park. Angstadt is survived by a daughter, Jane Frankhouser, Pennsburg. There are also two grandsons and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home Inc., East Greenville, Montgomery County. Burial will be in Laureldale Cemetery, Tuckerton.

Mrs. Sarah Angstadt, (nee Barr), widow of Benneville K. Angstadt, who became ill on her 84th birthday anniversary on Saturday, passed away at her home at Reading. Death was due to the infirmities of age. Mrs. Angstadt was never ill before. Her husband, who in his day was one of the leading tailors in Reading, died four years ago at the age of 84 years and 7 days, and Mrs. Angstadt always said that she would die after passing her 84th birthday. Deceased was a native of Kutztown and lived in Reading for 36 years. She was an esteemed member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. There survive her these children: Mrs. Mary E. Homan, Mrs. Sarah Ann Rhoda, W. B. Angstadt, and McClandon Angstadt, all of Reading, and Simpson A. Angstadt, of Kennett Square, Chester county; also two brothers, Franklin Barr, of Lyons, and George Barr, of Trenton, N.J.; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Annie E. Anspach, 91, formerly of Wyomissing, died Monday morning at 5:55 in Berks Heim, where she had resided since Feb. 17, 1981. She was the widow of Robert S. Anspach, who died March 25, 1954. Born in Heidelberg Township, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Sarah (Brossman) Klopp. She was a member of St. John's (Hain's) United Church of Christ, Wernersville. Surviving are five daughters: Sarah K., wife of Edward M. Messner, West Lawn, and Kathryn E., widow of Brooke Y. Fidler, Wyomissing. And Margaret A., wife of Earl H. Strouse, and pearl M., wife of George J. Marks, both of Sinking Spring and Mary E., wife of Paul M. Haag, Hamburg. Four sons: Harry A. of Shartlesville, John J. of Fleetwood, Richard I. of Sinking Spring and Robert C. of Myerstown. Also 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, a great-great-granddaughter and a sister, Katie, widow of Charles Dunkelberg, Kenhorst. Anspach, Charles J.

Charles John Anspach, 60, formerly of Myerstown, died of natural causes Aug. 22 in his Bradenton, Fla., residence where he had lived since 1988. Born in Newmanstown, Lebanon County, he was a son of Charles C. and Lillian (Boekenhauer) Anspach. Anspach owned and operated De Olde Haus, Womelsdorf, until 1970. He was also owner and operator of the Peppermill Restaurant, Lebanon and Kelly's Cafe, Newmanstown, until 1988. He was an Army veteran. Surviving are two daughters, Kelly J. (Anspach) Werner, Wernersville, and Christie (Anspach) Buckley, Bradenton; and two sons, Charles D., Myerstown, and Gregory A., Severna Park, Md. Other survivors include three sisters: Lois (Anspach) Schaab, Womelsdorf; Mary (Anspach) O'Brien, Wernersville; and Ruth (Anspach) Sherman, Ephrata. There are also eight grandchildren. Memorial services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Tulpehocken United Church of Chirst, Richland R.D.1, Lebanon County. The Bradenton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Anspach, Harry A.

Shartlesville civic leader dies at age 74: Harry A. Anspach, 74, of North Fourth Street, Shartlesville, a former civic leader in the Hamburg area, died Friday at 11:30 p.m. in Reading Hospital, where he had been a patient for three weeks. He was the husband of Arlene H. (Graff) Anspach. Anspach served two terms on the board of the Hamburg School District, and two terms as auditor for Upper Bern Township. He was a former president of the Shartlesville Fire Company and the Shartlesville Lions Club. He was a deputy district governor of the Lions. In addition, he had been secretary-treasurer of the Berks Youth League and a director of the Berks County Association for the Blind. Born in Robesonia, he was a son of the late Robert S. and Annie E. (Klopp) Anspach. He had been employed as a machinist for 27 years at the former Textile Machine Works, Wyomissing, retiring in 1977. Anspach was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the United Church of Christ congregation of Friedens Union Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Linda A., wife of Roger Hamm, Shartlesville; a son, Dennis H., Lancaster; and four grandchildren. Four sisters: Kathryn, widow of Brooke Fidler, Wyomissing; Mary, wife of Paul Haag, Berks Heim; Sarah, wife of Edward Messner, West Lawn; and Margaret, wife of Earl Strause, and Pearl, widow of George Marks, both of Sinking Spring. Anspach, John J.

John J. Anspach, 87, died June 20 at 7:16 p.m. in his residence in Wyomissing. He was the husband of Catherine E. (Williams) Anspach. Born in Robesonia, he was a son of the late Robert and Annie (Klopp) Anspach. Anspach was employed for 24 years as a pest control technician by J.C. Ehrlich Co. Inc., Spring Township, retiring in 1979. An Army veteran of World War II, he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He later served in the Army Reserves until his retirement. Anspach was a member of Advent Lutheran Church, West Lawn. He served as commander of the Oley American Legion Post 878 from 1963 to 1964. Anspach is also survived by a son, Russell J. Anspach, Sugarland, Texas; and a foster son, Michael P. Weyandt, Reading. Other survivors include three sisters: Kathryn (Anspach) Fidler, Wyomissing; and Sara (Anspach) Messner and Margaret (Anspach) Strause, both of Sinking Spring. There are also four grandchildren. He was predeceased by a foster daughter, Rose M. (Weyandt) Brown. Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the Bean Funeral Homes Inc., Sinking Spring. Burial will be in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maidencreek Township.

Anspach, Robert

Robert Anspach, ex-policeman and councilman: Robert C. Anspach, former Myerstown Borough councilman and police officer, died Tuesday afternoon in his residence at 105 Green Acres Trailer Park, Lebanon. Anspach, 67, formerly of Myerstown, was the husband of Jacqueline K. (Fuhrman) Anspach. His first wife, Jane I. (Miller) Anspach, died March 16, 1992. Born in North Heidelberg Township, he was a son of the late Robert S. and Annie E. (Klopp) Anspach. Anspach was employed from 1955 to 1984 by Quaker Alloy, Myerstown. He also was employed for more than 30 years by the Myerstown police department, where he worked both full and part time, before retiring in 1992. He was a borough councilman for two years. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, Myerstown. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Anspach is also survived by a daughter, Donna L. Porter, Lebanon, and a son, Robert S., Fredericksburg, Lebanon County. Also surviving are a stepson, John Bricker Jr., Ephrata: and four stepdaughters: Dori, wife of Grant Kllorn, Prince Edward Island, Canada; Debra Haldeman, Jonestown; and Kim Bricker and Diane, wife of William Via, both of Lebanon. Other survivors include a brother, John Anspach, Laureldale; and four sisters: Kathryn Fidler, Wyomissing; Sarah, wife of Edward Messner, West Lawn; and Margaret, wife of Earl Strauss and Pearl Marks, both of Sinking Spring. There are also eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and 10 step grandchildren. Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Zion United Methodist Church, Myerstown. Burial will be in Zion United Methodist Cemetery, Myerstown. The Grose Funeral Home, Myerstown, is in charge of arrangements.

Roy F. Anspach, 84, died Aug. 28 at 8:15 a.m. in his Mohrsville residence. He was the husband of Mary E. (Werley) Anspach. Born in Upper Bern Township, he was a son of the late Charles H. and Sallie R. (Lengel) Anspach. Anspach had been employed for 25 years as a steel worker by Hofmann Industries Inc., Sinking Spring, retiring in 1983. He was a member of Salem (Belleman's) Church, Centre Township. Anspach was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. There are no additional immediate survivors. Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in Leibensperger Funeral Homes Inc., Centerport. Burial will be in Fairview (Belleman's) Cemetery, Centre Township.

Sinking Spring, April 5 - Roy R. Anspach, 24, lost his life on December 18, when a U.S. warship was sunk during a severe tropical typhoon in the Pacific, according to word received by his parents, Robert S. & Annie E. (Klopp) Anspach, 648 Penn Ave., this borough. Anspach was a fireman second class. Surviving are his widow, the former Amy Shollenberger, and daughter, Patricia Ann, both residing at Rehrersburg; his parents, this borough; his grandmother, Mrs. Sarah Klopp, Robesonia; these sisters and brothers: Catharine, wife of Brooke Fidler, Womelsdorf; Mary, wife of Paul Haag, Hamburg; Liut. harry A. Anspach, in Germany; Sarah, wife of Sergt. Edward Messner, Sinking Spring; Staff Sergt. John J. Anspach, U.S. Army; Margaret and pearl Anspach, this borough; Richard, of Wernersville, and Robert, of this borough. he was a member of Hain's Reformed Church, the Mt. Pleasant Fire Company, and was a graduate of Penn Township High School. A memorial service will be held in Hain's Reformed Church on Sunday afternnon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Ralph E. Anthony, Edward L.

Oldest Resident of Boyertown Dies at 93
Edward L. Anthony, aged 93 years, the oldest resident of Boyertown, died Friday evening at the home of his daughters, Malara and Mantana, East Philadelphia Avenue. Deceased was in failing health for the past year and died of complications due to advanced age. Mr. Anthony was a veteran of the Civil War. He was the owner and operator of Anthony's Mill, near Barto, for more than half a century. The funeral was held Wednesday. Rev. G.G. Greenawald preached the sermon. Interment was made in Fairview Cemetery.

Mrs. Rose I. Anthony, 78, Reading Mobile Homes, Tuckerton, died today at 7 a.m. in the Reading Hospital, where she had been a patient since March 26. Born in Reading, the daughter of the late William and Rose (Yerger) Yerger, she was a member of the Alsace Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward F. Anthony, on June 23, 1961. She is survived by two nephews, Warren E. Yerger of Reading, R.D. 2, and George D. Swails of Redwood City, Calif. Services will be held at the Bean Funeral Home, Monday at 10:30 a.m., the Rev. Charles E. Fair officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park.

Services for Arlean R. Antinozzi, 72, of Phoebe Berks Village, Wernersville, formerly of Minersville, who died Tuesday at Reading Hospital, will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday from Edward J. Appel, Jonathan S.

Jonathan S. Appel, a native of Greenwich township, Berks county, but for a number of years a resident of this city, where he lived retired at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Appel, 1428 � Liberty street, died Wednesday night at 11.40 o'clock from the effects of strokes of apoplexy, aged 76 years. Mr. Appel was a son of the late Daniel and Hattie, nee Lennert, Appel. For a number of years he operated farms in and around his native place, then came to this city to live. Six years ago he and his wife took up their residence at the home of their son. He is survived by his widow, Mary, nee Heffner, and the following children, Harry, William, John and Mrs. Mamie Wenner, this city, and Mrs. Jacob Shankweiler, Kutztown. Twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. Mr. Appel held a membership in St. Paul's Reformed church, Mertztown, and in the Knights of Pythias lodge of Lyons.

Mrs. Mary, widow of Jonathan Appel, died at 2 o�clock yesterday morning at her home, the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Mayme Wenner, 1510 Liberty street, from a complication of ailments incident to old age from which she suffered for the past several years and which held her bedfast for three weeks. She was 77 years of age. She was born at Roscoe Manor, Berks county, a daughter of the late John and Mary, nee Miller. She has been a resident of this city for the past twenty-six years. She was a member of St. Paul�s Reformed church, Mertztown. The survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Jacob Shankweiler, Kutztown, and Mrs. Mayme Wenner, this city; three sons, William, John and Harry Appel, all of this city; twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Short funeral services at her late home Wednesday afternoon at one o�clock will be followed by further services in St. Paul�s Reformed church, Mertztown, and burial in the cemetery adjoining the church. Rev. Brensinger, pastor of St. Paul�s will officiate.

Arbogast, of Woodland Drive, Rockland Township, who was killed April 29 in a car accident in Ontelaunee Township. She died of head injuries in the crash, and a certificate of accidental was issued. Burial was private. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur A. Arbogast, who died Sept. 14, 1987. Born in Sunbury, Northumberland County, she was a daughter of the late Charles F. and Mary C. (Welsh) Clark. Until retiring in 1980, she was employed as an executive secretary by Polymer Corp., Northmont, for 20 years. She was a 1936 graduate of Sunbury High School. Armour, 91, formerly of Centre Township, who died March 22 in ManorCare Health Services, Muhlenberg Township, where she had resided two years. Burial was in Fairview (Belleman's) Cemetery, Centre Township. She was predeceased by her husband, David R. Armour, who died May 21, 1994. Born in Richlandtown, Bucks County, she was a daughter of the late Arthur C. and Viola L. (Search) Bader. Until retiring, she was employed as a sewing machine operator by the Robert F. Miller Underwear Co., Shoemakersville, for many years. Surviving is a forster son, Robert J. Wink Jr., Maxatawny Township, and a sister, Lorraine V. (Bader) Fellman, Quakertown, Bucks County.

Pottstown, Jan 29 – Emerson B Armpriester, 73, Succumbed to a heart attach while shoveling snow yesterday at his home, 804 Queen St. He and his wife celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Christmas.

He was a retired Reading Company employee, working for the company 48 years, and for many years was a conductor on the Colebrookdale Branch, operating between this borough and Barto. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Transfiguration. Brotherhood of Railroad Trainman, P. & P. Relief Association, Good Will Fire Company, P.O.S. of A., and Knights of Malta.

Surviving are his widow A Minerva (Strunk); a daughter, Mary, wife of Abraham Anderson, this borough; three grandchildren and seven grandchildren; two sisters and a step-sister, Mrs. Lindley Mauger, of town. Funeral Monday at 2P.M. from Houck funeral Home. Buriel in Mt Zion Cemetery.

Mrs. Ida M. Arndt, 61, wife of Raymond B. Arndt of Fleetwood R. 2, died yesterday in Community General Hospital, Reading. She was a native of Longswamp Township, Berks County, a daughter of the late William A. and Ellen M. (Wiltrout) Christman. She was a member of Friedens United Church of Christ, Lenhartsville. Surviving with her husband are three sons, Kenneth W., of Reading R. 2; Raymond J., at home, and John D., of Alburtis; a daughter, Florence E., wife of Clarence Bailey of Shartlesville Star Route; four sisters, Mrs. Maggie Rahn of Blandon; Grace, wife of Edward Kistler of Kutztown, and Mrs. Edna Bieber and Mamie, wife of Allen Kistler, both of Fleetwood; five brothers, Paul of Hamburg; Ralph of Breinigsville; Luther of Fleetwood and Lester and William of Kutztown R. 2, and nine grandchildren. Nevin R. P. Arndt, 91, formerly of Kutztown, died May 29 in Berks Heim, where he had been a resident. His wife, Dorothy (Hemmerly) Arndt, died in 1971. Born in Kutztown, he was a son of the late Irvin and Hattie (Christman) Arndt. Arndt had been employed for 16 years in maintenance by Kutztown State College, retiring in 1978. He is survived by a daughter, Arlene M. (Arndt) Haag, Bowers, and a son, Robert P., Topton. There are also five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Walter B. Arndt, 84, a retired foreman of the Donaldson Iron Co., of Emmaus, died yesterday in his Vera Cruz residence. Born in Longswamp, he was the son of the late Osbon and Marriah (Werely) Arndt. Until his retirement in 1946, he was employed 45 years by the Donaldson Iron Co. He was formerly a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard. He was the husband of Annie (Rohrbach) Arndt. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in May, 1964. Besides his widow he is survived by three daughters, Octavia, wife of Homer Polster, Meda, wife of Valentine Geist and Violet, wife of Kermit Cope, all of Emmaus; eight sons, Luther, Clarence, Earl and Walter Jr., all of Vera Cruz, Charles, at home, Ralph of Walnutport R. 1, Albert of Emmaus and Douglas of Center Valley; three sisters, Mrs. Carrie George, Mrs. Meda Miller and Mrs. Annie Kratzer, all of Emmaus; one brother, Edwin of Emmaus R. 1; 33 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. William D. Arndt Sr., 76, of ManorCare Health Services, Lebanon, formerly of Friedensburg, died Friday at Veterans Affairs Hospital, Lebanon. Born in Greenwich Township, Berks County, he was a son of the late Arthur and Martha Barnhart Arndt. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a farmer and was last employed as a welder by Hahn Motors, Hamburg. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Friedensburg, Oriel Nest 22 and Keystone Fire Company, both of Boyertown, Union Fire Company, Hamburg, and Virginville Fire Company. Surviving are his wife, the former Pauline Kratzer; three sons, William Jr., Friedensburg, Ronnie, Hamburg, and Guy, Lebanon; three daughters, Laverne Lafferty, Clearwater, Fla., Robin Ferguson, Friedensburg, and Lori Krug, Reading; a brother, Myron, North Carolina; three sisters, Harriet Miller, Lenhartsville, Beatrice Achenbach, Shoemakersville, and Ivy Hertzog, Kutztown; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from Geschwindt-Stabingas Funeral Home Inc., 25 E. Main St., Schuylkill Haven. Chaplain Donald Lindman will officiate. Interment will be in Cressona Cemetery.

Arndt, William W.

William W. Arndt died at the Reading hospital on Sunday morning from injuries sustained in having his left leg crushed by a freight train on the Lebanon Valley road, near Hummelstown on Saturday afternoon. He was brought to this city and his limb amputated. He was very weak and died from the loss of blood. Mr. Arndt was 25 years of age and was a boilermaker by trade. He was formerly employed at the steel works at Steelton. When he quit work he was refused his pay because he had failed to give notice and was on his way to Steelton to draw his wages--the necessary time having expired--when he was hurt at Hummelstown. Deceased leaves a widow and one child, at Statedale, Lehigh county. He was a son of Charles Arndt, 349 Cedar. He was a member of the Boilermakers' union and was very well known. He was employed in Maryland and Pottstown at different times. Coroner Hoffman was notified and will hold an inquest at the outer P. & R. depot on Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Mrs. Emily I. (Eckroth) Arnick, 54, widow of Stephen Arnick, 104 N. 3rd St., died in the Reading Hospital. She was a daughter of the late George and Margaret (Schrock) Eckroth and had been employed as a candy coater by a local candy manufacturing firm. Arthur, Amos A. and Arthur, Laura

Double Funeral held for Pastor and Wife. Funeral services for the Rev. Dr. Amos A. Arthur, a retired Methodist minister, who died Tuesday, and his wife, Mrs. Laura Styer Arthur, who died last Saturday were held last night in the East Allegheny Avenue Methodist Church, Philadelphia. The couple were buried in Reading today. Doctor Arthur succumbed in the Methodist hospital. He had not been told that his wife had succumbed three days previously at their home, 427 Glen Echo Road, Mt. Airy. A member of the Philadelphia Methodist Conference, Doctor Arthur retired in 1932. He was born in Reading, was graduated from Dickinson College in 1884 and ordained the same year. The Arthurs are survived by two daughters, Mrs. Earl B. Collmer, of Mt. Airy, and Mrs. Fred K. Freehafer of Pittsburgh.

Charles Daniels Arthur, 87, passed away March 29, 2004, at Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth, after a long battle with diabetes and heart ailments. Born in Reading, Pa., April 11, 1916, he was preceded in death by his parents, John E. III and Sara Daniels Arthur; his brother, Col. (retired) John E. IV and first wife, Esther; and his sister, Ruth Arthur Anderton and husband John. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Audrey Arthur; and a host of nieces, nephews, nephews, cousins and friends from Virginia, Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, California and Canada.

As a young man, Charles Arthur was always the adventurer and leader. In high school, he enrolled in the Civilian Military Training Camp program, through which he earned an Army scholarship to Washington-Jefferson College in Pennsylvania. This enabled him to secure an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy (Class of 1940). He resigned for medical reasons after his Plebe year, later resuming academics at the University of Pittsburgh where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in economics. Subsequent education included Harvard University Graduate School, Wilmington Law School, the University of Innsbruck, Austria, the University of London (School of Economics, School of Oriental and African Studies), and the University of Rhode Island. He earned a masters degree in Asian History from Cambridge University, and Ph.D. from the University of London. He also taught at the American School in Switzerland and the Newport School in Rhode Island, prior to becoming a full professor of Asian and African History with Pennsylvania State University, until his retirement in 1991.

Most of his life embodied his love of the sea. As early as 1937, he began working on merchant ships navigating the globe, and from 1941-47, Charles was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserves. He retired from active Merchant Marine service in 1988 at age 72, culminating a career spanning 50 years as a professional Mariner. This fusion of diverse disciplines served him well while living abroad in Europe, North Africa, India and the Far East. While in Hong Kong and Bangkok, Thailand, Charles owned and manager a commercial export/trading company. As a member of the international community, he found time to be involved in cultural activities, academic studies, sports and general social life. The arts were a vital part of Charles psyche. An accomplished classical pianist, musician and vocalist, he also excelled in writing, and painting in oil and water colors. He was also an avid sportsman and his love of the outdoors prompted interest in diverse activities, such as equestrian sports (field hunting, dressage and polo), tennis, climbing, skiing, fishing, hunting, sailing and flying/gliding.

As a member of the Masonic Fraternity, Charles participated while living abroad. In 1997, the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania presented him with the Fifty-Year Gold Award, a most prestigious honor for continuous, active participation. His life experiences were unending; he always thrived on challenges. Until his death, Charles D. Arthur continued to have a vivacious outlook on life. His love of adventure, of music and art, and his ultimate kindness and desire to assist others, will be missed by those who knew and loved him. He will be remembered by all, as a truly modern Renaissance man.

Memorial services are currently being planned, with final interment at the St. Andrews Anglican Church in Tangiers, Morocco. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

Arthur, 21 [sic], died at Bethune Home Last Friday Funeral services were conducted Friday at the residence in Bethune for Frank Moyer Arthur, 91, who died at his home last Thursday after an extended illness. Born, March 22, 1858, at Reading, PA, an architect and builder, he had made his home in Bethune for the past 28 years. He was a member of the Bethune Masonic lodge. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. T.W. Beeson, Willow Grove, PA; Mrs. T.E. Clemens, Philadelphia, PA, and Miss Mary Arthur, of Bethune, and one son, Capt. F.D. Arthur, U.S. Navy, Houston, Texas. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Neil Truesdell, of Newberry. A brief Masonic service was held afterwards. The body was taken to Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading, PA for interment. Mr. Arthur was one of the oldest citizens in Kershaw county.

Demise of John Arthur. Son of Former City Treasurer--Blind for Some Time. John Arthur, aged 63 years, retired street foreman of the Consumers Gas Company, died of a complication of ailments at 8 a.m. today at his home in Cumru Township near the File Mile House, after an illness of five years. He was blind for some time and has been a patient in several hospitals. Mr. Arthur was born in 1861 at the Arthur homestead, 127 South Fourth Street. He was a son of the late Col. John E. Arthur, city treasurer for seven terms, and a veteran of the Mexican and Civil wars. Deceased, when a machinist apprentice in the Reading Company's shops, left reading in 1881, after graduating from the local high school. He was employed by various railroads west of the Mississippi River between 1881 and 1895, when he returned to Reading and worked for the gas company until 1903 when he retired. Surviving besides his widow, Gertrude, are two sons, Elliott, Charleston, WV and Raymond, Reading; several grandchildren, two brothers, Frank M. superintendent of the UGI Company of Philadelphia, and Amos A., a Methodist clergyman, stationed at Wissahickon near Philadelphia; one sister, Mrs. Samuel A. Mester, Columbus, O., and a nephew, John A. Keppelman, president of the Consumers Gas Company this city.

With a brother, Rev. Amos A. Arthur of Philadelphia, officiating, the funeral of John Arthur, former street foreman of the Consumers Gas Company, took place from the parlors of Undertaker Miller. The bearers, all employees of the gas company, were William Williams, Frederick Crouse, Edward Metzgar, A. Bollinger, A. Sterner and Henry Obst. The body was dressed in a black suit and rested in an oak casket with antique silver trimmings. In compliance with the request of the family there were no tributes. Interment was made in Charles Evans Cemetery.

Arthur, John Elliott (Col.)

Death of Col. John E. Arthur. His highly honorable record in 2 wars--was city treasurer 14 years--how he made good a loss of $10,000, and was later reimbursed by the city--twice refused to receive a pension.

Col. John Elliott Arthur, one of the most highly esteemed residents of Reading, died at his home, 127 South 4th, at 9 o'clock Sunday evening. Though ailing for ten days, his condition was at no time considered serious, and Sunday evening during a visit by his son, John E. Arthur, Jr., and daughter and son-in-law, Mr. And Mrs. John H. Keppelman, appeared in excellent spirits.

Shortly before 9 o'clock his son and Mr. And Mrs. Keppelman left. They had barely reached their houses when they were summoned to the father's bedside, but when they arrived Mr. Arthur had breathed his last, death having been due to heart disease.

Two incidents in his life characterized him as a remarkable man. The most notable of these occurred while he was city treasurer. He had about $10,000 of the city's cash deposited in one of the local banks and when it failed in '77, the money was lost. Colonel Arthur told no one, but made good the amount by drawing upon his own private resources. In order to do this it was necessary for him to sell most of his property and building association shares.

The matter was adjusted and no one knew of the self-sacrificing deed performed by Colonel Arthur until three or four years later. How it was divulged came about as follows: The late judge Bruckman was chairman of the Finance Committee of Councils, and was one of those appointed to adjust the financial difficulties of the bank which had failed and in which Treasurer Arthur had deposited the city's money. An ordinance was introduced in Councils to increase the salary of the city officials and the matter was referred to the Finance Committee.

As chairman of the committee, Judge Bruckman was opposed to increasing the salary of any official with the exception of Treasurer Arthur. Then for the first time, it was related by him how the City Treasurer had made good the large sum of money lost by the city through the bank failure. Not only was the salary of the official increased, but to answer to a public sentiment, the necessary legislation was immediately introduced in Councils and he was reimbursed for his loss with interest. There was a general demand from the taxpayers that this should be done.

The second incident, and one which is known to have occurred only a few times in the history of this government, was his refusal to accept a pension which was twice offered him for his gallant services in the cause of his country. He received a letter from the Department at Washington, stating that they only had a few other instances of this character on record.

Colonel Arthur was born in Muncy Creek township, Lycoming County, April 25, 1826. He was of Scotch-Irish ancestry. His father came from County Tyrone, Ireland, and was a school teacher in Chester County and later in Lycoming for 20 years. The son, John E., attended the public schools and while a lad was apprenticed to the blacksmith trade. At the age of 19 years he came to Reading and entered the employ of the Reading Railway Company as a blacksmith.

At the breaking out of the Mexican war he enlisted in Captain Thomas Leoser's company, which was raised in this city, and assigned to the 2nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment.

Col. Arthur was a corporal in his company, which is today known as the Reading Artillerists. His reminiscences of that war were highly interesting and it was one of his greatest enjoyments to meet his old comrades in arms in after years. These reunions have not recently been held, as there are only a few remaining survivors of the Mexican war in Reading.

The company made the trip to Chambersburg by rail, marched from thence to Pittsburgh and then proceeded down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers by steamboats. Colonel Arthur participated in the siege of Vera Cruz and with General Scott's triumphant army marched into the City of Mexico. While the assault on Chapultepec was being made he was wounded. After one and a half year's service he returned to Reading, being discharged on account of his wounds. He was spoken of as an exceedingly brave soldier, and time and time received the commendation of his superior officers.

The war over, he returned to civil life. He again took up the blacksmith trade and in 1854, was made assistant foreman of this department at the Reading railway shops. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, he recruited Co. B, 93d Pennsylvania Volunteers of which he was commissioned captain. With his command he participated in the siege of Yorktown, the battles of the Wilderness and Fair Oaks and the terrible seven days' fighting before Richmond. For distinguished service at the battle of Fair Oaks he was promoted to lieutenant colonel of his regiment. Later he was engaged in the battle of Chantilly and was present at Antietam. After two years' service, owing to physical debility contracted in Mexico, he was obliged to return home.

In 1863 he assumed the foremanship of the blacksmithing department of the P&R shops, where he remained until the emergency call for troops during the Confederate invasion of Pennsylvania when he recruited a company, which was assigned to the 42d Pennsylvania Volunteers., and of which command he was made lieutenant colonel. After three months' service he again entered the Reading Railway shops, where he remained until 1870, when he was chosen City treasurer on the Democratic ticket. At the ensuing election he received the unanimous nomination of both political parties and owing to fidelity of purpose and integrity of management of the finances of the city, was re-elected six successive times. He served in all 14 consecutive years, when in 1885 he refused a re-nomination at the hands of his party and retired, much to the regret of the citizens in general. Amidst all the changing political conditions at City hall, he was re-elected, when the opposition party was victorious with all its other candidates. He had the esteem and confidence of all classes of citizens as few officials ever possessed. His name was a synonym for integrity and honesty and it may be truly said of him that his word was as good as his bond. Fidelity was his strongest characteristic. In all his relations, whether to his family, in business affairs, to his employers, or as a public official he was animated by a conscientious desire to do right, a quality for which he was admired by all who knew him.

Although to all appearances of reserved manner, he was one of the most companionable of men. As city treasurer he established a high standard of efficiency, which he ever maintained. With his entrance into the Reading Railway shops he was at once recognized as a competent and faithful employee. When he arose by his won exertions to positions of responsibility in the same plant he retained the good will and confidence of the men under him. He had a highly honorable career as a soldier in two wars, and in civil life his record was unblemished. He was admired for all those traits of character, which stamped him as a valued member of the community. For a number of years he was secretary of all the West Reading building associations. He resigned about two years ago.

Colonel Arthur was for some years secretary of the Fire underwriters Association of this city, but retired from active work owing to advanced age.

On May 3, 1851, he was married to Miss Rebecca P. Moyer, of this city, by the late Rev. Dr. Aaron S. Leinbach. Seven children were born in the union, two of whom--James Ancona and Fannie Louisa Arthur--died in youth, while his widow and five children--Mary E., wife of John H. Keppelman, this city; Frank m. Arthur, Philadelphia; Rev. Amos A. Arthur, Bristol; John E. Arthur, Jr., and Emily R., wife of Samuel A. Mester of York--survive, together with 2 brothers, Henry Arthur of Three Rivers Mich., and James Arthur of Muncy.

He was a member of the Odd Fellows and Masonic fraternity and St. Matthew's Lutheran church.

In 1887 he was the Democratic candidate for mayor against James P. Kenney, and was defeated for the office by but 104 votes.

Funeral of Col. Arthur. A large attendance of relatives, friends and organizations to which he belonged.

The funeral of Col. John E. Arthur took place from his residence 127 South 4th at 1:20 p.m. and was largely attended. The remains were attired in a black suit and reposed in a solid walnut casket with silver trimmings and plate inscribed with the date of death and deceased's name and age. The bearers were selected from among the members of Salome lodge, no. 105, IOOF, Reading Encampment no. 43; Chandler Lodge, No. 227; F. & A.M.; Neversink Lodge No. 323, K. of P., delegations of which were present together with city officials and a number of the surviving members of the Mexican war. Services were conducted at the house by Rev. Dr. Hufford. In his address he paid a high tribute to the deceased and referred to his many sterling qualities.

Relatives were present from York, Bristol and Philadelphia. By request of the family, there were no flowers save a cluster of roses from the children and grandchildren. Interment in Charles Evans Cemetery Funeral director; E.S. Miller.

Arthur, John Elliott Jr. (Col.)

Newport News - Retired U.S. Army Col. John Elliott Arthur Jr., 87, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, after a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 26 years and the mother of his children, Esther Austin Arthur; his parents, John E. III and Sara Daniels Arthur and his sister, Ruth Arthur Anderton.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey; three daughters, Sharon Arthur Spencer and her spouse, retired U.S. Marine Corps Major C.W. Spencer, Catherine Arthur-MacDonald and her spouse, J. Alexander MacDonald, and Kim Arthur Pruden and her spouse, John (Jay) Pruden; two sons, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. John E. Arthur V. and his spouse, Jessie E. Arthur and Charles W. Arthur and his spouse, Diane K. Arthur; his brother, Charles Daniels Arthur and brother-in-law, James R. Austin. His will be remembered by his grandchildren, Sara Spencer Sharratt, James and Colin MacDonald, Allison and John Arthur VI, Nichole, Emily and Austin Arthur and Ellen and Elizabeth Pruden, as a "GREAT MAN".

Colonel Arthur was born in Reading, Pa., on Oct. 23, 1914. He had been a Hampton Roads resident since 1966. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, and subsequently earned Masters of Art degrees from George Washington University in Government Administration and International Affairs. Col. Arthur was commissioned in 1937 as a second lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps, though the University of Pittsburgh ROTC program. He embarked upon a career in his nation's service that was to span three continents and thirty years, until his retirement in 1967. After a Battery Officers Course at Fort Monroe, he was assigned as the Battery Commander and Artillery Operations Officer, 99th Coast Artillery, US Forces Panama/Trinidad/Surinam. In 1943, he departed the West Indies for a brief assignment as a Gunnery Instructor and then Student Officer at the AAA School at Camp Davis, North Carolina.

In 1945, Col. Arthur was assigned as the Assistant G2 (Intelligence), HQ, Tenth U.S. Army in Okinawa, Japan. He was a veteran of numerous World War II campaigns, and later served in General Douglas MacArthur's Headquarters as an Intelligence Staff Officer in Tokyo, Japan. On his return to the U.S., he went to the University of Delaware as an Assistant Professor of Military Science, prior to attending the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. In 1953, Col. Arthur was transferred to Stuttgart, Germany to assume command of the 889th AAA Battalion, 28th Infantry Division, followed by the command of the 42nd AAA (SP) Battalion, 9th Infantry Division. He then became the ACofS, G1 for 9th Infantry Division.

In 1957, Col. Arthur was assigned to the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, with a subsequent assignment to Headquarters, Department of the Army, Washington, D.C. He also served with the Weapons Systems Evaluation Group, Department of Defense Research and Evaluation in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. In 1962, Col. Arthur proceeded to Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, as a student at the U.S. Army War College. Upon completion, he was assigned as the Army Advisor to the Naval War College, Newport, R.I. Col. Arthur's final military command was as the area Defense Commander, Hampton Roads Army Air Defense (Nike Hercules) Command, 35th Artillery Brigade (AD), Norfolk.

In his 30 years of service to the nation, Colonel Arthur had served five overseas assignments and his decorations included the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Army Occupation Medal, and the Commendation Ribbon with Medal Pendant.

Upon his retirement from active duty, Colonel Arthur spent 10 years with the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company as a military contract administrator. An avid historian, he served on the Board of Directors and was past president of the Casemate Museum Foundation; liaison and past treasurer of the Fort Monroe Historical and Archaeological Society; and he was a former docent of the Casemate Museum.

A memorial service will be held at the Chapel of the Centurion, Fort Monroe on Monday, March 4 at 2 p.m. Internment with military honors will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Casemate Museum at Ft. Monroe or the Riverside Regional Medical Center Hospice Program in recognition of our caregivers. The family will receive visitors at home on Sunday, March 3, between 7 and 9 p.m.

Helen E. Artz, 73, of Mechanicsburg, died Saturday at home. She was a part owner of the former Artz Restaurant, Spring Glen, and Midland Theatre, Valley View. She was a member of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, West Reading. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard R. Surviving are her husband, Robert E.; a son, Kim W., West Reading; her mother, Anna Williams, Valley View; three grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from Neill Funeral Home, Camp Hill. Interment will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Exeter Township, Berks County.

Royersford--Death of Mrs. John Ash. Mrs. John Ash, of Linfield, who was visiting at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stafford, on Greet st., Royersford, died Wednesday night at 9 o'clock of consumption.

Ash, Rita M.

Among the local survivors of Rita M. (Herbster) Ash, Allentown, who died of natural causes Nov. 14 in the Visiting Nurses Association Hospice of St. Luke's Hospital, is a son, Clayton Ash, Blandon.

Ashenfelter, Charles E. Jr.

Charles E. Ashenfelter, Jr. (May 7, 1937 - December 28, 2005). Charles E. "Chuck" Ashenfelter, Jr., 68, of Alsace Township, died December 28th shortly after his motorcycle crashed on Fritztown Road in Spring Township. Formerly of Reading, he was the husband of Dolores A. (Barbitta) Ashenfelter. Born in Mount Joy, Lancaster County, he was a son of the late Charles E. Sr., and Clare (Aston) Ashenfelter. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, West Reading where he was a lay pastor, choir member and served on church council. Ashenfelter was a 1955 graduate of Donegal High School, Lancaster County and a graduate of Millersville University where he received his bachelor and master degrees. He was an Air Force Veteran. Ashenfelter was the captain of the Victor Emmanuel Bowling Team; volunteered for the six years at the PA State Police, Camp Cadet program, Yellow House and was a active actor in the Ephrata Play House. He was employed seven years as a teacher in the Paradise School District, Lancaster County. Ashenfelter was later employed 19 years in Harrisburg by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Drug and Alcohol License Department, last working 1999. He later worked part-time at the Berks County Court House as a tip staffer for the last four years; Cookies By Design of Sinking Spring as a baker and driver and the Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc., Laureldale as a funeral assistant. Ashenfelter is also survived by a step-daughter, Kim D. (Bleiler) Petersen of West Lawn and a sister, Nancy C. (Ashenfelter) Sullivan of Camp Hill, Cumberland County. Other survivors include two step-grandchildren, John E. Petersen of Shillington and Amber R. Petersen of West Lawn. There is also a step-great-granddaughter, Liliana Petersen of Shillington. Services will be Monday at 10:30 AM in Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc., Laureldale. Rev. Samuel R. Zeiser officiating. Viewing Monday 9:00 - 10:30 AM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church, 336 Franklin Street, West Reading, PA 19611.

Auchenbach, Louise C. (nee Boyer)

Louise C. Auchenbach, 82, formerly of Robesonia and Paradise, Lancaster County, died June 28 at 8:53 a.m. in Landis Homes, Manheim Township, Lancaster County, where she had resided since April 15, 1996. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Warren W. and Louise (Keesey) Boyer. Auchenbach was employed for many years in charge of the laundry department and later the storeroom at Bethany Children's Home, Womelsdorf, retiring in 1986. She was a soloist at Holy Cross United Methodist Church, Reading, and was a soloist for many years at churches in Berks and Lancaster counties. Surviving are two sons, Scott A., Paradise, and Lee W., Robesonia; and a daughter, Diane L. (Auchenbach) Goodhart, Robesonia. Other survivors include seven grandchildren. Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. in the Lutz Funeral Home Inc., Mount Penn. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reiffton.

Aulenbach, Irene A.

Irene A. Aulenbach, 92, former co-owner of a local greenhouse business, died July 18 at 10:20 a.m. in the Masonic Homes of Elizabethtown, Lancaster County, where she had been a patient for five weeks. Aulenbach, of Mohnton, formerly of Lower Alsace Township, had been predeceased by her husband, Arthur I. Aulenbach, on July 14, 1984. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Lilac (Wilson) Sherman. Aulenbach, along with her husband, co-owned and operated Aulenbach's Green Houses, Lower Alsace Township, for 25 years, retiring in 1980. She was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church, Reiffton. Aulenbach is survived by two sons, Grant M., with whom she last resided, and Neil I., Brecknock Township. Other survivors include a sister, Evelyn (Aulenbach) Kilar, DesPlaines, Ill. There are also six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. in Bean Funeral Homes Inc., Exeter Township. Burial will be in Spies (Zion) Cemetery, Alsace Township.

Auman--In this city, Charles A. Auman, Saturday, January 5, aged 33 years, 1 month, 21 days. Funeral on Wednesday, 9th inst., at 1 p.m., from the residence of his father, Elijah Auman, 121 Jefferson street. Services at Universalist Church. Interment at Charles Evans cemetery. The relatives and friends, and members of Camps 39 and 330, P.O.S. of A.; Resolute Council, 27, Jr. O. of A.M., Friendship Circle, No. 17, B.U. (H.F.) C. of A., and employees of Reading stove works are respectfully invited to attend.

Auman, Henry G.

Services were held for Henry G. Auman, 93, of Kramer Mill Road, Brecknock Township, Lancaster County, who died February 7 in Denver Nursing Home, where he had been a patient since 2002. His wife, Rose E. (Frederick) Auman, died in 1988. Born in Oley Township, he was employed for many years by Victor F. Weaver's Chicken, New Holland, before his retirement. He was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, Swartzville, Lancaster County. Auman is survived by a sister, Eva (Auman) Reider, Oley. There are also six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Richard A. Weaver Sr. Burial was in Muddy Creek Cemetery, Swartzville. Roseboro Funeral Home, Denver, handled the arrangements.

Among the local survivors of Richard M. Auman, 61, St. Lawrence, who was dead on arrival of natural causes Dec. 31 in St. Joseph Medical Center, is a half sister, Karen (Schollenberger) Wanner, Hamburg.

Burial was private for Richard M. Auman, 61, of Poplar Drive, St. Lawrence, who died December 31 in St. Joseph Medical Center. He was the husband of Mary J. (Frederick) Auman. Born in Auburn, Schuylkill County, he was employed for 27 years as a supervisor by Parish Structural Products Division of Dana Corp., Reading, until its closing. He was later employed as a maintenance supervisor by the Cabot Corp., Boyertown, last working in September. He was an Army and Air Force veteran. Auman was a graduate of Blue Mountain High School, Orwigsburg, and received a certificate for journeyman apprentice from the Reading-Muhlenberg Vocational-Technical School. Also surviving are five sons, Thomas L., West Reading; Keith A., Womelsdorf; Michael W. and Craig R., both of Robesonia; and Josh M., at home. Other survivors include two stepdaughters, Jennifer M. Yourkavitch, Zambia, Africa, and Jill A. Yourkavitch, Temple; and three stepsons: Jess M., Joseph B. and Jake A. Yourkavitch, all at home. Also surviving are two half brothers; a half sister and five grandchildren. The Lutz Funeral Home Inc., Mount Penn, handled the arrangements.

Azar, Ghadban B.

Among the local survivors of Ghadban B. "John" Azar, Reading, who died of natural causes Jan. 30 in the Hershey Medical Center, are three brothers, Adnan Azar and Sam Azar, both of Kutztown, and Nasrdine Azar, Fleetwood.
